From the moment we saw the so-called "magical device," we knew the lucrative
digital cookbook market would never be quite the same, but it's one thing to imagine an
iPad as the centerpiece of one's kitchen, and something else entirely to see to see it in the flesh.
TUAW reader Alan Daly built his directly into the side of a kitchen cabinet, and set it to work doling out Epicurious recipes, streaming Jamie Oliver, and surfing some of the world's best websites (in our oh-so-humble opinion) well out of the way of troublesome meat splatter. In lieu of flying toasters, his screen displays a virtual aquarium when it's not in use, and the whole assembly seems to be a simple matter of cutting a hole and affixing a pair of wooden strips for support. It's not clear, however, how he keeps it charged. Maybe that's the magic Steve keeps talking about. Video after the break.
I bet he has a 3 sided slider mount on the back of the door, so he can removed the iPad, and it's portable again. That 's the reason for the halfmoon cutout on the right.
@joelaf
Halfmoon is for the button on the bottom.
Good Idea and very creative.
@kabloink
Bill Gates has one of those - but its mounted at the bottom of the bowl.
@bjsguess
They historically have also been worthless. Why would anyone want a laggy slow netbook-touchscreen mounted like this??
-mounts netbook-tablet in cabinet-
-boot's windows 7-
*waits for windows to boot*
-opens firefox-
"This is cool! Interwebs in meh cabinet!"
-try's to think of something else to do with it-
-walks away-
It would have been better if u pressed a button and it raised out of the countertop it
@loox42
I don't know about you, but I don't know a single person that has an Android phone right now. Nearly every single one of my friends has an iPhone, and if they don't they want one. Face it, techies know about the Android phones, but other than us, they really aren't that big of a deal... Who knows if they'll catch on like the iPhone did. I remember there was as much hype about the Android as there was about the Pre, and look what happened to that. The only Android phone that is a true competitor to the iPhone would have to be the HTC EVO 4G. All of this is just meh opinion......
There's a hole in his cabinet!
Why not just put wall mounts in different rooms around the house so you can pickup and go? Why create a huge ugly hole in his cabinet??? Especially when apple releases new versions every year, it may work now, but not in 2 years. When you go and sell the house in 5 years buyers will be like iPad 1.0 compatible??? f-that!, it won't support go go gadget chatting!
Super you can watch TV in the kitchen and see apple ads so that you can be told to go buy more apple products. F***ing sheep.
@Robert Jordan
really? lol
Nifty :) A bit much? sure, but still nifty! haha.
I would take one of i could
Articles like this and the follow up responses convince me the world has gone mad. This is sexy? This has utility?
Could they not have built the Ipad with a kickstand making it just as useful but also portable?
The cult of Apple has lost all reason.
@Prestor John
Still hoping for your beloved Courier. Hold your breath until it's in your hands. I'm sure Microsoft will be resurrecting it soon, just for you.
@MosesusedaniPad
The courier has (had?) a kickstand?
Thank you for proving my point, by the way. When it comes to apple you enter a logic-free zone.
The IPAD needs a kickstand. Of course, third parties couldn't charge $100 for novelty kickstands then.
I use a ipod touch in my kitchen, works just as well and is 5 times cheaper.
@bjsguess Umm...its apple duh, need more of an explanation?
when i saw the url for this, i thought that the title would end with '...sacrificing portability for utter ridiculousness". i am disappointed.
That's one expensive digital photo frame :O
No I'm not buying this one little bit.
Maybe if they put it in the toilet, I could find a use for it.
Now if only Hulu was included in the demo... sigh.
@Kevin6432 Or you can stream all your media via media connect, control x10 lighting systems throughout the house, push media to the home's central AV system, check the weather, check daily calendar for family members, use Onenote to categorize/look up recipes, order a Safeway delivery for the ingredients you don't have.
There's a surprising amount of useful/entertaining things you can do with a Windows based kitchen touchscreen device. I know my wife would kill for me to install one.
Now this, has potential. I'd add a knob matching button rather than that cut out. I may just get a second iPad and do this.
awful kitchen...
GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC! ;-)
forget the AUX plug. I would use ipod speakers and an ipod connector extension plug. that way, the ipad could charge at the same time.
How long before cupertino sends the iGoons through this guys door and slaps a cease-and-desist on his ass for infringing on their coming iCabinet dongle?
I dont know how the thick the cabinet doors are, but how does he charge the iPad?
I want to go to there..
Perhaps my idea of the iPad as a fridge magnet might enhance this? ... http://blog.davidjeade.com/2010/02/on-the-ipad-the-ultimate-fridge-magnet/
If they were flatter/thinner, you could use them as interactive dinner settings (at some posh bistro) and order food from your table.
Then play games while waiting for food/drinks to arrive, like those old Galaga videogame tables. Maybe text the cute girl sitting at the bar, via some form of geolocating app. Play networked trivia?
iPad compatible furniture. In stores near you!
Very nice. The video also illustrates how fast the iPad is.
I'm going to buy a new bicycle, instead.
How do you update it? (ios4)
I just installed brand new kitchen cabinets using kitchen cabinet kits sold by http://www.kitchencabinetdepot.com. The kits sold by KitchenCabinetDepot make putting together the cabinets fun and easy. I love my new cabinets but after reading this article I am thinking about installing my iPad into one of my cabinets. Not only can I get instant information from it, having an iPad in one my cabinets will look really cool.
