Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid Lynx' arrives on the scene
It's been less than a year since Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" was released, but the next big version of the Linux OS has now already arrived to take its place: Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx." In addition to the usual tweaks and fixes, this one promises a boot speed that is "noticeably quicker" on almost any machine (and especially on those with SSDs), along with a range of new features including a social networking-oriented "Me Menu," Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0 for easier access to new software, and a slew of new cloud-based services courtesy of Ubuntu One -- not to mention the Ubuntu One music store. The release also marks the first time that GIMP doesn't come pre-installed (you get F-Spot instead), and it is naturally complemented by Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition, which promises even faster boot speeds and other optimizations. Ready to make the jump? Then you can grab the Release Candidate right now at the link below, or you can wait a bit for the final Long-Term Support (LTS) version, which is said to be "just around the corner."
Update: And just like that, the LTS version is out! Get it at the source link below.

AWSOME!! I AM GETTING IT NOW!!
@TheSunman89 me too!
@TheSunman89
I have to admit Ubuntu was the first distro I tried and the most impressive thing I discovered, was the option to use the live cd to enter my windows partition on the hard drive, to save all my files to USB (all this after a virus or BSOD).
Now after trying many distros, I prefer KDE desktop on Mandriva, Sabayon, OpenSuse, PCLinux and Mepis.
I havent tried the KDE community edition of Linux Mint but I think I will sometime.
Ubuntu has a great community, so keep the good work, and long life to Linux.
@TheSunman89 : That's what she said!

Talk about a fast OS!
@TheSunman89 I have just installed on my laptop and going to my huge Desktop now...
I have been using Ubuntu since my change from openSUSE back in 2004 and I have never looked back. Every year the desktop becomes more and more polished, to the point that people come to my house, I have a DLNA server running Ubuntu, and they check all the cool things that I am doing in linux and everyone just keeps on drooling...
My mom uses a netbook, just for browsing, chatting, viewing some documents and checking some media. I replaced XP with Ubuntu and I didnt get one complaint. XP era she was calling me everytime to update the anti virus, check new updates...
Boy, it made my life easier :P
@TheSunman89
When Ubuntu works with a damn Broadcom WiFi chipset, I may try it again one day.
@TheSunman89
To the downloadmobile, Robin!
@TheSunman89
I would put it on my laptop in a second if the battery life could hold a candle to win7.
Get on it!
@TheSunman89
Awesome, I can't wait to run it on my PS3... Oh wait, DAMN YOU SONY!
@Gibson here here. I happen to own 3 dell laptops (not through choice mind!) and none can install ubuntu without connecting directly to my router first. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Still the best linux though for my money.
@TheSunman89 The general gadget geek (Engadget) doesn't seem very clear on this. April 29 had been designated as the release day a long time ago. The RC is unrelated, it came out a while ago. It's just that the Ubuntu website was a little slow in updating so the home page still had the RC on display. And also, LTS does not mean "final version". Every four releases is designated as LTS. That means Ubuntu developers will continue providing updates for it even after the next version (10.10 Maverick Meerkat) has been released so that corporate users or people on old hardware don't have to upgrade twice a year. Clear?
@Streetfights Ubuntu has always been better at battery than Win7 on dual-boot, around half an hour better for me. I can tell just from my fan because Ubuntu rarely spins the fan up. It probably helps that I can run Ubuntu at 2GB RAM with no paging file, so the HDD doesn't have to be constantly spinning.
@TheSunman89
Wow, music store, cloud services, social network integration..
I think Ubuntu is about to become a major player. At least, I hope so :D
@FORDY If I am aloud to mention my Aspire One with Ubuntu and 2gb ram.... It's brilliant. Sorry if I upset anyone but it is realy good and not stupid!
@Gibson
wire it in, install wireless drivers, restart, done.
dell broadcom drivers have worked well for the past 2 releases, granted their ability to show signal strength uses either 0, 25,50,75,100 which is a cop out, but the drivers work fine. Im using a broadcom Mini N card in my vostro 1510!
@oliver0907 That's a problem with the proprietary drivers for the wireless....always a pain in Linux
@Gibson
Fwcutter allows broadcom drivers to work natively. Welcome back to ubuntu.
A WINNER IS YOU!
Downloading as I type
New UI looks .... Won't comment till I use it !!
@GnuGeek Out with orange and beige, in with aubergine and black. Aubergine = purple.
@ndrwme I was just about to google that
Just set it up in a virtual machine two hours ago. Haven't gotten to totally mess with it yet, but I shall.
Ubuntu for the muthafucking win.
@dnkoutso
Yo Dawg,
For real!
Although I prefer Crunch Bang or Pardus. Ubuntu is as close to mainstream as it gets for Linux.
@Eternity
The shit's real up here!
Engadget... you know that a new version of Ubuntu comes out ever 6 months, Right? (hence the name 10.4 as in April 2010)
@whatpoint77 Yeah I don't think they know that... fail.
@whatpoint77 lol they did not know it. But yet they know within seconds when an app store app is rejected. They know when steve jobs answer emails. They know when products that are to be delivered tomorrow arrive a day early.
But yet they did not know ubuntu releases every 6 months lol
FAIL!!!
Ohh my an app just got rejected watch it appear in teh front cover in 3...2....1.....
@whatpoint77
You expect Engadget to know technical details of real tech ?
Shame on you this a blog by a bunch of Mac using gadget fiends.
@fourthletter
I am going to assume everyone in this thread is really sarcastic...
*nods*
haha you guys are all hilarious!
@whatpoint77 Maybe the editor writing it doesn't use Linux, but was the first to write the article? Just a thought.
@FrankDTank Well I didn't know the iPad 3G was shipping today either. Engadget seemed pretty sure everybody was aware of that.
I've been beta testing this for about 2 months now, and I must say, I'm very impressed. I didn't need to install any drivers at all. Compared to 9.10 its a dream. I highly reccomend it
Ubuntu 10.04 is FINAL not RC, check ubuntu.com's main page!
@hajj3 when did this happen? It was rc like 2 days ago.
@aseaofflames It was released today
Couple of clarifications. New versions of Ubuntu are released every six months (in April and October) so there's nothing "already arrived" about this one.
Also, the release candidate has been available for download for a while now. The one available from the link is the final release version, with LTS.
Long time support is already out as of 7 minutes after this post was made
It's out now, I'm seeding it at 100 Mb/s.
Enjoy the cool new interface and features!
Sooooooo tempting. These guys have come a long way!
Sadly I have no reason to run it right now.
Ill be torrenting this tonight with plenty of follow up seeding. Good stuff!
Was on ubuntu then windows 7 came out, never booted ubuntu for like months. Guess i will try out this new ubuntu
@1mc I am in the same boat. I was running the netbook remix and was super happy but I switched to 7 to test it out and I haven't gone back. I kind of want to go back to Ubuntu because I liked being free of Windows, but there is no "real" reason to.
@bondtastic Yeah I was in vista and the constant crashing. make me go to ubuntu. I guess no more random crashing but I HATE VLC player, it's slower for some reason. Windows 7 came out, i upgraded over my vista and the crashing stopped significantly. Didn't go back after.
@1mc
Dragon Player isn't bad, and this release of Kubuntu is quite light-weight in resource consumption. Take a spin with it; my experience has been great with it so far.
please change the image to remove the "release candidate" circle, its misleading.
I had to use Ubuntu to program a university project.
It was a terrible experience and i had to spend hours to make it compile what i wanted. Linux is still very very far from being as user-friendly and intuitive as Windows.
@GGG Learning curves is so steep in linux, I agree. But once you got the hang of it, you should be fine. Windows is much user friendly than ubuntu. The only thing good about ubuntu is it's free.
@1mc
With new software center you can use Ubuntu without ever opening Terminal.
