iPhone 3G gets an Android port to call its own (video)
You'll recall, studious little gremlins that you are, that we recently saw the venerable first-gen iPhone prancing about with an unusual little green droid providing it with operational commands. Well, the coder behind that project, David Wang, has now stepped his game up to the iPhone 3G, which has been outfitted with an almost complete implementation of Android. Audio support is the last missing piece of the puzzle, but the groundwork has been laid and it too should be ready for some unholy Apple plus Google action within the next few days. Downloadable binaries are currently being prepared, so we thought we'd help you fill the time with a video demo of the port, which may be found just past the break.

Steve Jobs say's Take that Google!!....Wait
@BeeDavis
Gotta love those hackers :)
@Pearl Jam
Is he holding the iPhone that's taking the video in a coffee mug?
Props for your ingenuity!
@BeeDavis
I'm loving the fact that nobody wants to do the opposite and try to stick the Apple OS onto an android phone
@Zaeed
That's probably because it wouldn't work. Android is made for all kinds of hardware configurations, while iPhone OS only supports the iDevices. If you would get iPhone OS to boot on an Android phone, most likely half of the phone hardware would not be working because the OS has no drivers.
@BeeDavis
Steve Jobs couldn't care less.
To put Android on an iPhone you have to...
Buy an iPhone!
@supremeMilo Ah, you beat me to it. People are forgetting where Apple makes its money.
@supremeMilo
Or get one second hand..
@(Unverified) It's the same.
@Zaeed
Because....the whole point of having an Android phone is ... you're an Apple hater?
@Atkins
No one forgot about where Apple makes its money.
If people are porting Android to their iPhones Hmm what Marketplace are they downloading from? it doesn't have an "I" infront of it.
@BeeDavis While Apple will probably start to make some serious money from their store in the future, especially from the iAd, for the moment it is probably not that much. Hardware is still where they get the cash.
@BeeDavis
I'd love to see a future build of Android with integrated Flash support ported to the IPhone, just to see if Jobs' claims about Flash-related instability, poor battery life and overall weirdness of Flash technology are true.
@BeeDavis
yeah and that would really stress el jobs eh cause apple makes so much more money from people downloading apps versus buying the iPhone. Not.
@Cy Starkman
You must be crazy and arrogant to think that Apple doesn't look at Advertising and Apps to keep the money flow steady Those $1, $2 $15 heck $30 apps add up really fast. I know multiple iPhone users who have spent more in iTunes than what their phone is worth. ... lmao
And I'm not an iPhone user but I'm sure there's lots of who have as well. There's no other reason to have a catalog of 150,000 + apps in order to get people to buy buy buy..
of course hardware is the cash cow but that was blackberry model as well. When there is no longer a demand of iPhone 3g and 3gs Where do they look? Apps and adv,
@supremeMilo Actually Apple makes most of their money from the appstore.
@BeeDavis Question? Will there be long term support and development for this? I'd be willing to buy a used iPhone and throw Android on it. It's a viable option.
If it can run Android, they blew it!
@supremeMilo
@Atkins
Apple makes it's real money from the Appstore and iTunes, so no you are wrong. Units are sold on contracts/discounted so there is normally a lower ROI when you look at hardware sales.
@BeeDavis Wow you are an idiot. I think u sum it up well by saying you have never used an iPhone. U certainly sound like it.
While apple take a small cut from AppStore sales, the majority of the money goes to developers. The money apple makes from the AppStore pales in comparison to the money made from the hardware.
I don't know why this guy is bothering. In order to do it you are going to have to be a tech geek, and haven't most tech geeks made the switch to android already.
I for one won't bother, while the android os is nice, it's ecosystem and support doesn't compare to apples.
I also don't understand hackers mindset. Computers are supposed to be there to make our lives easier, yet people are still obsessed with tweaking them. Fair enough I could understand that back in the 90s when PCs were new, but now it's just pointless. That us what apple is trying to do, take us a way from the hacking age and give us computers/smartphones that r useful and actually do what they are supposed to do. Yet the geek community take this as some kind of insult!
@sl86
Smh at your ignorance with premature name calling. I agreed with 90% of what you said. I own an iPod touch, I have had an iPhone $50 off Ebay had it like most people are doing now.. Disliked it. Now I have an Incredible. I was voicing My opinion.
All I said is you have to be an idiot to not know Advertising and apps is a revenue stream you cannot deny makes a difference to your overall gross revenue. Please save it for an actual fanboy because I am not one.
@sl86
An insult? No. A fundamental philosophical argument, yes. Apple is closed-source, and very much so. Even their tirade against Flash and Adobe is bizarre, because he is in essence saying use HIS proprietary software, not the other guys. When you think about it like that, it makes his whole argument feel... sleazy. More a sales pitch than an actual concern about the future of the mobile web. But we geeks like hacking things, and Android especially, because we are not at the whim of the manufacturer or carrier to incorporate enhancements. How do you think I have Android 2.1 running beautifully on a myTouch? Use Apple if you don't mind having your technology controlled by one company. I can't. I have to know how something works, and once I've bought something, I should be able to do whatever I want with that device. But yeah, iPhones sure are purrr-ty.
@sl86
so your saying hacking is pointless...? maybe try and tell the jailbreak community that, haha, fail
hacking is what makes electronics fun, come on now. if you don't like it, then don't talk about. at least don't say its pointless....
think of it this way:
if the iphone wasn't jailbroken, who the hell would want the most locked down device ever.
if winmo phones didn't get unlocked, who the hell would want a dead, crappy os
if android phones didn't get rooted......
well you should get my point by now. if you don't like hacking, keep it to your self, because us geeks don't care
@molumen
I was going to ask if you port Android onto an iPhone would you get google navigation free and would flash work? Do you know?
@supremeMilo
Ah but that's where you can be very wrong. It starts with consumers being exposed to Android on iPhone and ends up with those consumers looking for an actual android phone next time around once they realize how easy and functional that OS can be.
I'm an iphone owner and very much would like to try an android system out before I go for the Nexus's and HTC's of this world.
@BeeDavis Ultimately, an Android port to the iPhone is a win for Android. One of Android's original goals was to propagate to as many devices as possible.
Android fanboys should embrace this move.
@BeeDavis GOOOOO CANADA! Cool dude! lets show the states what were up to
@drange
Not really. Part of the installation process is extracting native drivers for use with Android. If someone wanted to port iPhone OS to an Android device, thye'd just have to extract the drivers from that particular phone and port them to iPhone. They're both Linux based right?
@Atkins
It's not the same. If you buy it second hand Apple only get money once.
They then have "mind share" not "market share".
@molumen
+1
Imagie if running Android+full flash had very little effect!
Jobs: "We cannot confirm this case but our stand is not altered"
Adobe: "We just confirmed this case, so what excuse has Apple left besides to ban cross-compatibility"
Well it leads to decreased iAd + AppStore profits!
Go Android!
@Pearl Jam Yep, hackers will save the world. It appears today, the 3GS hack is now available. http://j.mp/android-on-iphone-review
@sl86 You may like being tied to a single company's (perhaps a single man's) beck and call, but I sure as hell don't.
And you don't have the right to say I shouldn't.
Oooohhh sexy!
If they have to port another operating system to it, they failed.

@sshole
The meme...you blew it.
@sshole didn't get the profile until somebody replied. Bravo sir!
@sshole
Hmmm.. I see what you did there.
@sshole
If they have to port another operating system to it,
**Puts On Glasses**
They Blew it!!
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm perplexed at how fanboys of either side will attack this seeing as how it's a hybrid of what they both hate and love... This is the golden child people, embrace it
@MattsZ
The golden child would be iPhone OS on an Android phone, not the other way around. If I want an Android phone, I can buy 10s of different handsets, most of which are much cheaper than an iPhone. If I want iPhone OS, I only have a single choice.
@drange "The golden child would be iPhone OS on an Android phone..."
Oh yes.
@MattsZ
Choice is always good.
@MattsZ
the golden child would be iphone OS running in a virtual machine on an android phone, so you get can pick and choose which app is best no matter the platform.
whatever happened to vmware's project?

Just buy an Incredible or an EVO or any other HTC android phone out there with better hardware, take your pick. What is the point in pretending. Good for you for doing it though.
@TankerZ iPhone still has by far the best touch screen. That's the only reason I can think of...
@Timmmmmm Also the most readable screen in bright conditions and unlike HTC whose screens are plastic and very easily scratchable, the iPhone uses glass and much more scratch proof. Also, the iPhone has a nice clean design and tons of accessories. Both my cars came with pre built iPhone integration.
@jaffreywali My Nexus One has a glass screen...
@Marmite Turkey I didn't realize that. Colleague of mine has one at work and we had conducted an iphone v. Droid v. Nexus One comparison at our office some time back. The Nexus One screen was by far the hardest to read in any bright lit condition. I assumed it was the plastic screen that was causing it. The image had a washed out look compared to the Droid or iphone. Also, the touch screen was not as accurate....otherwise it has excellent build quality. It doesn't have the cheap chrome accents of the iphone (which are very low quality materials) and doesn't have the industrial look and weight of the Droid. I thought the Nexus One was the best 'looking' phone, but it had the worst screen (in terms of actual use) of the three....spec wise it was supposed to be the best. Spec wise the iphone had the worst screen, but it was the most easily readible in all conditions and definitely did the best job with video and pictures.
Of course that was based on an informal test...
@jaffreywali HTC are glass screens, and the EVO is LCD, so it will do well in sunlight. Also the new touch sensors on the incredible and EVO are as accurate as the iPhone now. I like the iPhone but those are invalid arguments until the iPhone 4 brings something new that no one else has. Battery life would be the only thing the iPhone has hardware, and that's mostly due to the lean nature of the operating system. I see no reason to do this except you have an iPhone, and want to dabble in Android for free.
