Adobe CTO says Flash 10.1 for Android in June -- will Froyo follow suit?
Let's take a break from Apple and Adobe's back-and-forth, shall we? Instead, we'll let the latter company talk about its work with Google, specifically the Android platform. Flash-based CTO Kevin Lynch said today in a post, "We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June." Good news, indeed, but with all this talk of Froyo having native Flash support, and this month's conference serving as the largest gathering of Android developers, we can't imagine a better platform (pun intended) for Andy Rubin and company to unveil its fragmentation-curbing Froyo update. Might Flash 10.1's May preview / June release schedule line up with the OS, as well? Just some fat-free food for thought.

And then the long wait for HTC to update Sense...
@weeman
looks like someone needs a charge...
@N900androidOS
and a sim card...
@weeman
If 2 of the biggest PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE like Apple and Microsoft agreed with HTML-5 being the future, then we like SHEEPS have to AGREE WITH THAT? Excuse me but God gave us a brain to use. Let me go the Google way, for sure they will be offering THE 2 OPTIONS, not only the wanted by proprietary soft companies.
Hey Adobe seems like Google is your ONLY FRIEND these hard days, dont let us down.
@Beatnik How was that a reply to his comment?
@weeman
i hope its quicker than normal. just got my incredible, haha...
however i am sure we will have root before then, so i have no worries about getting the latest update
@MrGoodCat
Seeing the battery so low while playing flash just made me chuckle!
Now it maybe just that he was playing for too long or he didn't charge the phone last night... but the coincidence is funny i think! :)
@Beatnik The plural of 'sheep' is 'sheep'.
@weeman
Is it a little ironic that the battery level is at yellow? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Flash on Android devices – but just funny that one of Steve Job's claims was that Flash is a battery drainer.
@weeman Been waiting for froyo to be released for almost 6 months now. Just flash it. Impressions. http://j.mp/nexus-2-phone
@Beatnik If God gave you a brain then why are you supporting a format that takes Adobe months to bring to a platform, likely won't be hardware-accelerated on all of them and requires it because it's so resource intensive and naturally requires an IDE separate from the device manufacturers to author content over an open industry standard that is inevitably the next evolution of the web and one that manufacturers have working as soon as they ship the products?
Yes, HTML 5 is lacking compared to Flash but unless companies forcibly remove Flash from people, they will cling onto it for dear life instead of moving the web forward in everyone's best interests.
Have you guys even seen the videos of Flash on the Nexus? They are absolutely terrible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9whFavOb2U
Let's assume God hasn't given you a brain but has at least granted you eyes. That video is Flash 10.1 running on Android jittering all over the place on a phone with a 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM. Role out accusations against Apple and Microsoft all you want, the evidence speaks for itself and that evidence says Flash sucks on a mobile multi-touch device.
Flash is Engadget's new iPad.
@grandmainger
Very true. Getting a little tired of hearing about flash. Moar gadgets plz.
I don't want to see Flash or Sense UI on my Nexus One! Never! It's closed source malware.
By the way, I don't have Mac at home. (o:
@poinck
Go back to Apple camp.
@cdf74dc9 Really? This would be hell! I just hate Flash and all other kinds of closed source; including Apple software. (This was kind of misunderstanding)
@poinck
You have the option to disable it as usual honey
can't wait to see those non-intrusive (NOT) ads on my smartphone
@erwin I'm sure there will be a plugin in the 2.1 browser to block ads. Anyways, I can't wait :)
@gargle there are ad-blocking programs on Android, they even block out app ads.
I can't wait for this to come out so everyone can see how much flash sucks on portable devices.
@macmann That's going to be the big question isn't it, can Adobe deliver a Flash environment for a portable device that a) doesn't reduce the battery life to seconds rather than hours, b) gives acceptable performance, c) doesn't introduce any attack vectors and d) actually works with applications that expect a mouse and the ability to hover over interface elements... If they can, then good on them but I have my doubts.
@macmann
And to see people attempt to play silly Flash games embedded on web pages... instead of downloading native games and apps made specifically for their phone.
Remember when the iPhone only had "web apps" and THEN the App Store opened?
Man... I can't wait to need an active data connection just to play Flash games...
@macmann
Agreed, this is only good news if it can be enabled/disabled on the fly like running the Flashblocker add-on with Firefox.
@BOFH
Wow you did a great job of repeating jobs recent letter!
A quote from somewhere:
*The reason Apple won't include the Flash player is simple – allowing Flash in iPods/iPhones would allow folks to acquire content without iTunes. Jobs isn't interested in giving a choice to users – he's making sure Apple is the monopolistic empire that Microsoft tried to be.*
@WindowedApple Do not disturb your head, Microsoft is about to release Silverlight 4.0.
Very soon, Firefox will be squeezed with lack of H.264 support, unless they are ready to pay...Yeah! lets welcome the wonder HTML5.
@NewBie
Google's acquisition of On2 is going to help Firefox. I have read that they are expected to make the VP8 codec open source and may announce at the IO conference next month.
@WindowedApple Flash also enables Safari to be even more porn-friendly and we all know Jobs' stance on porn.
Quite apt and amusing how low the battery level is on that screenshot!
@RincewindWiz
I was just going to post that.. in fact, almost all android screenshots have some kind of negative notification on the top, missing sim etc...
@RincewindWiz
You made my day! LOL!
We look forward to delivering 15min of flash before you're device is dead...
lol @ the battery meter.
@RampantNinja They were using Flash for 10 minutes!
Android choice win.
That picture totally tells what happens to every Android Phone. It runs out of battery sooo fast. :-(
@fdomig Yeah! if you turn your phone to a game machine, it will not take you long to realize that even "normal" PC are not good for games.
@NewBie It happens ... uhmmm ... when I use gmail and a little bit of news reading. It sucks out all the juice in hours. I have to recharge during work AND at night.
@fdomig i have a nexus one, and since i am an educated user my batery lasts from 2 to 3 days.
@fdomig weird. I charge my Droid every other day spending lots of time reading websites like this, checking e-mail, updates to apps, and stream a little music (like 20 minutes). What are people doing...?
@fdomig do you keep the bluetooth on and have it constantly looking for wifi networks and gps or something? Only once so far with my Nexus after a lot of game playing was it running low during the day, otherwise the thing is fine to just be charged at night.
Last week it was Palm. This week, Adobe. Man this industry is so Melrose Place... so much bitching. I love it. LOVE it!
Hey what about the Palm Pre? We have been seeing demos for the last 8 months!!! I hope it will be a plugin that you can turn "on" or "off". Flash is not just for entertainment. It should be up to the customer if they would like to install Flash.
Android will go down in flames with the resource-hogging, battery-draining, bloated, buggy and insecure flash crap on it. Get ready for another Adobe failure. Apple must be ecstatic by these stupid moves of the 'competition'.
let's be honest : the only reason i want flash on my phone is just to be able to some websites (restaurants, hotels, ikea catalog, etc...), not to play games. and yes, i find it usefull to have it when i need it even though the experience probably sucks and drains battery.
@phearme the great thing is that once fennec/firefox makes it to android, you can add the flashblock addon and only use flash when you want it. the best of both worlds.
God I can't wait to see this hot mess play out on the droid, nexus one, and other android phones....
As an iPhone user I don't want Flash. I don't care. i don't even want the option.
And its hilarious that BOTH MS and Apple agree on how horrible Adobe Flash is...
So much for the Apple Haters...
@TheLondonExchange
You need a rehab from the brain wash of Steve. Which Android user doesn't want more function is simply an Apple fertilizer.
@TheLondonExchange I bet if there was a flash plugin for your iPhone you would download it
