Joby's Gorillapod Magnetic now sticking cameras in unexpected places worldwide
Did you finally run out of precarious places to suspend your camera using an original Gorillapod? We find that hard to believe (did you try the chandelier?) but just the same are happy to inform you that a world of new possibilities is now open with the Gorillapod Magnetic, which is shipping worldwide for $24.95. Sadly it still only manages to support a meager 11.5 ounces, so SLR-toting shooters will not want to rely on this lodestone-augmented franken-pod, but those of you rocking compacts should be receiving theirs soon. We look forward to see what new and exciting places people stick theirs too -- just note that the one wood has already been done, and so anyone looking to replicate that feat is a low-down, dirty copycat.
Joby Extends Gorillapod Family with Addition of

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – April 27, 2010 – Joby, Inc., the world renowned designer of the Gorillapod™ flexible camera tripod, is pleased to announce that its newest member of the Gorillapod family, Gorillapod Magnetic, is now available for purchase globally. Another "why didn't I think of that" product, the Gorillapod Magnetic underscores Joby's commitment to creating well-designed, revolutionary products to enhance the creative and active lifestyle.
Inspired by the overwhelmingly positive reception of the Gorillatorch hands-free flashlight, which features powerful magnetic feet in addition to flexible, wrappable legs, Joby is thrilled to introduce the Gorillapod Magnetic flexible tripod. With the addition of powerful magnets in the feet, the Gorillapod Magnetic can now be anchored to any magnetic surface, in addition to being secured with its fully-articulating legs. Stick it to a pole, wrap it around a tree branch, or perch it on a jagged rock – the positioning possibilities are truly endless.
The Gorillapod Magnetic is the latest addition to Joby's popular Gorillapod family, which features a host of positioning and stabilization products to extend one's creative photographic capabilities. With the 2006 launch of its first product, the Gorillapod original flexible tripod, Joby revolutionized the camera accessories market. Now the Gorillapod is available in four sizes to support a full range of photographic equipment, from point-and-shoots and mini video cameras to rigs weighing up to 11.1lbs! Joby has also launched a complete line of Gorillapod accessories to enhance the line's versatility. Examples include the Ballhead for SLR-Zoom, which allows one to fluidly pan and tilt a camera while it is stabilized by a Gorillapod, and the Flash Clip, which allows one to use the Gorillapod SLR to support an off-camera flash. And Joby's popular Gorillamobile™ line of products extends the hands-free functionality to a range of other mobile devices, including iPhones and iPods.
The Gorillapod Magnetic supports compact digital cameras and mini video cameras weighing up to 11.5oz, weighs just 2.5 ounces, is 6-inches tall, and has an MSRP of $24.95. US retailers include REI and amazon.com.

Finally I can make that first person golfing movie from the golf club POV I've always been dreaming of!
@TheChaosEngine
Now all the stalkers and pedophiles can get the POV they've been dreaming of.
@TheChaosEngine
Yup, golf club POV would be great... right until he digs a WWI style trench in the Tee box.
Had the camera be embedded in the club face, we would have something to talk about.
@Slick Someone should seriously consider planting a camera in a golf club!!!
*begins to ponder*
I just don't get it. Now you have to carry around this huge alien looking tripod thing AND the camera. At least it's priced reasonably.
@SaggyBalls
A tripod is critical for night (long exposure) photography. This is a really compact tripod compared to most.
@SaggyBalls You do not have to. You do not even have to carry a separate camera.
You can simply carry your camera featured mobile phone, or you can carry a separate pocket size camera, or you can carry a DSLR-like camera, or you can carry a DSLR camera and with any of these choices, you can also choose to carry a Joby tripod or a full size tripod. Or you carry no camera and scribble on a pad what you see. It is your choice on whether you want a picture, good pictures or excellent pictures and as a photographer, you can choose what equipment will assist you.
I personally like crappy, noisy pictures.
I would never trust that with my 7D
@steakman and I would never trust it with my 1Ds mk3. Seems I win this online pissing contest :-). It says right in the article it's not for DSLR use.
@steakman Ah didn't catch that.
@Blighter *Pick's up his T1i and sit's in the corner in shame.*
@SewerShark it's okay, i have the XSi. and then two months later: T1i.
"now sticking cameras in unexpected places"
Ow...........
@GenericMessage
The article DID say that "one wood" had already been tried.
[Not being a golfer, and after trying to view the pictures on a small screen, it took me a minute to figure out what the heck that was referring to.]
I've often wanted to try one of these but could never quite get there. Anyone had success with one or a recommendation?
@sharkync
I've used one (older version) for awhile and I really like it. I don't use it all of the time, but when I am going on international business trips, I do not take my DSLR along, because that is not what I am there for. But I like being able to take a compact and this along and I have gotten some good shots out of it. I think that for the price, you aren't really losing out if you do not like it or do not use it much.
@sharkync I own the SLR zoom and have used it w/7D quite a few times and it works when you either don't want to carry a tripod or they are not allowed. I just throw it in my camera bag and go as its very lightweight. A good example was my trip to Seattle, tripods are not allowed atop the space needle and there are wires everywhere for obvious safety reasons. I wrapped the gorillapod around the wires and had no problem with 15 second exposures and bracketed shots. I wouldn't use it like a mini tabletop tripod because I don't find it terribly stable in those situations, but if you have something to wrap the legs around, it quite a sturdy platform.
Is this new? I have had one of the these for several months, and previous to that I have lusted after one on the Joby website.
I can't wait to put magnets next to my electronic devices! I already have the original Gorillapod which is great fantastic, but now they've given me the option of holding on to my precious dollars and use Gorilla Glue to stick magnets on my existing Gorilla pod. Brilliant!
The poor thing looks scared.
Saw one at Macworld last Feb. and was amazed how deceivingly strong the magnetic feet were. I can imagine some people thinking they might hold more than the recommended 11 oz.
I bought the iPhone version and it amazingly handy (comes with a case for the phone that connects to the 'pod, a screw-in part for a small camera and a couple stick on tabs for anything else), but is there a trick to quickly resetting or re straightening the legs? I'm pulling and twisting those things forever trying to get them even again, lol.
I could see the usefulness of this combined with my Flip Mino HD for shooting porn videos.
Not that I'd do that...
That camera had a totally "WTF!!!11!11!1" expression on its face.
I never quite understood these, most magnetic things you'd want to stick the camera on could easily be wrapped around by a normal Gorilla Pod, even the two examples shown. The only thing I can think of that you can't wrap the legs around are fridges (because everyone needs a tripod for the kitchen) and a car (because cars don't have large flat surfaces to rest the camera or a normal GP on).
f*cking magnes, how do they work?
@D V D
oh god, here we go again
