Apple #1 US phone manufacturer, RIM enters top 5 worldwide, Motorola feels the burn

Apple, love it or lump it, has seen some big numbers lately: one million App Store apps downloaded, ten billion iTunes, and now it looks like the company can claim to be the number one phone maker in the US. According to Forbes, Apple sold 8.8 million iPhones in the first quarter, as opposed to 8.5 million mobile devices sold by Motorola -- quite a slide when you figure that four years ago the company moved something like 46.1 million in Q1. If that ain't enough to give Motorola pause, industry analysts IDC have issued a report stating that, while the mobile phone industry continues to recover (growing almost 22 percent in Q1) Motorola has been knocked out of the top five worldwide mobile vendors by RIM. We guess the next question is, will Motorola's all-Android, all-the-time strategy be enough to bring it back into the big leagues?

It would have been much handier to see figures of Apple, Android handsets, and RIM handsets. Where can we lay our hands on these figures?
Honest question here, does anyone actually manufacture cell phones in the US? Of the top of my head HTC, samsung, and LG are the closest by simple merit of not making them in china.
@meeit
As far as I know, no. Sammy & LG are korean, HTC builds in China me thinks, Nokia builds on different continents for logistics purposes.
@Damaga Also considering Apple only sell one type of phone. I think this is an important lesson for other manufacturers because the majority of buyers are people who want simple options and too busy to care about the details of every carrier and deal out there.

With Apple it's 3G or 3GS. I know they have restricted price brackets but HTC can surely manage a list of 10 at most.
U know the ADF (apple defense force) is in full effect.. Cause what u said is 100% true. The 3g shouldn't even exist it shouldn't been straight to the 3gs yea it got faster but that shouldve been done the 1st time and even still is missing some key features which are allegedly being address in the 4g. I went from the 3g to the 3gs but I sold mine an bought a used one so apple didn't get any upgrade money from me
I thought Foxconn was asian?
@ssgadget I dont mind being part of the 0.31% of the market using the HD2. I love the phone and love the freedom that comes with owning a Windows Phone.
To each his own. Motorola Razr was so bad I didnt even buy it when it was released back then...I went for a Samsung Z500.
