With the
HTC EVO dual-mode 3G/4G handset launching this summer (and
nearly ready for pre-order) with built-in hotspot capability, we've got a pretty good idea what all you US Americans are wondering: is WiMAX available in my city? Well, buried inside the
Clearwire financials is mention of the 19 additional cities scheduled for WiMAXing this summer, joining the 32 markets (pictured above) and 41 million people already served by its 4G network offering 3Mbps to 6Mbps average downloads with an occasional 10Mbps peak:
Clearwire also today announced plans to launch 4G mobile broadband service in 19 additional cities this summer, including previously announced markets Kansas City, KS; St. Louis, MO; Salt Lake City, UT, and the core area of Washington, D.C. and newly announced markets Nashville, TN; Daytona, Orlando and Tampa, FL; Rochester and Syracuse, NY; Merced, Modesto, Stockton, and Visalia, CA; Wilmington, DE; Grand Rapids, MI; Eugene, OR; and Yakima and Tri-Cities, WA.
Things will get really interesting later in 2010 when Clearwire and Sprint take their 4G mobile broadband network to New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, the San Francisco Bay Area, Miami, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh for a 120 million person strong data footprint.
LTE who?
FINALLY PITTSBURGH!! *smiles*
Good when my ravens come to town in week four my evo will still work
@Mekkakat
Even though it hasn't been officially launched or announced for Pittsburgh, I am sure it's currently under "testing". They haven't officially launched DC yet though I was there 2 months ago and go 4G reception on my Sprint Overdrive. So even if Pittsburgh won't get it to say...Winter of 2010, you can potentially get the HTC EVO 4G and pull in 4G speeds.
Good when my ravens come to town in week four my evo will still work
The only thing that keeps Jobs awake at night; Android.
Cannot wait for the HTC Evo 4G, a.k.a iPhone killer.
Yes this phone will be the BEST when it comes out, but please stop the iPhone killer garbage.
@Jean Marc I agree. Let the phone be what it is and don't worry about "killing" other products.
On the same note: My EVO (when I get it) will be SO beastly here :D
@FrankTheCrank Another one? Ten iPhone killer failures a quarter isn't enough? The only phone that could possibly do it are the W7M phones this winter. Android is too fragmented.
@ bullshit You sir are a loser stick to your Apple post and stop trolling
WTF Texas? Sheesh.
@Chi I was at Dulles last May and got 4G service in the airport on my laptop with an Intel 5350 card. In Waltham, MA last March I pulled down 500K/s using XOHM in the Boston area. These networks have been up and accessible for over a year but for whatever reason Clear has been slow to convert the old XOHM markets and relaunch them as Clear.
kinda sucks that it doesnt cover the third largest business district in L.A.
C'mon sprint we need 4g in cali, we just cant afford it yet :(
@Chi
Yep, a lot of times you can get a signal in cities that aren't currently live. Essentially they've got the coverage towers up & are working through the grid to find pockets of problem reception areas or deadzones.
I know people in Chicago that were able to pick up a signal at least a year before it went live. My guess was it took much longer to check & fix problem spots due to the city & tons of skyscrapers- which would make sense why NYC is taking longer & LA, but for different reasons- square milege & topography!
Hopefully the delays have been worth it & there won't be spotty coverage in the new markets. Word of mouth if it's bad could really kill their opportunity to gain a solid market share & user base.
@viper24 Come on, we love our ol' inernet round her' too!
@FrankTheCrank
The only thing that keeps Steve Jobs up at night is the stupid glare from the IPS screen on his bedside Ipad. (Which he hasn't found any use for yet, other than an alarm clock)
@lv2bll54
I do not like the big gaps in the west coast. No 4G in Tucson?
@Mekkakat Sweet, I think wimax is the future as well. Review. http://bit.ly/wimax-moto-ripped
@FrankTheCrank naw dont say iphone killer because with this phone ... the iphone dont exist
:-( No dots over Florida. :-(
@Ryan Trevisol
"Clearwire also today announced plans to launch 4G mobile broadband service in... Orlando and Tampa, FL"
no worries, its coming =)
@skyblaze Not to Miami/Fort Lauderdale . . . Still :-(
@Ryan Trevisol

=]
@Ryan Trevisol - Or Iowa. Need 4G in Des Moines so I can ditch Mediacomm once and for all!!!
@Brokinarrow Or Lincoln, NE. We have more people than Des Moines. :P
Still not in D.C. :(
@Stevenk
I was in DC over 2 months ago and pulled in 4G reception from my Sprint Overdrive. Even though it's not officially announced or launched for DC, it's obviously being tested there. So yes, there is 4G reception there.
I live in md right between dc and Baltimore and I pull 4g up and down 95 its wonderful
@Stevenk Towers have been up and operational in a lot of places in the DC area for over a year. You just have to have an account (with XOHM last year, now with Clear).
Why is there coverage in Idaho and not in Florida or DC?
@Stevenk
"..........is mention of the 19 additional cities scheduled for WiMAXing this summer, joining the 32 markets (pictured above)."
Jeez, you spend more time making comments like you would your Twitter feed than reading the article. lol
@people reading the map The map shows the current markets covered by Clear. The upcoming markets will include some 4G love in DC and the evergreen state.
@Stevenk I live in md I can tell you that I pull 4g in dc, no idea bout Florida though.
What does that translate to in actual Sprint customers?
@Scrtcwlvl If they can advertise being the only 4G network to half the US population ... It's gonna mean a buttload of customers
@Scrtcwlvl
42
Carrier: Sprint
4G City: Seattle
Looks like I know what my next phone is gonna be! ;)
@element4life3
lucky dog.
@element4life3 Looks like you live in Seattle ;)
@element4life3
Yeah!
@weekender Yes sir I do! Now Sprint, give us a release date on this phone dammit!
That map looks as though it includes Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro N.C. but I can't find them listed on the site. What's the deal?
@JeremytheIndian Check http://www.clear.com/imap which does list Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte,Greensboro, Winston-Salem, etc.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!! Wilmington, DE!!!! Finally something exciting happening in Delaware lol. I wonder if Sprint is gonna charge more for 4G service or if they are gonna keep it in that $69.99 a month deal they have going on right now. I hope so.
@Darkblade only tethering will cost more 4g on the phone is in the plan price
Not even close.
Hmm 4G near Idaho? That means 4g to Salt Lake City is coming soon... Sprint here i come
Finally coming to my hometown!
Too bad I've been using them at school, only to realize that they suck. If your service is going to cut out frequently, you really need 24 hour tech support.
True story: during one call (of dozens), I asked them how to report a service outage outside of call center hours. They recommended the 24 hour web chat. They honestly didn't know why I started laughing pretty hard when they said that.
I'm still trying to figure out how Clearwire's thought process works... Never mind, just come to Indy.
Just to clear things up, if a city is on the "coming soon" list for 4G reception, that does not mean you won't get 4G reception when you're in that city now. Every city goes through it's own "testing phase" and it's open to all - that's if you have a 4G enabled device. I've been to several cities that are on the "coming soon" list (ie, Washington DC) and I was able to pull in 4G reception on my Sprint Overdrive. So even if you get your HTC EVO 4G and you live in one of these coming soon cities, you may potentially be able to get 4G reception.
My estimate is that for any city that has a set launch date, you can bet there is at least a 4 to 5 month test phase. DC is not supposed to get WiMax till Summer I believe but I was able to pull in 4G reception as early as early March of this year.
@Chi Even better for the old XOHM cities, service has been up for over a year and anyone could get it if they had a device.
