Objects in Chinavasion's Video Glasses may be cheaper than they appear
Certainly, if we're going to live in a future where console jockeys and other cyberpunk-types run amok in virtual reality dreamscapes, we're going to have to start seeing more cut-rate video eyewear. For most cowboys, dropping $800 on something by Vuzix is just not an option. Luckily, the gang at Chinavasion have recently sourced some generic, relatively inexpensive "Video Eyeglasses." Priced at $135 (with the cost dropping when you buy at bulk) these bad boys feature a simulated display size of forty inches and QVGA (320 x 240) resolution. But that ain't all! It even ships with its own generic media player, sporting 2GB storage and support for the usual file formats (including DivX, XviD, MPEG2, AVI, MP3, and FLAC) as well as ROMs for NES and Sega. Seems pretty straight forward, right? The only question we have left is: if viewed through Video Glasses, will The Girlfriend Experience have a plot? Because when we saw it on IFC, we're pretty sure it didn't. Get a closer look after the break.

how much for just the free travel adapter?
@warningabc
Isnt she Sasha Grey?
@Beatnik
Just watch...
Don't fascinate!
@Beatnik Yes, Sasha Grey -- star (amongst other things) of The Girlfriend Experience
Joseph, that is one of the best Engadget titles ever.
QVGA (320 x 240) at 40 inches?
My eyes are bleeding just thinking about it.
@Honis i think it seems like a great way to immerse yourself in zelda and final fantasy 3/6
@Honis
Rocking the ten pixels per (apparent) inch....
To have that pixel density for real, a 1080p TV would be 220 inches diagonal.
File this under KIRF. Resolution doesn't get any faker than that.
@VampireHunterZ
Since when can a resolution be faked? This is a real gadget where you get what you pay for.
Actually this kinda makes me think of more of a portable version of that Zoombox thing. The NES almost makes it tempting for plane travel...
@motolovr It is good for that. For travel I use my dingoo, so that covers emulation and video playback. Add a cheap pair of myvu's from woot and your covered, all for the same price as this but with better components and things that arent all in one
I may be able to find a practical use for it ... To the blender!
Sell it to Sony... Sony up the resolution and mate it with the psp... Guy who is gonna rob me on the bus... Please don't rob me
Now just give me one with cameras and I'm sold.
@Trebawa Then you can view reality in real-time on a 40"-like screen for the ultimate double digit degree field of view!
Is that Sasha Grey?
@DirtyVegas
Glad i'm not the only person who recognized her.
It's weird seeing her with glasses on.
@look a cow
"It's weird seeing her with glasses on"
... you mean weird seeing her with her clothes on?
If I can ignore the people next to me on a long flight and get lost in some SNES games, it's worth at least $135. Finally a sensible use for video glasses.
I would probably use these to view some of Sasha's other work.
@MGDdrinker
Hey, THATS A VERY GOOD IDEA
@MGDdrinker
Hell Yea.... These will work excellent for her P.O.V scenes :)
I Freaking Love Sasha Grey
that chick is so HOT!!!!
@Hovesko
Trailer from that movie, looks interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGSfqShXIYo
Hahah first thin I saw was Sasha, glad to see everyone else noticed too
@petepete
Agreed, dont wanna hear about special devices with MULTITOUCH on movie reviews
I seen quite a few interesting items from Chinavasion. But my question is, has anyone bought anything from them.
For some reason I want to say "Jason!".
@poorkid Jaaason! Jason!
320 x 240 resolution— man, that's pretty grainy fare.
Lasean, this may or may not be "one of the best Engadget titles ever."
But the greatest headline EVER goes to today's New York Post, referring to the Goldman Sachs scandal: "Sachs of $h!t".
Epic!
@Darkroom wear some contact lenses. lol
imagine that, watching porn and nobody would notice what you're watching. lmao.
@isotrex
I think the hand down your pants might give it away.
Is that controller pictured from a strange angle, or is the d-pad on the wrong side?
40 inches means nothing of course, unless we know if it's 3 or 300 feet away
omg... Sasha Gray.... good taste Chinavision. Good taste!
Video eyewear could be the answer to 3D without the darkened image that results from polarisation, active shutter and anaglyph. It would be as simple as giving the different images to each eye. I think it'll be best as a plug-in to a standard 2D/3D HDTV, to keep options and practicality open.
But how awesome would it be..
For the sake of practicality, the living room or bedroom TV screen will never go away, whatever form it is in, but the option to pop in and pop on a pair of video eyewear glasses would be great every now and then when you feel like it.
Video eye wear plus some 2 channel 3D audio via headphones will always be the best form of immersion we can get, at least until games literally plug into our senses.
My vision of the future would be a 42" 240Hz autostereoscopic 2160p OLED display with the option of 2D and 3D viewing via a simple toggle of a button, plus a bluetooth transmitter that transmits to optional video eyewear glasses that offer undisturbed 2D and 3D imaging and 3D stereo sound.
The concept sounds cool but I bet your eyes will be pretty darn tired after 30 minutes of it.
If you all remember Nintendo's literal eye sore, the Virtual Boy?
It was super fun to play, but after a bit of time, your eyes felt like they were bleeding.
If this device doesn't cause eye cancer, then hey, I'm wrong. Otherwise, I'll probably pass on this. I like being able to moderate physical object distance to prevent eye strain. Plus hey, I can wear my normal glasses if I need to as well then.
it's sounds too cheap! i like vuzix, the model i found on http://www.doxbox.it/shop/products/VUZIX-WRAP-280-Occhiali-Video-da-51-Pollici!.html it seems to be better.
