Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid Lynx' arrives on the scene
It's been less than a year since Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" was released, but the next big version of the Linux OS has now already arrived to take its place: Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx." In addition to the usual tweaks and fixes, this one promises a boot speed that is "noticeably quicker" on almost any machine (and especially on those with SSDs), along with a range of new features including a social networking-oriented "Me Menu," Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0 for easier access to new software, and a slew of new cloud-based services courtesy of Ubuntu One -- not to mention the Ubuntu One music store. The release also marks the first time that GIMP doesn't come pre-installed (you get F-Spot instead), and it is naturally complemented by Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition, which promises even faster boot speeds and other optimizations. Ready to make the jump? Then you can grab the Release Candidate right now at the link below, or you can wait a bit for the final Long-Term Support (LTS) version, which is said to be "just around the corner."
Update: And just like that, the LTS version is out! Get it at the source link below.

I got a 5-yr old Thinkpad - a T20 - with Linux Ubuntu 9.02 on it. What's a good wireless card for it to connect to my Uverse home server? Anybody got any recommendations?
Many thanks people.
@kstagg by the way - I will be updating that version of Ubuntu with this one. I agree, this looks slick. Just hoping there is less "tweaking" that has to be done and more can be done by just using the menus like in Windows or Apple OS systems.
Sorry, am still a noob when it comes to Linux as admittedly Windows 7 is my favorite OS.
@kstagg It is a shame that some things have to be ironed out. Nvidia drivers are a favourite.
It's because everything on the CD is free: they make it like that so you can just plop it on as many CDs as you like and hand them out without worrying about it. Thing is, stuff like Nvidia drivers and some broadcom wireless drivers aren't free for you to hand out in the same way, so they can't include them. :(
I may or may note have sat up running "update-manager -d" this morning until I finally got the LTS version to show up (instead of the RC). Of course, this was an effort to head off the inevitable onrush of Ubuntu-ers clogging the servers when it was posted to the site.
In fact, I was downloading the LTS CD for my laptop in class two hours before it was posted as a headline.
Regardless, the torrents are the way to go for some reliably speedy downloading. Just sayin'
lOOKING fORWARD TOTALLY!!!!
I replaced mac osx with Ubuntu RC on my old macbook last week. It was incredibly simple to install and a blast to use. I do not miss osx at all.
Been using Ubuntu since 6.10 and this is the first version which finally motivated me to get rid of Win(dose) all together. It's just a single boot ubuntu system for me, with a Windows VM for those rare occasions. Go Ubuntu!
OMG!!!!! i woke up at like, 5:30 to download this and it wasnt there. went to school. came home, and just about cried because i was so happy! thank god for metalinks... makes my life FASTER!!!!
Been running this for a few weeks now, it's pretty nice.
...and the crowd collectively sighs in disinterest.
@Robo Look around. You see all those comments? Do they say, "lack of interest" to you?
yes, it boots in 0 seconds! Doesn't even boot on the VM, I'm downloading Fedora 13 tommorow. So much from me, I never liked it, never will, but I think its going in the right direction for Linux.
Not to be nit-picky or anal-retentive but can we use proper names instead of just calling all OSes with a Linux kernel "Linux." Linux is in fact just a kernel and most of the distros you are referring to are actually GNU/Linux operating systems. If you aren't familiar with GNU, please see:
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
Anyone know if this supports accelerated video decoding on the Core i3 and i5 chips yet?
Just installed via boot camp on my snow leopard MacBook 2.1 from 3 years ago. Smooth as silk. No silly refit business, just straight forward boot camp and then install.
Have been out of the Linux game for a few years, but started 10 years ago with suse 7. Really looking forward to getting back into it.
Well done ubuntu. Thanks for the new release!
This is a step in the right direction for the GNU/Linux using community, and for open source as a whole. Please, I urge you, tell your friends about GNU/Linux. Hand out free LiveCDs. Unlike Windows, you're legally allowed to give copies away. Also, unlike Windows, you can try various GNU/Linux distributions out first without committing to an installation. The time is now, let's break free of Microsoft's locked-in world. :]
Now we just need a smartbook with the ARM version of Lucid Lynx onboard.
Anyone else see that "Bluetooth" is no longer supported when updating? Are those specific drivers for one's own Bluetooth adapter (I use a dongle), or Bluetooth as a whole?
I don't use it often; just curious how it is affecting others.
@bravokiloromeo
I think all that means it that Canonical doesn't provide support for that specific package any longer. It looks like it has been moved to the Universe repo.

I've been using Debian then Ubuntu since the start. Running 10.04 on my media PC for the past month. Great, great stuff for those who don't need to run particular Windows or Mac apps and whose hardware is in the vast array of hardware supported by default (without installing drivers and so on).
I have tested every Ubuntu release in the past 3 years. I can now confidently say, Ubuntu is better than windows 7. It was not better in older releases (at least for me)
The 'tour' on the Ubuntu webpage is a welcome addition, and the presentation is quite nice.
downloading it right now :)
Do we get support for Intel GMA chipsets yet?
As a long time Windows user, well at least since 95, to the current Windows7, at my new job, my Laptop has Ubuntu installed on it. The Beta version from a few weeks ago, I'll have to update it to this release version. First time using Linux. I'm still learning my way around it. There's some Pro's and Con's I see with it. For FREE though, you really can't complain which is why it's being used at work for 99% of the computers. Runs pretty good, even on my old laptop. It's BETTER then I expected it to be. I guess it's come a long ways .
I've always wanted to like ubuntu, but there really is just no point to it.
It only makes sense to use from a consumer standpoint, because it can't naively run software that is required by many different fields of work.
I don't see how it has any real user base, but I guess nerds that think they are cool for using it is a large enough one.
@SLUSHIE
You know something, your comment made me remember Sheldon talking about Windows 7 being the best OS or something like better than Vista or XP, in one episode of the Big Bang Theory.
After watching it I told to myself: Do the writers of that program know that WE NERDS USE LINUX?
I always upgrade with the *.10 version. they usually fixed all the bugs of the *.04 version. It runs smoother and is less likely to crash with my horrible ATi GPU.
Imagine a tablet liekthe iPad running Ubuntu. I would buy it the next second.
@Trickymaster
Wouldn't that be a tablet inherently unlike the iPad?
@Trickymaster
I think he means the form factor.
Personally, KDE seems much more ready for that type of switch. I personally would love a KDE-based tablet. That would be sweet!
Right now, I'm commenting from Lucid Lynx..!
Damn you Canonical, when will you focus more on the Kubuntu spin... As much as I'd like to return to my old love, Debian, I ain't gonna use GNOME no matter what, so it's still Fedora for me... KDE/Qt FTW!
Did they ever fix the ATI driver issues?
@redroute1 Try the radeon hd drivers. Its up to AMD/ATI to fix issues with the fglrx driver, since it's closed source.
@redroute1
They work great for me. What doesn't work so hot is KDE's KWin Compiz integration... I WANT it to start on login! I have everything enabled, but it won't do it!
A question: I have the previous Ubuntu on my laptop, if i install this does it mean i'll lose everything i had installed and everything on my desktop?
@Psyg If you do a distribution update your current release will updated. Run the update-manager and you will be prompted to do so.
However, you should always have a backup of your personal files (the ones in /home)
I don't know much about ubuntu but I have ubuntu 9.10 and I want to upgrade to the new version is there an easy way to do it without having to unistall 9.10 and then Installing 10.4. Thanks for any help!
@HarolD Run the update-manager. See above explanation.
Windows 7 in the Front
Ubuntu in the back
I am upgrading as we speak... but the servers have been so busy that the download took most of the day. good for you canonical!
ubuntu already boots twice as fast as my windows install, never slows down or crashes on me, and is generally better for everything except gaming, so i am looking forward to seeing how much they can improve on that.
@rabidchicken If you dont want to strain the webservers http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#bt is a good option.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix, and Windows 7 Starter on my computer. I am a college student, and all of the programs that I have to install natively on my netbook I use Windows 7, For things like documents, games, EVERYTHING else. Ubuntu is DA BOMB!
Wubi for the EPIC WIN!
@gigarath
I am currently in the process of talking to my college's administration to make the programs Ubuntu friendly, it's because I really don't like how M$ is trying to rule everything.
I am using 10.04 since the RC on my Thinkpad Edge 13. Just the Realtek-Wifi-Chip needed manual installation; but its was just one line in $Bash. (o:
What to do next? Oh, yes ... I have a second PC with 9.10, it needs an update. *yeah*
My first Distro was RedHat and it fails to boot on that olf AMD 400MHz machine. So I've used Windows again for one year. Than I gave it a second try and Ubuntu rocked my underpowered PC. Maybe it was 6.10 or an earlier version. The switch to 7.04 doesn't fit well an it was a mess. I decided to use Debian for more stability. Since 9.10 I am a Ubuntuuser again. My decission was based on getting newer software for my music production; compiling Hydrogen and Ardour2 on Debian was a never ending story when the kernel was updated again. I can't say how long I will be running Ubuntu and wether I will stick on LTS only. Sometimes changes are to quick and sometimes it can't get fast enough.
By the way: Windows is history! ^^ Mac hardware looks stupid!
@poinck
"By the way: Windows is history! ^^ Mac hardware looks stupid!"
I think I just found a new best friend. =)
@gigarath
Did you tried to install Ubuntu on your work machine without getting fired? ^^ *smile*
I think the power of Win7 is Ubuntu
it make them work harder
Very nice awesome
