iPhone / iPad 'Spirit' jailbreak released to the world
We've been seeing the iPad / iPhone Spirit jailbreak demoed here and there for a few weeks now, and here we go -- the download is now available. The untethered jailbreak works on activated iPhone OS devices running 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2, although iPad owners are warned that "all this is still sort of beta" and might require you to restore if things break. That's not the worst thing in the world, we suppose -- anyone taking the plunge?

about time?
@SoyGood
Wait until 4.0 release and there's nothing to jailbreak it with.
@SoyGood
I wont do it..
I dont trust an amature.. Heck, I dont even trust the iPhone devs..
I am going to wait for Geohot to release his LimeRa1n or YellowRa1n or WhateverRa1n.. Its what I used to JB my ipt3g.
@SoyGood
Yeah, my 3.1.3 has been needing some jailbreak love for a loong time. The windows link keeps timing out for me though :(
Also, it says this is not a carrier unlock... I guess that means no tethering? :(
@uHorndog Good call. Because right now my 3rd gen iPod touch is stuck in infinite boot mode. It says on my computer it "was complete" But it never budged from the loading screen. Frick!
@magicmn717 Its gonna take a while, but try letting the battery die out.
@uHorndog GeoHot is the amateur here. If you've noticed, his releases are always riddled with bugs whereas the iPhone Dev-Team releases always work exactly as described. Maybe try more than one JB method before you get all omniscient on us.
Sidenote: GeoHot used to be on the Dev-Team until he got kicked off for being a douche nozzle.
@magicmn717
Now theres a scare thought. It would take 10 hours to run the iPad battery down.
@magicmn717
What is the model number and Storage capacity?
@tusing I think I got it. Not sure how.. but after about 3 force restarts, it still wasn't booting, but it appeared in itunes. So I did a restore and I think I should be good again. I hope.
@SoyGood Well of course you have every reason to be upset about completely free software. You have to work so hard to download their hours of coding, testing, rinse and repeat. Amazing attitude, there.
@uHorndog Model is A1318 and it is a 64gb 3rd gen touch. Tried again and it is currently on the rainbow-ish screen with the wheel spinning in the middle.
@flux
I know, but my iPod touch is my life. I use it to develop for Cydia and I have everything set up perfectly, and im sure there are ALOT of others who feel almost exactly the same.
So if I am going to return to an untethered jailbreak, I want to do it when I know everything will be stable.
I dont know what your on about Geohots jailbreak tools being unstable.. I have used all versions of his software on all kinds of different models of iPod touches and iPhones (for my friends) and I havent even had 1 single problem..
@uHorndog i used black rain and I NEVER got cydia to work. I tried everything. Literally every solution anywhere after posting on about a dozen message boards. I ended up having to use Rock instead. Cydia always just crashed.
@magicmn717
There was an issue with Cydia a few times but it never had anything to do with blackra1n.
I too had the issue, I talked to Saurik about it and he told me to SSH into my device and delete a few sources, so I did it and next thing I know Cydia is working and I resume my happy life!
Site is slow because of too many downloads. Alternative download link here: http://bit.ly/bTOhfp
@uHorndog I got it to work for about like.. 2 days by using the dev team jailbreak. Granted the blackra1n was easier.
I know what you mean by deleting the files, and I was told to do that too, and it didn't work.
And as an update, my 3rd gen 64gb is STILL on the rainbow screen with the spinning wheel. It's been... 25 minutes on that screen.
@uHorndog Are you kidding me!? Geohot is a fraud he only releases things after everyone else comes out with stuff. He's a fake and the next ziphone. Keep waiting on him and you'll never have anything. I predict he releases nothing new this year. The dev team are much more reliable than geohot, and they indorsed this comex release. They are the real deal.
@flux
And yet GeoHot has managed to stay relevant because he's brilliant. The DevTeam will happily acknowledge he was most talented of the group, but perhaps a douche nozzle as well. Regardless, you have him as much as anyone to thank for all the jailbreaking that's been going on these past few years.
@flux Other alternative is the one going to be released by planetbeing -- a blackra1n jailbreak for the iPad as well. Its a good day today. Video. http://j.mp/ipad-jailbreak-reactions
@Steve Jobs Clone i hope jailbreaking 4.0 isnt a bitch
@midnightprince7
Jailbreaking it wont be a bitch, Cydias developers are going to have to do alot of porting in order for their apps to work.
I have been developing with the OS 4.0 SDK for a few months now, and I can almost guarentee that 80% of Cydias apps will either crash upon start up, or crash once a backgrounding process is called.
To sum it up, ts going to be one hell of a ride for the Cydia world, it will almost be like the 1x days, but all over again at a faster pace.
@magicmn717 Put it into dfu mode and try to restore it with itunes. Google dfu if you need to. Hope that helps.
@Steve Jobs Clone
That's a good one. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when it'll be jailbroken.
@flux Thank you! Finally someone with brains! I have been trying to get people to realize geohot is not the real deal. He is the next ziphone.
@Steve Jobs Clone
It's called tethering!
@The Advanced Kind
Is iPhone unlocking dead?
@Steve Jobs Clone
According to comex (I think he's the developer?) the "Spirit Jailbreak" is actually a collection of exploits they've found, and by jailbreaking now they're only revealing one. The reason for the delay was never to wait until 4.0, but rather they wanted to wait until the 3G version was out so they didn't burn one exploit on WiFi then have to do another one entirely on the 3G version.
Dive! Dive! Dive!
How do I get Cydia?
@rhimbu
You blew it.
Their devotion is amazing.
@MrFairladyz
Well Said +million
@MrFairladyz good to see someone actually appreciate their work :D
Yay!! I've been waiting for this one!
@Stevenk
Me too! My iPad should arrive any day now, can't wait to try this.
What happened to waiting till 4.0 dropped.
@chosenone1 This particular exploit was already blocked.
Downloading now....
@Stevenk
Wow man! You made engadget into a twitter!
Gonna try it out now on my iPad. Waiting for 4.0 is stupid, it won't be out until the fall for the iPad, we need our jailbreaks now.
So can I multi-task yet?
@formetopoopon Sure can works great.http://imtransfer.im4mobile.com/uploads/3651127285340322614/Image.jpg?p
I like the jailbreaking spirit.
So I'm getting an iPad next week and don't have an iPhone. Never had one, always been on Android bc of Gmail addiction. What are the advantages of Jailbreaking a Wifi iPad? I guess just allowing install from outside the iTunes store, like with Cydia, but is that all?
@ColinScatt
Multitasking is available ahead of the 4.0 launch in the fall if you jaibreak. I've never actually jailbroken my iPod touch but it is compelling at times.
@Smarty2600
I was a proud owner of the PSP, and I used to mod it, until it got bricked..
After that, I bought an iPod, and I found out about jailbreaking a few weeks later.
I was terrified of jailbreaking because the thing costed me $384, and i didnt wanna brick it..
But then I found out that its nearly impossible to brick an ipod, so I did, and now I am happy!
Slightly OT so I apologize, but it's an iPad story so close enough, but when are you guys/AOL gonna start including H.264 encoded versions of your video stuff?
@Camperton
Agreed. I am sick of coming to engadget on my ipad and not seeing a huge white space where video content should be.
@DoctarPeppar
I think it's an AOL thing. None of their blogs use h.264 just flv.
