Nintendo Wii goes ebony and ivory on May 9, includes Sports Resort and Motion Plus
Nintendo's Wii has been available in black overseas for quite some time now, and while there were ways to get one in North America, those ways weren't exactly cheap -- nor legitimate. Now Ninty is finally giving us a color option, releasing a black Wii to American consumers for $199.99 on May 9. In other news, you'll have a copy of Wii Sports Resort included and a MotionPlus adapter to match, along with the controller and nunchuck that were previously included. In fact that looks to be the standard bundle going forward on the white models as well, which equates to something of a soft price drop assuming new Wii owners were going to buy Wii Sports Resort. And of course they were, because who can resist bopping their friends over the head with pretend wooden swords?
Nintendo to Include Wii Sports Resort, Wii MotionPlus with All New Wii Systems
Starting May 9, Wii Hardware Will Be Available in Black or White
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A great value in video games is about to get even better. Starting May 9, Nintendo will add new elements to the baseline Wii™ system package offered at retailers throughout the Americas. In addition to the intuitive, motion-sensing Wii Remote™ controller, Nunchuk™ controller and popular Wii Sports™ game that currently comes standard with each system purchase, every new unit will now also come packaged with Wii Sports Resort™ and the control-enhancing Wii MotionPlus™ accessory. In addition, consumers will be able to choose between two color schemes for the Wii console and included controllers: original white, or a new black option. The U.S. suggested retail price of the new system package will remain at $199.99. Pricing outside the United States will be established by the local markets, but offer similar consumer value.
"Nintendo leads the way in delivering rich motion-control gaming experiences at an accessible price point," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "By including even more of our top-quality hardware and software in the basic Wii system package, we're extending that commitment to entertainment and value. Now more than ever, consumers can count on Nintendo to deliver inclusive fun and advanced motion controls at a mass-market price."
Wii Sports Resort expands on the active-play fun of the original Wii Sports, with resort-themed activities such as wakeboarding, archery and swordplay. What's more, Wii Sports Resort features the rich control enhancements of Wii MotionPlus, which allows users to dive in and enjoy precision motion-control excitement right out of the box.
Wii MotionPlus has set the standard in precision motion control by delivering an immersive, social experience unavailable on any other system. As of May 9, when both the Wii Sports Resort game and a Wii MotionPlus accessory will come standard with every new Wii console, people who purchase the system can experience this leading-edge video game technology from the moment they plug in and power up.
Previously unavailable throughout the Americas, the black version of the Wii console will offer all the groundbreaking features and functions of its white counterpart in a stylish new color scheme. Whether they aim to color-coordinate with other devices or simply love the way it looks, consumers throughout the Americas can add a black Wii console with matching black Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to their home entertainment lineup. Additional black controllers and accessories can be purchased separately.
The Wii system launched in November 2006 and continues to attract millions of new and experienced gamers with its intuitive motion-sensing controls and inclusive game offerings.

sweet Wii!!! I'd tap that.
@dserranojr
You'd "tap" that? Yours is small enough to fit in that slot?
@dserranojr
the wii sucks- but it sucks less in black! :)
@Smart People Play Tuba
ouch :(
On a different note, where's the video of Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo (as Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra, respectively) singing "Ebony and Ivory?"
"Song the Young People Will Enjoy"
@Smart People Play Tuba that wii controller holder is fairly big... go hold a wii controller
@big nazty
Unfortunately, he was going to use the SD slot
@dserranojr
How is this breaking new Nintendo has always released a set of colors per region but good job for Nintendo I though i was going to have to spray paint my wii
@Smart People Play Tuba
We need the true Ebony and Ivory. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in "White Men Can't Jump" lol. saw that last night.
@dserranojr if that looks a little bit too dark, we can have an alternative that shines so bright. Wii gold. http://j.mp/cLAxRj
Cue Lord Vader's comments . . .
@Smart People Play Tuba
"Welcome, to the darkside..."
@Smart People Play Tuba
He's too busy in therapy.
a lil bit 2 late for changing colors...imo
@nk You would think that... but just wait and see. Nintendo fans love getting the same system they've had for 4 years in a brand new color and NOTHING new.
Please see: Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Advance, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance SP, DS, DS lite...
They should've always sold it in black.
@Stevenk nintendo revolution!!! It was black back in 05
@Stevenk nintendo revolution!!! It was black back in 05
Nice to see that America is 6 months behind the rest of the world for a change
@Marklitt
Bit odd, didn't realise myself, it's been out in oz for a bit now. N Dropped the retail price last week also, punching for a fatality move this round I guess.
@Cy Starkman
Yeah, I saw an advert online for the black one plus two free games for £99 the other day - so aside from America getting it last, they're finally paying a higher price for something too :o
nintendo practically promised multi colour games consoles way back during some long distant e3 conference.
for the record, the xbox 360 has more colours available (including special editions). and nintendo are supposed to be the kings of multi coloured wares.
@Wiggy Fuzz
Seems long forgotten that fact eh? Also they said no more accessories after the motion plus and yet we await the relaxotron or whatever it's called.
Engadget broke the story before Joystiq. XD
Ah, a new color. That'll get them running to the shops!
I don't remember the SNES ever needing a new color. Then again, it seemed to change colors by itself over the years.
@TheAmazingWJV
+1
@TheAmazingWJV
That was one of its best quirks! No other system can replicate that 18 year old technology!!! It's unbelievable.
Where was this when I bought my Wii?
@Astrodroid
Uh, in the future?
@Wesscoast Whoa the future?!?!?!?
the title should be ebony OR ivory. I thought a black and white wii had been announced...
@Spaceshipped I've added a little something to the post above that explains the reference.
@TimStevens
fair enough, Tim.
I was really close to buying a Wii two weeks ago, im glad i didnt. This things looks way to sexy =D
I remember buying Wii sports resort when it was released. What a dissapointment, nowhere near as fun as the original wii sports, it's honestly the only game I play on the Wii and it's only fun with a group of people.
Is the MotionPlus attachment black as well, or is it still white?
@JackNapier It's black, but you won't see it unless you take it out of the rubber case. The case is not translucent like with the white controllers.
I like the white better. The black looks mean, but nintendo wii is not mean, it's sweet and innocent. White suits it better..
@arjaan
Well black works out perfect then, I don't want my friends too look at it and start laughing at its innocence, I want them to look at it and say damn that's sexy =P
@SiRMuP I rather have that my friends look at me an say that. Girlfriends that is...
I got mine a few weeks ago for free with my htc desire and a subscription with vodafone. The desire is not locked to a certain provider, so I could choose from 5 providers. Most of the time I'm jealous at you people in the new world, getting all the gadgets earlier, but this time I wasn't..
Ugh. I just ordered the white Wii last week and am waiting on shipment. Good thing the Motion Plus is only going to be useful for the new Zelda game, so I won't mind shelling out for it when I NEED it.. Black is pretty sexy though.
Buyer's remorse is only about 4/10. :)
w00t. This is what I've been waiting for. Finally :)
Well I'll stick with my Japanese Wii with Homebrew Channel since currently the Wii makes a better non HD media hub then game console
that's my birthday
The black wii has been out here in hong kong since 2008..
@thestimp
That may be true (And it is), but hey, at least it's out in the US now too. Exposure is a good thing, y'know? :P
What's next?
Gold?
Oh wait...
http://www.wiids.co.uk/2009/12/17/22ct-gold-wii-for-29999500/
Is not Ebony a dark wooden brown? Good effort o'll chap, much effort indeed.
I always said I would wait until the black one came out. I can finally put 3 years of waiting to rest.
Gotta love how Nintendo milks the Wii. When they were selling good, only white Wiis. When the sales are down, the spray paint Wiis start getting pushed out.
We know pretty soon the Wiis heading for $149 blow out sales soon just like the Gamecube, it's a good business model.
Because we know all them Nintendo Nerds needs mawr Wiis of every color to collect.
