iPhone OS 4 beta 3 brings iPod widgets to the dock

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

@dcoaster YES thank you thats what i said to myself. Apple blatantly stole this from palm
@jellotime91 The functionality was publicly displayed on January 8th, 2009. By my calculations, that's almost 1 and a half years. Try again.
Doubt that rotation lock, swipe controls and the wallpaper will make it into the 3G, swipe ipod no use since 3G still has double tap ipod controls, but orientation lock? hmmm, strange
Not that it matters to anyone here, but isn't the iphone OS beta's covered by an NDA?
I don't think this is widgets as we've known them for sometime now. I would like a calendar widget on one of the 11 pages the iPhone has....is the possible Apple?
Is that a Gmail app on the dock? ;)
@Melvin
Nah...you can do that now. Just go to the gmail homepage through safari and then save the bookmark to the homescreens.
@Melvin Nah, just the gmail web app.
It's a start, but it needs more work.
all I can say is bravo for choosing a Clash song for the screen cap. Love your style!
@tlanz AGREED! The first thing I noticed was that someone has excellent taste in music. :)
FINALLY
iOS approaching widgets
Ok im not trying to hate but this copies WebOS's UI for the media player and pandora. Apple get creative and stop stealing ideas
iPhones are the best. They have the best touch screens, user friendly, and millions of apps. There's even an app that starts ur car. Android is overrated. I'm not an apple fan boy. I fix computers & they are PCs!!!!!
Why not improve the os on my classic? Coverflow sucks ass.
Weird, i tried to download it again so i could install it to my old iPhone but all thats up for download is Beta 2....Beta 3 was up earlier...
If you have the battery percentage on, the new version of the OS turns it off if you have too many menu items on. (location, orientation lock, alarm, play, bluetooth)

People keep talking about the iPod controls, but the major win here is the orientation lock. Finally, I can read an email while laying down. Yay!
@dorothymantooth With you on that one
Putting the iPod controls and orientation lock there is such poor design. I'm really shocked to see they did that, it makes no sense for those buttons to be there. They need to come up with something else. Like have the application switcher at the bottom, and the iPod controls at the top of the screen, not mix them.
As much as I like Apple and the iPhone and I also like some of the new features that they are adding in the new 4.0 update, it just seems like Apple are plonking them on top of the current UI, they don't seem to be implementing them well at all and I am actually quite surprised by this
Couldn't have imagined a better place to put that orientation lock.
Its back up
/chuckle
Stealing ideas from Android.
Oh, how the tables have turned :)
Don't know if its just me, but I think the way new features are implemented look very patchy and shabby.
I know it is a beta release, but I was expecting a better and elegant interface from Apple. You know... that's what they are know for anyway.
Hope this gets a fix before the release because it looks so cheap =(
The lock orientation feature is long awaited. There are plenty of times when I have to put my Touch sideways, but I don't want cover-flow. The only question is, can it do shuffle-by-album now? I mean why is the supposedly "best" iPod cannot do what a regular iPod/nano have been able to do for years?
You know... they keep adding features, and it keeps getting more obscure and confusing, as opposed to webOS that just started out with all those things in mind, and designed it into the core.
It's the problem when you design something with an idea in mind, and you start making amendments.
Does anyone else think that the iphone os's main feature is its simplicity. With this new update I think they're adding too much.
why is every second engadget story have to end up being an apple vs android fanboy flamewar ?
just checked my dev account at apple, iPhone SDK 4 beta 3 is back out again...
Dear Apple,
Please fix the "download remaining xxx KB" button at the bottom of big emails to not cause the screen to jump back to the beginning of the email. It should stay where you left off. Makes it a pain in the ass to scroll all the way back down and try to find where you left off.
I'm a believer you guys are genius', but how it works now is rather dopey.
