Nimbus 64: the latest in a long line of gorgeous portable N64 mods
For whatever reason, the last great game console to utilize a cartridge over a disc is finding itself in yet another portable form factor, and of course, the Nimbus 64 has been crafted by one of Ben Heck's most loyal followers. One cndowning is responsible for this beaut, and it's actually his second homemade portable; this particular miniaturized Nintendo 64 uses a custom vacuum formed case, D-pads and control sticks from used Game Cube controllers, a Zenith PS1 display and plenty of nuts and bolts that only the hardcore modders in attendance would understand. Per usual, we'd recommend heading down to the links below for more details and images, the latter of which are likely to make you exceedingly envious of the DIY skills exhibited here.

@skyblaze
whoa, whats with the PS buttons on the back... what kind of shenanigans are they trying to pull??
@skyblaze Z button.
@skyblaze It's a prototype of the new PS64 scheduled for released in Q4 2194. They found it in a bar.

@skyblaze
Nice!! I could totally go for a round of Goldeneye right about now..
@Pickaxe
For a long time my Steam ID was Sega Super Playstation 64 Color Slim
Cool, this looks real 3D. Now, I need to know how to play games :(
Price?
@thisisit
It is is 64 bits, just convert that to your currency and add VAX if applicable.
@thisisit. You want a price? I will pay you many Galactic Credits if you change your avatar. My mechanical eyes can only take so much
@thisisit
ah, thisisit is back!
and just a beautiful as ever i see!
@Lord Vader
next time i'll find some helmet. happy?
@thisisit I agree with Vader. PLEASE CHANGE THAT AVATAR! It's HIDEOUS!
But can it play Crysis64?
this is the best one yet
I think the N64 mods are cool, if only because even the bad ones seem to be a lot more comfortable in your hands than those horrible controllers they had.
@JoshUng i personally thought the n64 controllers are the best on any console, they sit in my hands perfectly, are nice and light (but durable) and the sticks are accurate and don't have a heavy drag to them like ps/xbox etc. Each to their own of cause.
@antantant It wasn't the build so much as the design I hated. There basically was two ways to hold it (with you left hand on the left, or on the center nub) and it basically made part of the controller unusable either way you held it.
@JoshUng I'm pretty sure there was a three handed kid who was like "Yes! Finally, someone was thinking about me!"
Cloud computing! ;)
The future is forsaken.
Looks awesome...
Not sure what the buttons on the back are for, but seems you wouldn't want to set this down and hit them inadvertantly. I'd fit some feet on the backside that were longer than the buttons to avoid that, allow this to be set down.
ahh foresaken 64 many good memories of this game, they really need to bring it back to download on current systems with online multi
Has the world run out of PSone LCD screens yet? I will rue that day, for then all new consoles mods will stop having the circular screen design!
I dunno about that button placement. It looks like playing some Super Smash might feel a little awkward
Hey guys, this is Chris! Thanks so much for your comments! This is the first time I've had comments or made it onto a big site, so this is pretty exciting for me!
I read someone say something about price. I'm not really sure it's for sale just yet, but if someone makes an offer it will get consideration no doubt!
But thanks again so much guys, it means a lot!
@cndowning
keep up the great work! this is awesome stuff!
Is there a Person on this Planet that shares my hate towards the N64?
@daniel7860
Nope.
@daniel7860 Why hate it was a damn good system in it's day and def did somethings better than PS1 excellent example of that is the game in that mod, Foresaken was a fun fast paced game on N64 but when played on PS1 it felt like you were playing it in slow motion and just sucked, it was def more powerful system than PS1 just the cartridges couldnt store as much data as a CD could
@daniel7860
Hate is a very strong word! haha. What do you hate about them so much just out of curiosity?
I. Want. One. Of. These.
(Sorry for the spacing...)
Nintendo, you are missing a huge opportunity here!
Please. Stop this nonsense. Nobody cares about this crap. The second the next PSP gets hacked and can run N64 games better than the N64 could, these things are gonna be even more useless. Hell, you can emulate the N64 on the original PSP already.
@kenny goo
Go for it. No one is stopping you. Just understand that it's not just about a finished product, but it's the build, the fun and the challenge that something like this brings. Apparently you have no real sense of accomplishment in your life do you? Sad....
@kenny goo
You sir are a twat.
You actually think that people make these because they want a portable N64? Hell, even a mobile phone can emulate the N64. I guess you have just never have had they joy of accomplishing anything.
While I'm at it I'll just make a giant collection of paper cups connected by strings so my entire block can talk to each other, totally ignoring the fact that we have, ya know..... *phones*.
In other words, if I spend my time on something, it's gonna be something interesting, or unique, or useful. We've seen a million portable N64 mods. They are all equally useless and unimpressive. No one gives a flying fuck anymore.
Ben Heck makes portable PS3s, this guy made the hundredth portable N64 we've seen in the last five years. Do you see why I don't care? The fact that you try to boil it down to petty insults about how I "don't have a sense of accomplishment" just shows how sad and misguided the two of you are.
@kenny goo
Forgive me, but I really do feel like you are missing the point. Is it something new to everyone, no it isn't. Is it something that is going to change the world for everyone, not at all. You a looking at this on too large of a scale and missing all the benefits that this made on an individual level. This in fact was something new to someone, something someone learned a lot from and something that regardless how useless you think the project was, was actually beneficial in many ways. Your opinion is your own, and is your right and I have no problem for you speaking it. Just don't be ignorant and think everyone thinks as you do and that your opinion is the only one that matters. And brush this off as you might with a smirk and roll of the eyes thinking I'm an idiot, you know people who read this are agreeing more with me than you. Plus, why do you have to act like a kid and be rude? Grow up a bit and take the project for what it is.
@cndowning
Right. Because the fact that this is one of the least viewed and commented on article on Engadget last week has *nothing* to do with how much people actually care.
Great for this guy. I'm sure he enjoyed spending his time making this, but that doesn't mean I, or most of the people on Engadget have to give a shit, because they don't.
@kenny goo
I am this guy just so you know who's parade you're raining down on. And I learned more from this project and general modding by doing it myself and taking a bit of pride in my work then you care to recognize. I didn't ask to be on Engadget, it just happened which I thought was the coolest thing to happen to a brand new modder, one who built everything from the ground up. But you don't see beyond the finished product, nor do you look. I'm very proud of what I did with what I had to work with, and I did expect that once I saw this hit a big stage I'd have people like you to deal with. Which is fine, it reminds me how lucky I am to have an open mind. I'm very happy it even got here to begin with, especially with the fact that as you say, no one cares...well that's where your wrong actually, because someone did care, someone who is a bit more open minded than yourself and saw the work that went into this as recognizable. It's the work, the time, the craftsmanship and the drive that makes it to these sites, not the finished product. And if you don't believe that, you are truly the misled one. So cut me a break and let me enjoy the fact that I accomplished something new for me.
@cndowning
"I'm very proud of what I did with what I had to work with..."
Then you shouldn't care what I think, but apparently you do enough to type out a wall of text to respond to me.
You reek of insecurity. Go enjoy your creation and stop caring about what people like me think if you're so proud of yourself.
Ugh. It's late here, so forgive the grammar in that last sentence.
