Unsurprisingly, the chaps over at
iFixit have already torn their brand new 3G iPad to shreds. There isn't anything insanely shocking in there (no visible "magic," though there is some fragmentary evidence of a "revolution"), but it's still a pretty interesting sight to behold. So, what's going on in there? Well, for starters, the 3G iPad has five antennas, including one that appears to take up the whole of the LCD frame, and one inside the Apple logo; it's also got the same baseband processor as both the WiFi iPad and the iPhone 3GS. There are plenty more tidbits to glean from the teardown, if you're into that sort of thing, so hit the source link if you're so inclined.
After reading the tear down, I don't think the iPhone 4 is gonna use this chip unless is it really underclocked. The iPad has 10 hrs of usable battery life and 5x the battery size of the iPhone. If the iPhone 4 is getting a 4x resolution upgrade (near that of the iPad) and the battery only gets a little bit better, then the iPad will have a battery life of 2-3 hours, which Apple will not do. Also, a RAM jump from 256MB to 2GB would be intense.
@Complex Pants
Resolution doesn't make the screen draw more power (well it might by a small negligible amount). It's most the screen size that does because it requires extra backlighting, that's why if you turn your screen brightness down on your laptop your battery life is way better. Also the iPad uses an IPS screen which is more power hungry because it is not as transparent as a cheaper TN screen, thus it requires more lighting (IPS screens do look amazing though).
I wouldn't worry about battery life on the new iPhone especially after seeing the prototype with a considerably bigger battery. I would guess if anything the battery life would have improved.
@Complex Pants Good logic, but the iPad also has a much larger screen, which will probably draw a lot more than the CPU.
@reallynotnick
The new iPhone battery isn't that much larger from what we have seen. 1400mAh versus 1700 mAh (my numbers could be off). While the screen takes more power, more pixels means the GPU/CPU have to work harder. Also that memory jump is huge. Not saying it isn't going to happen, but I would see the next logical step would be 1GB, which would still be more than any of the new Android phones that are coming out. It could be the processor, but less memory attached. The "A2" or something.
@PaulMdx
Even if you double the battery life from the 2-3 hour mark from 4-6 hours that is still pretty bad for a smartphone.
@Complex Pants The processor has been outed as just another Cortex A8, right? With embedded graphics also in the same line as those used in iPhone chips? It's unlikely to use significantly more power (or to be more powerful) than any of the other Cortex A8-based chips already used in phones.
@Complex Pants
The iPhone 3GS is only 1219mah, (the original 2G was 1400mah). So 1700/1219 is about a 40% boost in capacity.
Sure it will have to push more pixels but most of the time you are looking at an email or text message so the difference is basically zilch. Of course with things like gaming then you are looking at flexing some more muscle. The A4 chip is pretty efficient and plenty of Android phones have 1Ghz processors and a similar resolution screen, so it shouldn't be a big problem.
Hell the EVO 4G has a 4.3in screen and only a 1500mah battery, while the 4th gen iPhone has ~3.5in screen and a 1700mah battery. I'm still however probably going to buy an EVO at launch to replace my 2G iPhone.
whenever ifixit takes these things apart do they put them back and are they in working order? soryr if this is a stupid question i just always wondered...
When is the iPad 3GS coming out?
Uh.....source link!

@yourstrulymichael9999
The truth is that they make great products that people like to use.
@Stanley
They make pretty products that force people to use only "Apple approved" tools and then proclaim that they are the best. I will never say that Apple doesn't make good products, but they are very pompous and stubborn and Jobs seems to be developing quite the God complex. It has gotten to the point that they are push criminal investigation against people who found a lost prototype. I don't think it will happen, but I really wish the tech industry would just pull support from Apple like Adobe has done with Flash. I hope Apple gets a reality check, because as it stands now, I will not buy an Apple product for myself just as a matter of voting my dollars.
@Complex Pants
Adobe didn't cut off support, Apple cut Adobe off.
@Complex Pants "It has gotten to the point that they are push criminal investigation against people who found a lost prototype."
You should really check the US laws about what is lost and what is stolen.
"They make pretty products that force people to use only "Apple approved" tools and then proclaim that they are the best."
Well, given the platform they are used for, they are.
@yourstrulymichael9999
Your articles compare incomparable things.
@yourstrulymichael9999
sigh, another typical hateboy post.
although this is already out of topic (H264 in iPad 3G article WTF?), i'd like to entertain you as i have sooooo much time.
do some reality check. no one should expect anything "free" to be patent-free nor patent-proof. although it's predecessor VP3 on which theora is developed upon is already made open-source, no one can be sure if the further development and implementations into the codec aren't encumbered by any patent. and let's not discuss into submarine patents, of which is like a ticking time bomb waiting for the troll time.
at least by licensing h264, they shouldn't worry about the unexpected lawsuits and patent trolls. it's always better for these companies to pay licensing fees than playing some game of russian roulette while praying not to get hit by lawsuit. remember, "free" doesn't always mean free as in beer.
but hey, browser makers shouldn't be afraid on the licensing fees whatsoever. they can just let the affected codecs to be rendered by OS level so they can get away. and nope, it wont be only exclusively on Apple platform. ask microsoft.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/30/microsoft-weighs-in-the-future-of-the-web-is-html5/
so yeah, even they are on the same boat. they know really well that patent trolls will only do damage and hinder innovations. and ironically they dont even mention Silverlight, of which is their own current implementation on web "standards".
mmm...maybe you have a question of why i said MS is no stranger to these patent stuffs. the answer is easy, look here.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/microsoft-says-android-infringes-on-its-patents-licenses-htc/
so you get the idea on why MS is insisting on something they can have control (errr...not totally control) even if they have to shell some amount of cash. yup, they deserved to get paid for their work, so that's the right thing to do.
so how about some other open-source stuff? being open-source doesn't mean it's free of patents,
http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/14/microsoft-linux-and-others-violate-235-of-our-patents/
as from consumer's POV, there shouldn't be any problem if you're advocating open-source. but remember, they are companies, and they are selling their products based on multiple patentable IPs, be it hardware, software, or both. it's not worth the risk to use some "free" open-source implementations if the risk is uncertain. they don't want to sell a product, only to fall into pit of lawsuits later on. ask Apple about their iPod.
Quite unnecessary; a waste of a good product in tough financial times. If people are so desperate for shots of components comprising a product, ask the manufacturer.
@Javindo
Yea...cause Apple is so open about stuff like that.
@Javindo Good luck with asking Apple. And don't worry it isn't wasted, they can reassemble it.
I pre ordered and got my iPad 3g yesturday. I LOVE IT!! It actually loads websites faster then my iMac and YouTube is a much richer experience. Unfortunately you can't use a USB drive via camera adapter kit. I tried and it said USB Drives aren't supported. Hopefully they can fix that with the next software update. Also NBC.com automatically forwards to the iPhone site and you can't get out of it which is really annoying. Fox (not Fox News) seems to work as a site but visa or streaming shows won't work. Only ABC and CBS do that. Overall I give it an A-... for now...
@B1986 congrats Im thinking of getting one myself but find mysell wasting Money on a product I don't find a good use for - sure I want it but do not need it. What good use have you found for it?
What a complete waste!!!!!
Its all the same because its just a giant ipod touch!
@Hydra Exactly I own an Ipod 3G and sure the big screen and the extra speed okey okey I will buy one but to be honest I have no idea what do with it, it will probably collect dust at home sometimes showing it ff to friends and family. It's cool n all but I don't need it just crave it :)
I would also destroy it, but likely not nearly this.. uh.. delicately.
Okey I'm falling in to the Ipad hype but to be honest I have no need for it I just crave it a bit. You know what I mean...
I wonder if the battery life is strained with the 3G use
William, theamazingipad.com
Great a even bigger cancer generating device.
Did they happen to find a hidden USB port inside? For the life of me, I can not figure out why Apple would not put one in it if they truly want it to compete with PCs.
Does iFixit buy stuff, take it apart, then sell the parts?
