Cyanogen ports Android 2.1 to G1 and MyTouch 3G (update)
Droid, Milestone, Eris, Moment, Spica, even the Hero, all have had their Eclair, one way or another. G1 and myTouch 3G? Not so much. But don't worry, Android early adopters, because Cyanogen's got your back. Most all the bells, whistles and hardware-accelerated graphics of Android 2.1 are coming to the HTC Dream, Magic and Sapphire in CyanogenMod 5.0.7, and you can see a video of a T-Mobile G1 running the new build after the break. Twitter buzz indicates the ROM Update: Don't stay up all night waiting -- Cyanogen says he's got "two more bugs to kill" and is "hoping for a test1 public beta tomorrow night."

@jellotime91 Android doesn't have an iTunes equivalent that makes it easy as pie for Apple to push out software updates. They have to push it out through the carriers. I suppose the middle of the road would be to have it for download through the Market, but I don't know how feasible that is.
@cloud858rk The fact of the matter is Apple controls the hardware and the firmware. Google developed/released the Nexus One so I have no idea why that isn't the first phone to get any updates (I suppose it has to do with the firmware distribution method, which once again Apple controls and Google does not... bad move).
i CAN'T wait until Cyanogen releases this.
I'm using his latest ROM for my rooted G1 right now, i can say its awesome, but this will be epic. :)
you might want to ditch that video, just cause of the phone number listed from the received txt... waiting patiently to get this... hopefully half hour or so.
@jmhalder
Android users are good people, so I wouldn't worry about it. If someone does spam that number, chances are that it's a jealous iPhone user :P
This is why Android is going to go viral and eat everybody else's lunch. It's open and this kind of retrofit is possible...along with a lot of other cool things. Closed systems can't compete, because they won't allow this.
@teky
They also don't typically need to. Closed systems are easier to update so there is less chance of older devices getting left out. Want proof? The original iPhone got OS 3 even though it was 2 years old at the time. The G1 is barely a year old, and it is already getting left out.
Don't get me wrong; I love Android. Google just needs to make updating better. Fortunately, as you said devs can make updates happen without Google's help.
@Steve B
Just for the record, the G1 is a decent bit more than a year old. Try more like 19 months (just over a year and a half) old.
Also, for Android 2.2, they're fixing the problem of the fragmentation/lack of updates for older devices. They're (what i suggested since Android 1.0) putting the base OS apps such as dialer, gallery, messaging and so on in the Android Market so whenever they choose to release a new dialer (for example), they just throw it on the Market and job done. This also makes it nice because they can update the dialer without needing to update the entire OS and having 30MB new versions every 3 weeks.
@Steve B
which is why the 2g iphone along with its 3g (which they still sell i might add) counterpart will not receive multitasking this summer? You cant blame google for this, what they basically said when launching Android was 'here is our operating system do with what you will'. The g1 by no means was googles vision of their phone. For this reason Early android phone were not impressive. people are looking at the nexus one calling it a failure when in reality it was googles way of showing phone manufactures using the Android OS what a google phone should be like. I would take an open system over a closed system any day. With a closed system, Once Apple drops support for your model its game over buddy. At least with an open system you have people like Cynaogen who help squeeze extra life out of your aging devices. I do give apple props for maintaing hardware support for over 2 years, which is a good run in the technology world.
I love android but it will suffer the same fate windows mobile suffered.
Honest blog..
@FrankDTank Which is....?
Most everything looked smooth and fast, WOW! Cyan, I cannot believe what you have done with my dusty old last phone! now it wont be so jealous next to my N1 once I load this rom on the G1. dang
I had had this on my G1 for over 3 months now.

@engOscar you did huh? did video recording work months ago? did 3d work? did video accel. work? no no no... OE is a great rom, and Chris Sawyers and Wes Garner have helped Cyanogen, and vice versa... CM releases are complete and stable, which is why this is a big deal.
I admire the commentators self restraint, with no comments so far mentioning the bodacious G1 wallpaper.
@TareG BOOBIES!!!!!11!!!
@Phromik My roommate didn't know who's number that is.. feel free to spam away :p They shouldn't have texted me as I recorded the video!
1. Does the qwerty work?
2. Does sound work?
3. Does Wi-Fi?
Also, ZOOM OUT!
@Mr iPhone yes yes yes yes... its a SOLID CM release, which is why this is newsworthy.
100% Fail.
At T-Mobile, not Cyanogen.
These people do it, why can't they?
Idiots.
@Johnny Rockets
He uses apps to sd, which increases ROM space.
The carriers aren't going to do this.
How sad is it that google would not release it, and that it takes hackers/moders to do the work for them. Android is so fragmented now, but its still the best thing going
I've been using Android 2.1 on my G1 for quite some time now. But, nothing as seamless as this. Mine is pretty fast, but the landscape gallery is funky, and the camcorder doesnt work. I've been a big fan of KingKlick and Kolohe, ive cyanogen before, but wasn'y my glass of wine. but this build kicks some serious butt.
aha, I got android 2.1 on my diamond :P
Cyanogen rocks! Not to mention so does android and the G1. It is excellent to see the G1 brought current and still keeping it a viable device.
DAMMIT ROGERS WHY DID YOU DENY ME THIS AWESOMENESS
I heart Cyanogen and what he does for the HTC android community. And I heart him even more for what he does for my Droid
Funny, I've had Android 2.1 running on my phone for a couple of months now... Was running Laszlo's eclair ROM (with the Nexus launcher) till recently. Right now I'm actually using King's Legend port (2.1 with Sense atop it). Speedy and slick. Still, gotta hand it to Cyan since his builds are always rock solid and super fast.
I know my g1 is outdated compared to the new phones, but if Tmobile is going to make me sign a 2 year contract, they should support the phone with updates for 2 years. I eventually rooted and went with cyanogen and I love it, so much better then stock.
Umm... I already have SenseHERO running on my HTC Magic 32A... thats Android 2.1 with HTC Sense UI on it. What so new about this?
