SlingPlayer Mobile for Android goes to private beta?
Android's quickly becoming the elephant in the room for Sling Media, so we're delighted to hear today that the promised Android client of SlingPlayer Mobile is apparently entering a private beta period as we speak -- according to a tipster over at Phandroid, anyhow. It seems that some members that signed up to Sling's beta program have been contacted recently with a link to the download and a request that they not discuss the app or the beta program (so much for that), so if everything goes really, really well, we might see a release before too long. The thought of this thing running on the EVO 4G just blows minds, doesn't it?

I'd rather see it running on my iPad with a decent resolution...but android support is welcome too. Took them more than 2 years.
@DoctarPeppar
I'd rather see a video of an iPad getting smashed streaming from my SlingBox to my SlingPlayer Mobile app on my Windows Mobile device.
It's hard to get excited about the SlingPlayer app running on the Sprint 4G network when Time Warner Cable is still serving me up an overpriced RoadRunner Turbo experience with a 1Mbps upload speed.
@DoctarPeppar Yes! Loving the idea of this running on my future Evo and my iPad tethered through my Evo!
@DaveBach
I haven't tried to use slingplayer on the HD2, but I have used it on the touch pro 2 and the omnia 2 -- and it's slow as balls, even with a custom rom. It's nothing like the iphone \ ipad version, which is very responsive and fast...the problem is the resolution and stream quality.
As for your ISP -- that sucks...I have FIOS and 20mbps uploads :P
I seed torrents all day, probably do about 10 gigs uploaded every 24 hours, have been for years...FIOS is the best ISP, period.
@DaveBach Youre an idiot. Not even worth elaborating on.
Anyway, I agree with doctar peppar. iPad support would be much appreciated.
Unfortunately, we're talking about sling here. Which means a few years from now we might see this android release hit retail and THEN they might start looking into this iPad thing they keep hearing about.
@toptekjon
Yeah, it's pretty sad. Sling is just nothing but failure all around.
They first mentioned Android support in 2008, and it took them until 2010 to get a private beta.
They also said that there would be a Sling player for WebOS last year at the pre's launch (Palm said this also, Sling was on their "premier app partner" list), and that has yet to be released as well.
Combine that with no symbian player that works on s60v5 (^1), and probably no symbian player that will run on the N8 when that comes out either, shotty mac support, and the fact that they now charge 30$ for tech support make this company one of the worst I've ever seen when it comes to support.
@DaveBach where do you live @ i have road runner turbo and my upload speed is around 400kbps 1mb upload sounds alot better
Will it only be available for 2.0 and 2.1 ?
ah, Professor Geller. It's been a while. Still rollerblading to work?
I find this to be most excellent news!
Pffft...
Pfffttt...
@SteveAlmighty
I apologize for the double post
@SteveAlmighty
Oh, it's ok Mr. Jobs. Pretty sure they're both headed to oblivion anyways.
(No offense. Just this magical revolutionary feeling i have.)
If that behold 2 is stock then it seems like this will be compatible with 1.5 roms as well (even if it has a hacked rom only 1.6 is working right now on behold 2 unless they got some super secret 2.1 rom)
I wish there was more of a user community for slingbox...there's like no hacks at all and there's not even an sdk or anything public regarding their streaming protocol, etc..no custom firmware...:|
Nice for all those slingplayer users
That's Ross from Frieda. Could he be any more annoying.
MythTV users will have something to strive for now.
"The thought of this thing running on the EVO 4G just blows minds, doesn't it?" Not really. For me and for many others, the rate-limiting factor is not the download speed of the mobile device but the upload speed of the Slingplayer. I could care less if I'm getting 5 Mbps down if my upload speed is 10% that.
Damn! Between this, Flash and AIR, SkyFire 2.0 Beta update allowing Hulu to work. Damn this is really the best browsing experience! Oooh wait. I thought that the iPad has the best browsing experience?
@Darkseider
Seriously. Apple calling the iPad the best browsing experience has to be one of the most arrogant trollings I've seen from a company. Sure it's cool and flashy, but it's in no way shape or form "the best way to browse the web". ugh...
@skyblaze but it is truly a magical revolutionary, magnificent experience.
Just kidding it blows. No flash on it kills it. But overall the ipad is a pretty decent gadget to have.
Cant wait to see windows mobile 7 or a more mature android platform.
Android like linux is short of amazing will always fall short to amaze the hardcore GEEKS. Tried to like the damn platform. But it is cheap looking no thought put into its apps.
@FrankDTank I meant will always fall short to amaze the general public but the hardcore geeks will love it. The whole 0.9%.
Android is moving!
I want a DTV tuner in my smartphone.
All the better for use with the Dish Sling loaded DVR!!
Android UI looks outdated.
@thrash1256 you and steve jobs face looks outdated go fix your face and get a new one
@hated one
Well, nobody has a "free" data plan, but once I pay my $15/month for unlimited data, I already get 3G streaming from my slingbox to my Palm. Sucks to be an iphone on AT&T where they don't let you use their wireless network to see the big game while you are out on the road.
I can't wait to see this on my evo 4g!
That pictuce provides a great comparison of some mobile diplays currently on the market, and yes...droid does (fail)
