Apple sells 1,000,000 iPads in revolution's first month
CUPERTINO, California-May 3, 2010-Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
"One million iPads in 28 days-that's less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Demand continues to exceed supply and we're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers."
iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*
Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.
*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

@HawtDawg I use mine for casual web browsing, blog reading, emails, Twitter, Facebook, eBooks, light game playing, etc.. while I'm on the couch, in bed, or on the bus to work.
@HawtDawg
yep, same here.
i still don't understand the upside to getting this over a netbook that costs half as much.
@HawtDawg
...buying stuff from the app store?
@HawtDawg Replying to stupid posts on blogs...
@HawtDawg Oh, they're only used for 90% of what people use their laptops and netbooks for most of the time: surfing the web, reading and writing e-mail, checking their Facebook and Twitter, playing games, watching movies and photos, Instant Messaging, in addition to: reading e-books, using it for maps and turn by turn GPS, making documents and presentations and spreadsheets and .... need I go on?
@BrianH
The upside over the netbook is the UI. Instead of trying to shoe horn a full version of Windows 7, Office 2007, Photoshop and 50 of your favorite apps into an under powered device that is susceptible to every threat out in the wild some people, including myself, choose the iPad. I've got a fully equipped Dell to handle all my everyday work needs. It has it's uses. The iPad has a different set of uses.
The iPad does these things very well:
email
social media
general Internet browsing
catching up on news
reading a book
watching a video
light game playing
tinkering with music production (Korg's iElectribe app is pretty cool)
portable document management
portable product portfolio management / presentation
light system administration (the VPN function rocks, just add RDP or VNC)
portable credit card processing
Where it shines against the netbook is the instant availability. You push the button. It's on. It's easy to carry and easy to use while standing, sitting or even walking. The battery life is really 10 hours. I used mine steadily on Saturday showing a rotating slide show and video during a festival with no problems.
Yes, you can do all these things on a netbook but the form and function are different. If you can get past the AntiAppleBias it's a really useful device. If you can't, get a netbook and accept that 1M+ people don't agree with you.
@BrianH You've only posted that like 300 fucking times.
I never like the device. But kudo to Apple and to the marketing department.
@mps Did you actually buy one? I highly doubt it. Troll
@mps The company you work for has a "marketing department".
Apple has an award-winning multi-million dollar industry-leading advertising agency called TWBA/Chiat/Day.
@SlappySquirrel
Same shit, different title.
I wonder how many people who bought them decided to return them
@Stevenk Probably none. It is pretty clear what you are getting into - ipod touch, iphone, ipad on display at the Apple shop. People aren't so dumb, you know.
@Stevenk
just search ebay and you'll find about 2000 pads for sale week after week.
@SSD
Right. And another thing you will notice is that iPads sold on eBay are more expensive than their counterparts in the store. The demand is very high, especially overseas.
@dio777 Exactly. I am in Tokyo, people are bringing 16GB Wi-Fi models and selling them for 75000 yen. And they sell fast!
@SSD The iPads for sale on ebay is just because the iPad isn't available outside of the US yet, so a lot of americans are trying to make a fast buck selling them to desperate early adopters abroad. That market will dwindle as the iPad launches internationally, and then you'll no longer see 2000 iPads for sale on ebay.
@Stevenk
There was a gy on YouTube who posted a re-boxing video and said he was returning it.
Of course, having heard what he said, it boggles the mind why he ever bought one.

"...demand continues to outstrip supply"
Really? Both the Apple store and Best Buy near me are loaded with them.
@mike71 That's funny, because Piper Jaffray just did a survey. 49 out of 50 Apple Stores we're sold out completely of both models of iPad!
And if the Apple Stores are out of iPads, I highly doubt that Best Buy stores are "loaded" with iPads.
@Garion It's certainly possible. The rather vocal minority that is the Apple fanboy would probably prefer shopping at the Apple store instead of Best Buy. Thus, Best Buy has a surplus of iPads.
@Garion
Dude, don't be fooled by the reports, like someone said a few comments back; it's 1,000,000 sold and not 1,000,000 bought by customers.
@Plazmic Flame I guess that applies to other company PR or does it just to Apples's?
@Plazmic Flame How's that cave you're living in.. Nice view?
@Garion Go to Best Buy's website you can see which stores have iPads. 6 stores local to me have all models available.
I wonder how many people decided to return them.
There will always be skeptics. There will always be disbelievers. And there will always be Apple to prove them wrong.
Over sales next year I'll buy iPad 3G S with camera,...
That iPhone comparison is a bit misleading. The iPad doesn't require you to buy an expensive contract from AT&T, of course it would sell more.
@Guess Who
Yes, most ipads will stay at home as a web browser for the couch
@Guess Who True, but it is the best device from Apple's line to make a comparison with - price and function-wise.
@Guess Who the first iPhone didn't either....and it was close to the same price as the iPad
@Guess Who what the fuck am I talking about....yea it had a contract....but you also have more uses out of it since its a phone and not just a media consumption device....
@Guess Who
It's probably because it wil cost you 6-700$ upfront... do you see the point?
Add the voice and data plan and probably you are paying fair in comparison with any other device with same functionality.
If you don't like operators you could buy the iPod Touch.
The iPhone does not sell more because it is not cheaper, the sky is the limit for that device...
Everybody has to make money, not only Apple holds that right
That is a lot of sheep that have been owned :D
Cool, I'm not sure I want to keep mine...
Used one in an apple store, and realised why this thing is so popular, it's just beautiful to use. Majorly tempted to take one back with me to the UK!
I would really like to have a 64GB 3G version, but I don't have 3G coverage in my area :( I may end up getting one used in a few months off eBay, depends how cheap I can get it
Wow you Apple trolls really think everything that Apple say is true. What a bunch of mugs lol. You do realise this includes product sold to 3rd parts that is still sitting on shelfs!! What a bunch of morons LMFAO. By the way the Ipad was the first thing i ever purchased that was made by Apple and boy what a let down. I dont understand what you fanboys get all excited about. It was a POS.
@Apple patent troll
So how many third party sellers have tons of these just sitting around collecting dust? I'm betting it's not many.
@Apple patent troll
Reading your comment I'd say you calling anyone else a moron is quite the glass house / stone situation.
What should have been mentioned in the same story is the sharp drop off of access to websites reported by the iPad. It looks like a lot of people who bought the iPad use it for the first couple of weeks and than it starts to collect dust. But at the same time iPhone and iPod access has increased. Maybe the iPad is to big and people go back to a smaller size to surf the web.
@SSD
Got a link to this info? Very interested...
@SSD Got any figures or links to back up that statement?
@SSD Big deal. It's the same with every device you buy. You play with it more in the beginning, then you just use it.
@SSD http://www.netmarketshare.com
@SSD Here's the actual graphical data from your link, which shows use going up and to the right consistently since launch...

How do the bullet wounds in both feet feel?
@SSD That website shows increasing share. It goes up on weekends, back down again on weekdays, but each peak is higher than the last peak, and each trough is also higher than the last trough, and it's up to 0.09% on the 1st of May... unless I'm looking at the wrong chart?
@Peter Cat, its not in relation to the units sold. Usage should have gone up more than what's reported.
