We've just heard from the boys and girls at RIM that the company did, in fact, deploy the long-awaited
two-way Gmail synchronization capability to North American BIS users this week. What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that if you've got a BlackBerry on any North American carrier that isn't going through BES, Gmail should behave more like it should -- deleted items will disappear from your phone, emails read elsewhere will show up as read on the device, and you'll have access to all of your sent items. Oh, and you can create and delete labels from the comfort of your QWERTY thumb board, too, which is a sweet deal. Sure, the feature might be literally years late as far as we're concerned -- but hey, better late than never.
Awesome!
@tayklor my one wish is somehow a partnership between Google talk and BBM... I miss talking to my old buddies
OK How do I view all my sent items as the article says I can?
One more reason that blackberry sucks. How late are they on this? IMAP isn't a "feature", it's common sense. Is a smart phone really smart without access to you email? It's pretty stupid.
Pawsome!
Working for me too... I think I'm speaking for everyone out there when I say "FINALLY!!!"
This is the least of what rim needed to do in order to stay competitive. Talking about personal e-mail in leading devices, RIM had/has the worst solution for someone who's bread and butter is e-mail.
@CannedCorn did you have to do anything to get it to work? i have a bberry bold 9000 with the enhanced gmail plug in and it does not recognize on my phone that i have read a message on the gmail website
@sidestep Yeah, you have to delete you account(mailbox) and re-add it.
It takes a while to sync read/unread status, but it works (Thank GOD!) So be patient.
@CannedCorn thanks- it worked without deleting - just like you said took a bit
@sidestep Yeah you would have to delete and re-add if it was added a long time ago, but I think you are ok if you did that after they added contact sync. Something about how the mailbox gets configured initially.
Sure- but when Apple is "late" for a feature, they get slammed by every Tom, Dick, and Larry... Guess I should expect that tho from M$/Google/Android fanbois.
@think before you react
I think that proper email workings for Gmail is slightly different than not having a feature like MMS in 2008/09.
@Waltah wrong, see: IMAP
This has been around since before unix admins had beards (including gmail's support for it)
@Waltah
True- it is different. It's EASIER than implimenting MMS. Thanks for pointing that out!
@think before you react
Gmail is generally used by techies while most people have hotmail, yahoo, comcast, verizon and the like. The sales of Android devices are certainly helping to expand the usage.
MMS was avail on the most basics of phones, even those without cameras. There's a difference.
better late than never indeed.
That only took ages, but at least it's here.
Well sounds like a needed update. But what is BES?
@Smarty2600 http://crackberry.com/blackberry-enterprise-server-bes-what-it
@webmastir
Thanks for link.
On VZW in Boston, I'm seeing massive lag time when the BB syncs read/delete status from gmail.com. Anyone else?
@MrCrowley It takes a while, but also, this might be because you are part of the "sleeveless masses" that think verizon is better than everything because all of their Jaeger bombing friends have droids.
/END VZW hate
too little too late rim. my ass is going Android ASAP.
Gmail sucks...
@rviqueira lol. you must be a hotmail user. noob.
@webmastir Microsoft's where it's at... I host my own exchange/BESx so no hotmail for me either.
@rviqueira *sigh*
Welcome to 2010 Blackberry users !!!
@sycamore714
....or 2009 even....
Two-way huh...kind of like the ending scene of Requiem for a Dream?
@DoctarPeppar ASS to ASS!
@therodt
MMM Jennifer connoly.
Likely late because RIM was focused on fine-tuning its business user customer base.
I'm not using a BlackBerry currently, but I do miss my old Tour. That keyboard was oh-so satisfying.
Funny, Just last week I bought the Droid Incredible because I couldn't stand the horrid email support for Gmail on my BB Tour. haha That's ironic. Just 1 week too late.
@pauldovi don't worry. I just switched my sim to my bb9000 and the gmail plug in sucks compared to true gmail on my Nexus. No comparison at all. For one it takes forever to sync compared to immediately on android :-)
Now if only BBM would work on other platforms, then I wouldn't feel so bad about leaving AssCrackBerry behind for my future EVO. Oh well. gTalk it is.
And that's the ONLY thing I will miss about having a Blackberry...and having to pop out the battery at least once a day. :\
And it still doesn't work on Verizon.
@slinky317 it does ... it's just pretty delayed
@slinky317 It does work on VZW...just takes on the order of *hours* for read/delete to sync from gmail.com to the BB.
@MrCrowley Wow, hours? That's pretty ridiculous. I'll test it and see how long it takes to work. You don't have to have the Enhanced Gmail Plugin installed, do you?
@slinky317 Works fine for me on Verizon, not instant, but relatively quick (10 minutes tops?) It started doing it a few days ago. I was shocked.
Please RIM release this to europe ASAP.
Good Job.
im on at&t and it's either still not working/severely delayed
@dannyry ok now it created duplicates of the ones i read on gmail site and tagged one copy as read and the other as unread on the phone...i guess there are still some kinks to be worked otu
Only if you have a data plan though.
blackberrys suck
Welcome to the game failberry!
Seriously, aren't BlackBerry's supposed to be known for excellent e-mail support? How do they fail at something sooo basic that every other smartphone has done since basically forever?
@Luxury Guy
It's why many of us left to android and why many more are leaving. Don't feel sorry for rim tho, they don't care. They only care about corporate users. Screw the consumer that kept them alive four years ago when they released the bb8100.
Nice!... i think? when is Europe up for this?
