Considering the almost complete absence of love in the commercial marketplace for
Moorestown and
Moblin -- and the fact that there's no sign of
MeeGo building serious momentum just yet -- we're sure that Intel would've just loved for the drop-dead-sexy
GW990 to serve as the platform's crown jewel for 2010. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, because we've just been able to confirm that the 4.8-inch beast (and potential Dell
Mini 5 foil) has been wiped off the product roadmap. Though we don't know exactly what happened, the fact that Moblin is effectively dead and MeeGo isn't ready for prime time might be part of LG's justification for killing it off; if you might recall, the GW990 was introduced before MeeGo was official, and the original plan was to have it on the market in the second half of this year. Then again, this might be just as well -- we weren't impressed by the fact that LG was positioning the phone as a closed device
back at CES, and there are still plenty of open questions as to how Intel and Nokia plan to offer apps on MeeGo -- so let's just hope this form factor reemerges from LG's labs soon enough, yeah?
why have gadgets been dying all week?!!
@skyblaze
Another one bites the dust.
@skyblaze, Sure seems like it, not to mention crazy backstabbings and Crazy Hell Investigations...
@skyblaze
I dont know but something very wierd is going on! :S
@skyblaze Vaporware week.
@skyblaze Who will take my side at the helm of MeeGo now?! =(
Srsly! Everyone is canceling everything!
What are we in a gadget recession?
@skyblaze
WTF!?!?!? I Know!
@skyblaze
Microsoft probably killed it because it was one of their ambitious designs that people were talking too seriously, you can find a lot of other cool concepts they made on youtube.
As for LG and hp, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, x86 has no place in portable computing, hell it probably wouldn't still be so prevalent in the desktop market if it wasn't for Windows, with the iPad, like it or not, Apple showed that a specially designed OS on an ARM platform, gives the end user an affordable and fast tablet with hours of battery life, hp was smart to kill the sure to be disappointment and focus on webOS, now we just wait for JooJoo to die it's slow death
@synthesized
:D That was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the headline.
@JeremyBenthem That's understandable, but while all this is x86 hardware and architecture, MeeGo is still essentially a mobile OS. This isn't just some port from a desktop/laptop like the Slate was. ^^
@skyblaze
Wait, since when has Moblin been "effectively dead"?
@N900
MeeGo would still run on an x86 Atom, and the OS can't fix the issue of large size and high power requirements
@JeremyBenthem True. I also read from one of the commentators below that size was a huge roadblock for them to overcome.
@skyblaze
They're all scared of a WebOS tablet, because they all know how awesome it will be.
@skyblaze To answer your question. Our reality has a limited buffer for the tablets to exist in. This buffer has been overflowing lately, there's only room for so much. And because iPad 3G is finally being delivered today, all non-material tablets have been purged out of existence. It's like when you are playing COD5 and deploy 3rd claymore, 1st one will explode...
@DrDr Yeah, just like the way the WebOS phone totally dominated that market.
@skyblaze
THE GADGETS UNDERTAKER WEEK?
@abedinthehouse
No everyone is just having Gadget Abortions :( Are there no Catholics in gadget world.
@skyblaze
HTC PLEASE dont kill the EVO 4G
@SlappySquirrel Did any1 read the forum post at giz about how macrumor fans were sending death threats to every1 but apple who were thinking about making tablets?
@JeremyBenthem
not really affordable, but whatever :P
i hate it, if this is because of the ipad ill just... cut myself!!!
so many amazing gadgets have been killed off in, what, less than a week....
has apple really scared off all of these companies?
i dont want that piece of junk :'(
@skyblaze
A. HP buys Palm
B. last week's iPhone 4 criminal case (it confirms it was A new iPhone prototype)
C. Droid Incredible release on VZW.
The mobile phone world (which was going iPad's direction) completely changed this week.
@abedinthehouse
Now is the winter of our gadget discontent
It's clear now.... Every company is affraid of Apple.
@skyblaze Sad day for this week. Grr. Love the impression on that device. http://bit.ly/lg-gw990-opinions -- Just make sure EVO 4G is not a fallen unicorn as well..
@JeremyBenthem x86 still being prevalent on the desktop isn't necessarily Windows' fault since Windows has supported other architectures (Alpha, Itanium, etc.) At the end of the day it's basically down to blaming either consumers/businesses for staying with x86 or AMD for having extended the life of x86 by giving it 64-bit and thus making it less horrible =P
@skyblaze celebs lat year, tech this year
@skyblaze Apple patents???
@recharged95 You say that like you want the iPad to fail and yet you declare it to be the device that needs to be beaten so where do you stand?
This argument is quite common - Apple make a product, the haters latch onto every possible non-Apple device that comes along no matter how bad they are and then the products die off one by one or deliver a poor experience.
If you really want a working tablet or a good phone, why not just buy an iPad or an iPhone right now instead of bitching about other manufacturers not being able to beat their products?
First people wanted Windows 7 on mobile devices because it was such an optimal desktop OS and x86 because it runs Windows 7. Now those advantages can be ignored so long as you get Web OS bought from a dying company and all 2,000 apps that are available for it running on the thickest slate built since the 90's with a TN screen? The depths haters sink to borders on masochism just to avoid some infantile fear of stigma.
An Apple logo doesn't come with a "kick me 'cos I'm an upper-middle class prick" sign y'know.
In summary:
- if you want a tablet and you want other manufacturers to beat the iPad, you actually want an iPad and you can buy one today
- if you weren't planning on buying a slate anyway no matter whose logo is on it then stfu and stop hating for the sake of it
- until any of these other companies actually deliver something worthwhile that you can walk into a shop and buy, there is no discussion worth having about it's ability to compete with what you can actually buy
Is it just me, or is this rash of tables being condemned to vapor status today kind of disturbing. Is the next announcement going to be that that Google's tablet isn't going to see the light of day? Why today?
@ircmaxell Most of these products never really existed. Having a prototype to show a trade show is only a small step above vaporware.
@ircmaxell
"Round 1....FIGHT!" - "ugggggghhhhggghhhhhhhhhhhh"
K.O.
"YOU LOSE!"
worst week ever!! More and more gadgets are being brutally murdered!!
And who are we supposed to call? Ghostbusters? CrimeStoppers?
Bah!!!
@IvanP91
Don't forget HP bought palm too. Ughhh...I would have loved to see the Lenovo Ideapad U1 hybrid with WebOS or HTC HD3. All our gadget dreams are being shattered one after the next.
@IvanP91
CrimeStoppers are not availabe, Apple called them to investigate on Jason Chen.
@IvanP91
Personally, my dream gadget has an ARM Coretx A9 dual-core with 1024 MB memory (think that's possible), running at 1.5 GHz and featuring top-of-the-line PowerVR graphics behind an 8-inch tablet running Kubuntu with the correct hardware-acceleration drivers installed (Compiz effects ftw!). Oh, and a couple USB, one FireWire 800, a headphone jack, an HDMI out (maybe a mini) and an AC Jack.
Of course, my idea will slowly be split apart into different products and a comparable device will take until past 2012 to release, and by that time the world will be gone anyway...
Damn...another soldier down. RIP you secksi looking piece of vaporware.
@ThatDudeSolo hawt end secksi
Thats what happens when you report about gadgets prior to their actual release.
Im just glad the iPad came true
@CMiCH
iPad coming true is probably why none of these others will.
@Tes
This is not a tablet, this a phone. why does everyone needs to compare every single device with the Apples ? freaking itards
@jdm28690
Grow up...
@Tes I don't like his slandering monikers, but this was gonna be a phone. MeeGo will be in handhelds of all sorts, but this particular one had a cell radio.
@jdm28690 Actually.. it isn't really going to be anything anymore.
@jdm28690 ey! Why you gotta call people itards? jerkass
@Tes
The iPad never really came true.
There's something fishy going on in tablet land...
Is this the week of broken dreams and promises? Each time they cancel a product a unicorn dies. :(
