Considering the almost complete absence of love in the commercial marketplace for
Moorestown and
Moblin -- and the fact that there's no sign of
MeeGo building serious momentum just yet -- we're sure that Intel would've just loved for the drop-dead-sexy
GW990 to serve as the platform's crown jewel for 2010. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, because we've just been able to confirm that the 4.8-inch beast (and potential Dell
Mini 5 foil) has been wiped off the product roadmap. Though we don't know exactly what happened, the fact that Moblin is effectively dead and MeeGo isn't ready for prime time might be part of LG's justification for killing it off; if you might recall, the GW990 was introduced before MeeGo was official, and the original plan was to have it on the market in the second half of this year. Then again, this might be just as well -- we weren't impressed by the fact that LG was positioning the phone as a closed device
back at CES, and there are still plenty of open questions as to how Intel and Nokia plan to offer apps on MeeGo -- so let's just hope this form factor reemerges from LG's labs soon enough, yeah?
They've all realized that after actually going hands on with an ipad that what they were planning on making wasn't going to cut it...lol
it's only tablets/slates that are dying...
These few days should be renamed to Slateopocalypse. First the Courier, then the HP Slate, and now this. Im still weeping for the Courier. Would have been awesome.
It's really too bad... I like that form factor and size a lot. I would have been willing to fork over up to $1500 for it.
What the hell is going on this week?!?11!
Goodness! The gadget killing plague is spreading.
This has been one depressing week:
1) Courier Killed
2) HP Slate Killed
3) Moorestown killed
4) WES fail by RIM
ffs...someone make it stop...
@Plazmic Flame As much as I hate to say it, these devices were vaporware and we're seeing the iPad as the bar getting set. These companies need to do better than the current vaporware. They need Android. I am leaning toward getting an iPad but I would also like to see some killer competition start to step up. So to all the other manufacturers I say it's time to step your game up.
@ipaladin it doesn't help that the 'bar' is filing a patent to be THE bar.
Ad long as the Dell Streak still becomes a reality I'm fine.
@XChrisX As*
And that, my friends, is why El Jobso tries his best to keep prototypes away from the public eye - god knows how many abortions he had...
@incognito
We know of at least one.
Shock and awe. An extra wide screen phone (check one) running on very high end hardware (check two) made by LG (check three) running a tablet based operating system (check four) partially developed by Nokia (check five) that is only in very, very early pre alpha stages (check six).
That's six reasons why this phone was bound to die. Get a grip people, this was inevitable. I doubt any of you really care anyway.
Who cares?
No one would have actually bought this so it was wisely killed.
Would you have purchased it?
On another note, I wonder how much money \ time \ resources are lost to creating a product that will never see the light of day...perhaps they will transfer the specs of this to another project..hopefully??
buuu is for the ashes of the volcano they stoped the world
This is not an Lg probuct. It's secretly owned by Apple....The "real" Iphone HD. ;)
blame the bankers and their mistreating with the international economy...
Good!
great info very usefull
iPad numbers show the rest of the industry enough information to pull out of the market. There will be less than 2 mil unit installed base and they don't want to dilly around in a little niche market.
So many good ideas going to waste... :(
Lame! oh well, can't really afford to replace my n900 yet anyways...
