Nokia sticks to its stylus roots, offers telescopic SU-36 for capacitive screens
You know what, we're not gonna make that joke. You can, but we'll just move right along to the meat of this story -- Nokia has listed a telescopic stylus for capacitive screens, the SU-36, which seems to have come out right alongside the N8 to serve as its Symbian^3 assistant. Compatible with the N8, X6, and any other phone with a proper touchscreen on it, this retractable accessory will substitute your fingers when they are either too cold or too imprecise to do the job themselves. It's not yet been priced or made available, but you'll be fine using that sausage stylus for another few weeks, won't ya?

Great!
Hi Guys, someone know if capacitive stylus are as accurate as using a stylus with a resistive touchscreen. I love using stylus to take notes, It's much faster than typing on a virtual keyboard and u don't have to worry about making mistakes with handwriting.
@NextGen From what I've seen, even the iPhone's capacitive screen is no match for a resistive one in terms of accuracy.
@NextGen
To take notes? Why don't you just use a small paper notebook?
@lafayette Is the joke the fact that it looks more like a tampon than a stylus?
@Johnny Tremaine lol I stopped using those with my first PDA. Also I tend to fill them pretty fast and lose them. And beside, I have my phone with me everywhere I go.
It's like asking Somebody to use an accounting book when he already got use to an accounting software... Kind of, u see my point right?
@SlimSpaceman Thks. That's what I was worried about.
Btw I learned the existence of electromagnetic stylus wich bring resistive accuracy to capacitive touch screen.
Hope to see this soon in mobile phone.
@NextGen
hard to be as precise as resistive when capacitive stylii are almost as fat as an eraser on thed, and mushy. Its a downgrade, in my opinion.
I hope Nokia doesn't think this is a decent substitute for resistive screen. I keep my nails slightly long, and like using them on a resistive screen to avoid the grease marks. My thumbs are just too big to use with those tiny OSKs. But at least Nokia is innovating by being first to offer one.
They still make styluses?
@Darkseider Or is it styli?
@Darkseider Some of the best PDA/PMP/phones in the world have them. Like my Xperia.
I would rather use a stylus on my 800x480 resolution screen than my finger on a 400x380 res screen.
@Darkseider
That's mainly for Chinese people. I don't find any other use for it.
Nokia always has a work around anything...
Can't someone just make a damn sleek, sexy tablet that has only stylus input? Thats all I freaking want.
This is just downright insulting.
I think it is apparent that both resistive and capacitive touchscreens have their place. I don't think calling one a "proper" touchscreen is accurate.
@DonnyChi91 That all depends on which one is accurate
@Darkseider I'd say they are both fairly accurate for input. While capacitive is much more comfortable for navigating an OS resistive has it's benefits for drawing and creative use.
@DonnyChi91 I think capacitive plus electromagnetic (like Wacom) is the best way to go. Accurate multitouch plus precise stylus input that doesn't get confused by your hand touching the screen. Also opens up novel input options for using both at the same tome, at least on larger screens like that Surface demo.
@dajimmers Wow that sounds like a device for me. Is there somewhere a slate or phone that use this technology? I'm interested. I love stylus input and touch navigation.
@NextGen
Unfortunately, there is no phone that has both capacitative and wacom technology. The HP Slate was rumored to have it, but apparently that just got nixed. Pretty much all the current tablet PCs on the market have it (the HP TM2 is your cheapest option in this front), and you might be able to buy a specialized slate with it... but there is nothing on the same plane as the iPad with both capacitative and wacom.
As a student with an old tablet pc (only pen function), I really wish there was a small, thin slate (like the Joojoo or the Courier. I'd be first in line to buy the courier) that has touch and pen functions, but alas I am still waiting.
@dajimmers That sounds like my type of device. Is there any touchscreen monitors for desktops that use that type of technology on the market currently? If so I'd be very interested in one.
If they don't make the joke about stylus's, they blew it.

Sent from my iPhone
@nelagster
I thought I was getting sick of the you blew it... but no... I'm glad its still going on!
@nelagster
lol!
Sent from my Xperia. While in a call, with GPS on, and I copied and pasted this line 3 times for effect.
That looks like a micro hotdog.
Pure ownage.
Try to imagine people using bare fingers in capacitive screens in that cold in Finnland.
@Verythrax Actually I did and I laughed.
@Verythrax You can't blame Apple for not thinking of a scenario where a stylus might be needed - they're based in California, and so they've never had to wear gloves, and never got rain drops on their screen (water really screws up touch input on capacitive screens).
@r3loaded not really, a global company needs to think globally. That's why Nokia is a worldwide mobile phone leader.
@Verythrax Why do you think god gave us noses? They're our own meaty styules. /sweden
@Dusse
You are either etremely myoptic, or pinochio....
do they sell them in hot pink?
(podcast reference)
Can't wait to see the korean developing a telescopic sausage to compete with that.
@Verythrax
I already keep a telescopic sausage in my pants at all times.
@quasistellar Me too, but I never considering putting it out my pants just poke my phone... in the cold.
brrrrrrrrrrr!
haha! I love all these jokes. The telescopic sausages!
Like the model number, would be perfect if they had left out the 3.
SU-6
Sucks is right
@System48 It's also one away from being a Su-35 fighter jet :)
If you read more than just text messages on your phone, like ebooks or even websites you don't want fingerprints all over the screen.
I wouldn't carry a stylus around but I like one for at home.
People always seems to forget about Asia. You know, those other countries beyond the US border. They do have to write. try writing anything in Japanese with precision using your finger.
@jakeZ haha oh man, trying to write anything in Traditional Chinese on a small screen... Impossible. Its hard enough on a full size screen.
Ever heard of pingyin and romanji? :D
But of course Nokia has to somehow support that though.
@jakeZ
well yeah, engadget stuff comes across as uneducated rednecks. completely ignorant of the 95% that is the world outside the us.
@jakeZ No one "writes" to input chinese in China. Everyone does it 3 times faster by using T9 or QWERTY pinyin input.
@notlofty
The N8 comes with Chinese handwriting recognition built-in. I guess thats why the stylus is included for free "in certain markets".
They blew it!
This is only included in "certain markets".
@sockatume Finger painting Chinese input is a real bitch.
@YpoCaramel : Precisely. Nokia owns Asia as much as it owns Europe, so they'd be mad not to keep stylus support.
@sockatume
But you can buy it if you want. They listed it iPhone compatible too.
