Apple sells 1,000,000 iPads in revolution's first month
Steve told us it'd be revolutionary, and if sales are the measure of a device's success, then the iPad seems to be well on track to validating its creator's bold claims. This past Friday, "just 28 days after its introduction," Apple sold its millionth iPad. 1.5 million ebooks have already been downloaded to the device, along with 12 million apps. Steve Jobs has also taken time from his busy essay-writing schedule to remind us that that's less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve the milestone with the original iPhone, and demand for the "magical" slate continues to outstrip supply. Full PR after the break.
Apple Sells One Million iPads
CUPERTINO, California-May 3, 2010-Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
"One million iPads in 28 days-that's less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Demand continues to exceed supply and we're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers."
iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*
Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.
*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

@magallanes Yeah, haters are also idiots.
Dang, that's a lot of iPads.
@coredump
Must be a bloody mess...
@coredump
Thought it would have sold better than the original iPhone. Expensive phone vs cheap computer? Congrats to Apple - make it less gimped and I'd jump on board.
Say what you will Apple or Steve Jobs, but it's a pretty cool device.
@coredump
It is like music these days:
Apple = Jessica Simpson
@Physicsguy89
Depending upon definition of "cool."
28 days later. 1 million zombies. I see a movie here.
@coredump
you know... ive yet to see ANYONE with one of these yet? 1 million sold... where the hell are these people hiding???
@skyblaze
Maybe you chose the wrong neighborhood to live in! :)
@FrankTheCrank
What the f***? What does that even mean, given the context here?
@skyblaze
I've seen them all over in NYC, even in the weirdest places. One guy was reading an eBook on his iPad at Wendy's!
@NHAnimator Difference is that that started in the UK!
@Physicsguy89
The only thing I hate about this news is that it's going to make Steve even more arrogant, given he is proving himself right time and time again!
Nice achievement though for Apple! Credit, where it's deserved!
@who said what
maybe so... but this includes home, work, hall, family, friends, friends of family... if an ipad discussion comes up in any of those situations it basically ends in "just an really big ipod, its a waste of money" and that's that..... just feels a bit strange. thought at this point i'dve seen an owner by now :\
@skyblaze
i've seen no one, but apparently a friend of a friend or something has one. i dunno that i'd want to take such extravagance (and honestly, that's what an ipad is) out in public to flaunt it....
@skyblaze
My friend bought 5. Not even joking. One for himself, and then 4 to bring home to Japan for family/friends that wanted one (he went back last week, and it hasn't shipped in Japan yet).
Prior to getting to use his iPad, I thought they were completely pointless, but they are actually kind of cool and useful for some things. That being said, I'd never buy one - at least the current iteration.
@skyblaze
No offense meant... it was just something I had to say! :)
By the way, I saw 2 of them at my work. I agree with @Wildman though... it's more about flaunting it. The vanity loses out to limited usability very quick though, in my opinion.
@mr. 88; who said what
(none taken, who)
and thats just it. i played with one at a best buy on friday. definitely cool and flashy, but it stops there. i was pissed cuz i couldnt even post a damn comment on engadget! (the entire comments section refused to come up after 5 minutes... rest of the site loaded fine, though) typing was manageable in portrait, but still annoying and landscape......... i felt like a dog trying to play piano. maybe its just me, but ill stick with my netbook kthx.
@Physicsguy89
your comment makes no sense. Become literate
@skyblaze where are YOU hiding? ;)
@skyblaze
You will probably see more now that the 3G version is out. At this point I don't think I'd be showing one off on the train just yet. I like all of my fingers.
@skyblaze U mustve missed the links for turning comments on, and then after u see one and tap reply, u must be signed in to leave a comment, or it does nothing....I am currently replying to u via my iPad.
Also, if u compare 1M iPad's vs. the 8M people in NYC alone, or the 309M in America, it will still take sometime for enough market penetration for u to see it everywhere.
Just sayin...
Err at home, I rarely take mine out of the home.
@skyblaze:
At people's houses collecting dust. The iPad is like the Wii - a novelty item. You buy it and are extremely excited about it for about a week, and then the novelty wears off and you realize how much it sucks.
@michaelwub The iPad has indeed sold better than the original iPhone at this point. It took 74 days to sell the first 1 million iPhones, the iPad sold a million in just 28 days, less than half the time needed to sell one million iPhones.
@Jordan
Get ready to be called a hater by the Apple faithful.
@Jordan You're just full of it aren't you...
Haven't used my mbp since getting the iPad, it's a better device for sofa surfing and email, and was better to take on vacation due to it's smaller size and excellent battery life.
Based on the number of people in the local Apple store demoing the iPad, it's selling by the truckload.
@skyblaze I saw one yesterday in a coffee shop (gasp!). The owner whipped it out of his leather satchel, adjusted his heavy frames glasses, polished his thumb ring and was looking around desperate for someone to ask him all about it. Unfortunately, someone did. Then a MBP owner sat right next to him and even he looked embarrassed...
@michaelwub:
Oh I'm ready for it and I expect it, I'm just putting the truth out there. If they want to fight over it and get all up-tight about it, let them.
@Jordan
Nice of you to make this assumption. Did you visit all 1,000,000 peoples' homes to figure this out?
All that really matters is that I have one, it is awesome, and I use it everyday....
I use it for these things:
- Remote Desktop connections to my 3 desktops
- Wireless touchpad and keyboard for my HTPC
- Typing a screenplay on the bus during the 2.5 hrs total ride to work
- Replying to idiots' comments on Engadget
Sent from my iPad
@skyblaze Oooh I see them all the time. Let me assure you the majority of them fit the "toe walking, mouth breathing simpleton" stereotype. Just wander about Manhattan and you'll see plenty. Particularly near: Madison Square Park, Central Park, Chelsea and near the Empire State Building (surrounding areas). It is quite funny actually. They all walk around like lemmings staring at the screen and almost getting run down by pedestrians, cyclists and cars. They are completely oblivious to their surroundings. Quite entertaining to be honest.
@skyblaze there hard to see as there is usually a crowd of people around them going "damn that sweet I gotta get one"
Again spoken like someone who hasn't a clue. I use my laptop for work, my ipad for liesure. I now find using my laptop frustrating, the ipad is faster, lighter and performs 95% of the tasks I would have used my laptop for. Have you used one? If not, your unqualified to comment.
@BMills"
And this:
"Sent from my iPad"
Is how I know you're a douche who would do anything for Apple. Take the Apple fangirlz out of the equation and you've got real opinions on the iPad. It's novelty.
I like my iPod and my Mac, and some times when it works my iPhone too, but people need to open their eyes on the iPad for what it truly is. Novelty.
@BMills
"@Jordan
I use my iPad for
- Replying to idiots comments on engadget
sent from my iPad."
Love it :)
@coredump
SH*T, a million ipads? thats not true, this must be wrong, I dont believe it
@hulahoophugs
namek.
(me and piccolo go way back.)
I think it's ironic that Apple users are accused of acting all superior, when those who really look down on others are the armchair experts like you who look down on the 'simpletons' are they stupid just because they don't agree with you?
@skyblaze
......A man was holding an ipad with his pinky finger and then.....
@coredump thats funny. Out of 1 million sold ive only seen mine and one other person owning one.
@coredump : and how many were returned?
@knightGeek
309 million people in the USA, that means 1/390 people have one, surely youd have seen ONE by now?
1,000,000 iPads and 1,000,000,000 Apple haters' tears.
I'm waiting for Rev. B myself, but it's amusing to see the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the iPad from the usual suspects. And it's only increasing in intensity after the Courier and HP Slate threw up the white flags before even firing a shot.
Steve Jobs dunks in the Apple haters' faces. On almost every play.
@coredump It was achieved in 28 days, which could be shortened to a week if Apple was not stingy enough and let international people buy it.
Who are you to judge that it's a novelty. I Prefer to use my
ipad because it's faster and more convenient than my laptop, it's not a novelty but a genuine improvement. Believe me, if it was rubbish I'd be selling it for a profit on eBay.
@wozburger
you should have gone over to him saying 'dude, im so sorry'
:P
@who said what I'm a proud owner of an iPad. I've finally ditched my under-par netbook. Will never look back. Much better than the slated Slate. More real than a Courier.
@Physicsguy89 The magic of the ipad is a combination of:
1. Awesome user interface - You have to use it to understand how great it is.
2. Great design - Aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder, but the clean lines, high quality finish make it much more elegant than any netbook in this price range...
3. Price - The price of entry at $499 is very competitive when combined with the design and user interface.
4. Does few basic things very well - The web browser, the ebook reader, the itunes and app stores, the email client, the photo viewer and the media player on the ipad are easily better than any comparable notebook (forget netbook) that you can buy at any price. When compared to netbooks, you can also add in the portable gaming feature as another area where the ipad excels in.
For now, these features are helping it sell to an audience that does not care about an integrated physical keyboard or the flexibility of a regular notebook (netbook). Personally, I have a Sony Vaio X. It cost me $1399 - with 64GB SSD hard drive + 2GB RAM, but it's price alone would eliminate it from most people's consideration. Otherwise...
1. At 1.5lb it weighs the same as an ipad AND includes a keyboard
2. Has a higher resolution LED screen than the ipad
3. Has all the flexibility of a full OS - came with Windows 7 Pro.
Downside is...2-3 hour battery life and sluggish UI (compared to iPad).
If I had to pick between my Vaio X and iPad I'd take the Vaio X every time. Again, you have to use it to know how competent it is and in a world of trade offs, it works better for my taste....but if you look a the combination of features, design and price - the ipad is a formidable product. I'd go so far as to say it IS revolutionary. Doesn't mean it's for everyone, but it is for a LOT of people. The same way the iPod and iPhone were game changing products.
@coredump Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
Meanwhile, my daily life has been iPad-free, due to the fact that it's not sold outside the US. :D
