Latest Windows Phone 7 emulator ROM unlocked, has Office and other goodies
So the ROM included with the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools refresh that was launched this week (to get it up to speed with the final release of Visual Studio 2010) has already been unlocked and torn apart over on xda-developers, and as you might expect, there are quite a few changes and additions in here versus what we've seen in the previous release. The most notable change appears to be the inclusion of Office, but we've also got dialer and in-call user interfaces, call history, call notifications (using Windows Phone 7's standard notification paradigm, of course), and a method for uninstalling apps. Clearly, we're still a long way from going final with this thing -- and fortunately, Microsoft has given itself basically the rest of the year to get it good and solid. Andale, ladies and gentlemen.

Sweet! good going xda devs!
@satish
Cannot wait for a ROM to be cooked.
HD2 + WP7 = win.
@BlackedOut
Office App is a card which, if MS plays it right, will usher WP7 into the business users area as well as pull in a lot of regular users.
And the videos they released of the email and powerpoint basic editing...
well, if they can really pull that off without doing a courier on us, I'm already sold!
@satish Microsoft proved how simplicity can work together with complete functions
@BlackedOut
Not happening. No WP7 drivers. The people at XDA aren't gods.
@BlackedOut
You realise the HD2 is not gonna get officially upgraded to Win7 right?
@Peter F
But they are very good at what they do at XDA; and probably some of the most dedicated people I've ever seen. You'd have to be to so fervently support a dying OS.
I have no doubts that someone will cook up a WP7 ROM eventually.
@ounkeo
Have fun using Office without copy and paste!
:p
@jubbing
You do realize that my phone came with Windows 6.0. It was officially upgraded to Windows 6.1.
Unofficially, it's been upgraded to three or four different builds of Windows 6.5xx. Then it went through Android 1.5, 1.6. and now 2.1. None of those OS' were ever designed to run on my phone. Through the efforts of the guys at PPCGeeks and XDA my phone is running the latest greatest available.
I have very little doubt that XDA guys will have a ported version of Win 7 ready for the HD2, TP2, etc by 1st quarter next year.
@bjsguess
Given the spec requirements for WP7 I think a ROM for the TP2 would be pushing it.
@bjsguess
The problem is that 6.0, 6.1, 6.5, 6.5.3, 6.5.5 were all based on Windows CE5 Kernel, Windows Phone 7 is based of CE7 and drivers are nowhere near exchangeable, porting between all of the 6's was fairly simple while Porting to CE7 would require a full driver rewrite, which no one can actually do.
I'm hoping for it on my HD2, but I'm not holding my breath.
@ohwut WP7 is based off CE6 R3, not CE7 (which is, as of yet, still in alpha).
@Apple Google Microsoft I have seen the copy cut paste feature inside the Onenote app on the emulator... It'll be there.
@BlackedOut I'm really hoping against hope that XDA dev will figure a way to put WP7 on the EVO
I'm on Sprint and have been waiting to buy a replacement phone for years now. I have the touch and it is a good phone if you put WM 6.5.5 on it but the screen is small and the battery isn't great and the resolution is low. I tried the diamond and it had a smaller screen, worse battery life and sucked donkey balls so I went back to my old touch/vogue. I wanted the imagio but Sprint only carries the Touch Pro 2 which is thick and has a keyboard but it is a pretty good screen.
I've set up a number of android phones for my clients and they seem in love for about an hour until they use it and find how it doesn't really meet their work needs.
I'm not at all in love with WM6.5 but on Sprint I can't get iPhone which seems pretty darn good if it weren't for ATT coverage (I had them years back and doubt I'll ever want ATT again and all my clients bitch about coverage on the iPhone that they can't give up).
I think android has potential but right now is pretty dang limited. I can't tell you how many of my clients have returned their Nexus one's, Droid and other nifty pieces of hardware because they didn't like Android. Again, I'm not bad mouthing android - it appears to be a very powerful but half finished OS.
Right now WP7 shows a lot of potential but since I haven't tried it yet I'm not sure how well it will meet my business needs but I'd have to guess better than Android does but hopefully Android will be great too by the time WP7 is released.
Right now I'd just love a new phone that meets my hardware needs like the EVO but with an OS that I want to use.
It's nice that they're taking thier time to cook this properly. I don't mind waiting for something good.
@tobsmonster2
same, if its good then i could wait :P
@HoldenMccrotch
I can wait, but MS plz don't kill it :-S . Last week has been a nightmare with all those gadget killings.
@satish MS doesn't really seem have a problem with ppl unlocking the emu, they just ask that the devs use at their own risk since WP7 isn't finalized yet.
@tobsmonster2
As much as I wanted a Windows Phone 7 phone, I couldn't wait any longer.
I switched from my LG Dare to the HTC Incredible. I'm not regretting it all at this point. We'll see if that changes once WP7 phones start getting released though...
@satish
Yeah will all the "killings" lately, maybe the iPhone 4 might be killed!
@satish
Why would they kill this? This is their flagship mobile device that they have been working on and everyone knows about it. The Courier was just an internal project that even Ballmer claimed to know nothing about, it wasn't even announced. I don't think you have to worry about this getting scraped.
nice!
these phones are gonna be sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
It is taking Microsoft a long time to bring all the details to the fellow customers and tech lovers. They are being completely anti-Apple, they are letting everyone know everything, before they release their product. I hope that works out well for them :)
But, honestly speaking, they need to quicken this pace of updates of new things or show something truly amazing, if they want to keep me on their heels for news of this WP7, or else I'll just lay back and wait for it to be released.

*sees a ton of info on the unreleased iPhone OS*
*wonders what you're going on about*
Developer updates exist for pretty much everything.
@imikedaman Yah, but microsoft take it slow, whereas apple brought it all out in one go
@mashinator
they did the same thing with windows 7 and it worked well for them. I guess they know if you have a good product it is better to let everyone know whats possible and what to expect.
@mashinator

*clicks on info on the unreleased iPhone OS*
*sees news about beta 1 and beta 2 and how the final version won't be out for months*
*sighs*
Good god don't blow it Microsoft!
Looking good I'll be buying one of these phones and a tablet too if you can find someone to make them for you.
This might get me back to Microsoft fast, liked the 6.5.
Meh ...
Nice
Actually the version of the latest emulator image shows 6176.WM7_RC1Escrow(buildlab).20100406.1457, being RC does that mean it's on its way to final so soon? The OS still feels quite unfinished.
@victorminC
I HOPE there are a couple more escrow builds before the release it to MFG. Everything I've read indicates that phones will be available in October. If they can get it out a bit earlier, I would be fine with that, so long as they make good on the promise to push updates at a reasonable rate.
@victorminC Sh!t looks like it still needs some work IMO:

AND Copy/PASTE damnit!
StupidUglyFailurePhone7
Justin who?
I'd be curious to know, has Microsoft said that by purchasing the phone you get access to the mini office applications or if those will be an addon much like Apple's productivity apps for the ipad? Also, these let you create Excel and Word documents right, not just view existing ones?
@nickyP
I haven't see anything about it but hopefully it will come with the OS like in previous Windows Mobile phones. They were viewing and editing existing documents in the demo. It will also link to you Live ID so there will probably be some synchronization with Office Live. So being able to edit existing documents would be a must.
I liked the fact that you can edit PowerPoint presentations. Couldn't do that in the past, just view.
In XDA we trust.
Just throwing this one out there..
What about if MS took a double screen tablet and loaded it up with Winmo7, lots of creativity apps and a nice size.. Im diggin it!
Is there anyway to use it with Win XP yet? I haven't really searched at all but I'm just wondering.
@Mitch
Nope, and probably won't be. Time to upgrade.
Niceee !
Ever since Microsoft pulled the Courier and HP announced they were disappointed enough in W7 on their slate and will consider another OS instead, I've pretty much given up on MS in 2010.
@VS Dude
Well that is unfortunate seeing as their pretty much getting a new lease on life in 2010.
@WixosTrix
They're*
I know that grammar police are probably lurking

If XDA pushes out a WinPho7 ROM out for the HD2, I would consider it, although I love WinMo6.5.3.more
Microsoft FTW!
I am so thrilled to see that MS, and Google are really bringing cool stuff out this year. This means close competition With iphone which is always good for consumers like us. Other day i happened to check out htc incredible and man was I blown away. As for MS its not too long ago when engadget leaked a bucket load of phones/tablets from Dell with WP7. Oh iam so haPpy and excited.
Please tell me:
How can you use an Office program when Windows Phone 7 is incapable of copy-paste?
