Official Twitter for Android app goes live, will go open source
Twitter had committed to rolling its own client for Android not long ago -- and like clockwork, here it is. Looks like the OS integration goes pretty deep, too, with support for Éclair's Quick Contact bar and tweeting straight from the Gallery app; you've also got a timeline widget for your home screen, and you can even see your friends' latest tweets from your contact list and the Google Talk app. It sounds like Twitter worked pretty closely with Google to make this happen, contributing the code to Android's trunk for open sourcing in the near future -- and developers will even have access to a set of standard Twitter APIs for their own applications. The only downside appears to be that you need Android 2.1 to use it, but that's just an excuse to run out and upgrade to a sweet new phone, right?

That sound great. Wonder when we(iPhone user) gonna get 1 too?
By the way I went to a verizon store today to play with the incredible. First thing I like it but it looks too plain and by the way it ain't even that fast as I though. Nexus one is faster.
@Flacofromny23
The Nexus One is the fastest unmodified phone. No sense UI or rosie framework (great ui/fw but adds bloat) to hog resources
@supernine
yeahh. cuz the iphone is super detailed and doesnt have the basic touch candybar form -__-
btw the back is not plain at all.
I agree in that the back ain't plain at all but the front. Is way too plain it almost looks like a cheap plastic phone. But the sense ui in beautiful.

Interesting that they wrote an app for Android instead of buying one like they did for the iPhone. That might say something about Apple (or Twitter...)
@Jason Murray More likely says something about the maturity of the existing Twitter apps on Android. Or maybe some existing Twitter app developers were approached and no one would sell to them -- though I find that difficult to believe.
@OldNewOne A new app loses the "maturity" fight every time. Mind you, the Twitter apps on Android have been evolving rapidly over the last 6 months. Maybe it was just a $ thing after all.
@OldNewOne That's what I though too but after trying this official app, I think it has more todo they wanted to integrate some new features which none off Android Twitter clients does and are simply not possible on the iPhone. Like the deep system integration and APIs for third party developers.
@Jason Murray Google also worked with Twitter to create the app. Apple doesn't work that closely with anyone, so Twitter would have been developing an iPhone app from scratch with no help. It was probably quicker & cheaper for them to purchase an existing iPhone app and mark it as official. On Android, they could do a lot more with the system integration and actually have Google's programmer's help with implementation and coding. They took the level of system integration for Twitter apps to a whole new level, now on par with the Facebook app. Remember: Apple didn't want people programming native apps to begin with at all. The App Store is a concession they made to people who felt like only relying on web apps wasn't enough.
I liked the app, but I need to be able to have multiple accounts. I control 4 accounts for various organizations I'm involved in. So for now I'll be sticking with Tweetcaster Pro.
It's so pretty!
No multiple account support = sticking with Seesmic
Not bad. Not bad at all!
well that's leave symbian with not official twitter app yet.
QR Code? :)
@beatsandmelody QR codes really should be used more...they are so useful!
This news goes perfectly with the new CM 5.0.7 for Dream/G1!!!
I like how the post says you might have to "go buy a sweet new phone", and works just fine on my G1 with CM5.0.7 with JIT and overclocked to 594mhz!!! this phone honestly still awesome in its own way.
pretty decent app. the only dislike i have is the facebook like homescreen. I'm more for the tabs up at the top.
Hey... Has anyone else noticed that both the Twitter widget and the Facebook widget are the same!
Now... At least I don't have randomly placed widgets everywhere, it's neat and efficient!
can we get a QR code?
Looks GREAT oh shit i have the Sprint Hero running on the good and great 1.5 os.
Woohoo!!! oh it's 2.1... ;(
It's very similar to the (awful) Facebook app. That means that it's inferior to Tuetoir (I don't know how to spell it, but that's close), which I'm okay with since I already paid for it. The app is definitely a good start, though, so it'll hopefully become great.
As a social user of Twitter this new app for Android works great. Very smooth. No lag. Especially fast on this new HTC Incredible.
the app crashes when i try to see my tweets. It works well seeing my DM or my profile, but when i try to acces to my tweets or my mentions it crashes.
I really really love to have the Desire on AT&T. I'm still waiting my upgrade is just in few weeks. May 16th. I guess I lost my hopes up for AT&T I'm going to tell them I'm Canceling my contract with them cause their being bunch of greedy dumb asses thinking any ANDROID phone release in June will fucked up their sales for the shit less iPhone 4G. Even the X10 isn't even coming out in May LATE JULY THAT'S FUCKING TOO LATE FOR ME. SO I'm forgetting bout ANDROID and stick with my crappy ROKR U9 flip phone. FUCK U AT&T!!
Wow, these guys are FAST at making an official Android app.
Unlike SOME PEOPLE.
AHEM.
motoblur = ughh
Isnt this the former Tweetie 2 app?
OMG look at all that change!
I currently have a Sprint Hero, so 2.1 usability isn't available. I definitely will give this app a go-around when I purchase an EVO. But Seesmic is doing pretty awesome for me for the time being.
@KidRobotXXIV root root root. its waaaay worth it.
@KidRobotXXIV
You should definitely root it. I'm using the Fresh rom on my Sprint Hero at the moment and it's pretty much flawless 2.1. I'm even able to run the new gallery app perfectly on it. The phone just seems so much faster as well.
This is Incredi...er EVOlut...er...AWESOME!
While this app is nice its no where near as good as touiteur app twitter app that's on the market .. it has light years to go to catch up... however compared to the official facebook at least this one delivers on functionality
Yeah let's go out and get a brand new phone, hang in I did, my nice new X10i FFS sony have a lot to answer for...
Does it support multiple accounts?
Nice. It's good to see more and more major developers and companies release apps for the android platform first.
i got the freindstream and im happy with itd - probably gonna try it some time though ...
I'm featured in the photo. :)
What's up with all the coins in the picture?
Other phone manufacturers, *looks at apple* ,watch out.
It is really good. I feel sorry for the devs who made twitter apps.
I'm definitely digging this app, I removed seesmic for it. I like the graphical elements as well as the overall smoothness of the app. Very impressive.
Ok I'm getting sick and tired of looking at the Desire. Looks like this is NOT COMING TO AT&t. so i give my hopes up on this nice looking phone. I'm just piss AT&T won't say a damn word if it is or not coming here in the STATES. But U.S. Cellular is getting it which is B.S. to me cause don't have Cellular where I'm at.
While the app isn't open source yet, I programmed a workaround for the retweet 'problem'. You can download my app called Retweet from the Market. Whenever you want to retweet something in the old way, just share(!) it with Retweet and the app will send the tweet back to the official Twitter app so you can retweet it in the old way.
Android 2.1?!?!! f-cking bullsh-t!
Does it do multiple accounts? If so I feel like crap for buying twidroid.
