Looks like settlement negotiations in the various
Nokia / Apple patent lawsuits aren't going too well -- Espoo's just hit Cupertino with a second federal patent lawsuit, this time alleging the iPad 3G and iPhone infringe five patents related to "enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices." Interestingly, Nokia's filed this one in the Western District of Wisconsin, a so-called "rocket docket" that's well-known for bringing patent cases to settlement or trial in just over a year. That means we could see some real movement in this dispute within our lifetimes, but we're not holding our breath for a definitive conclusion -- by our count, Apple and Nokia now have some
five pending legal actions between them, including one that's been
placed on hold pending an ITC decision. Anyone want to bet how long it takes for Apple to add another countersuit to the mix?
Hmm and now Apple will sue them again?
@MoonWalkerCTE
It's only a matter of time before Apple gets confused and sues itself.
Ha ha ha
@MoonWalkerCTE Come on Nokia get them
@MoonWalkerCTE
Maybe Apple should just pay them a fee for every phone they sell.
/s
If they are legitimate patents then I hope they win, but lets be honest, if something is going to stop the Apple iPhone machine, it isn't gonna be patent lawsuits.
@MoonWalkerCTE
i played the same game in kindergarden
@MoonWalkerCTE What idiot forgot to patent the cellphone!! they could be very rich.
@Twoleaf
Ah... so this was OPK's grand plan for the shareholders!
@who said what Lol.
@MoonWalkerCTE
wow nokia, how about spend more time on making a decent phone rather than suing people. noob sauce
@MoonWalkerCTE
Why don't they just hug it out?
@MoonWalkerCTE
From Steve Jobs:
If they keep complaining about patent infringement, they blew it.

@Billy
Everyone is getting better and better at "blowing"!
Steve... you really know how to set a trend... even the unintended ones!
@Billy You ruined a funny post by posting it twice.
@genomalice If you post twice, you blew it.
@Firesuite
They did not forget to patent it, Nokia did patent GSM & 3G technologies. Its exactly why Apple should pay.
@Billy
to steve jobs:
if you say they blew it, you blew it.
@David Bailey
They offered a FRAND arrangement, Nokia refused, that's half the case against Nokia. The other side is completely BS patents.
I've been following this, the Nokia patents in question are in deed very general, questionable, and in some cases prior art has already been proposed. Apple's counter patents are highly detailed, extremely technical, and are clrealy being violated. yea, apple threw a few fluff patents on top to that may or may not apply and may or may not be upheld, but that's patent negotiation 101 (throw a lot on, negotiate some off, have more left than the other guy that will hold up in court when you're done).
Apple is not a patent troll, its a patent powerhouse, and they have an AMAZING legal team and patent process office. I actually believe handling patents is Apple's single strongest talent aside from genuine ingenuity of new devices and systems.
These new 5 patents are not only relatively weak, several would have applied to the iPhone as well, but were not filed against it, showing clear weaknesses in nokia's understanding of its own patents...
@MoonWalkerCTE How do you like THEM Apples?!
@BlueSpud45
I deleted all my cookies so i re-logged in just to do this bro:
hahhalajajajjajjjaa lmfaoooooooo you made my morning.
@BlueSpud45 +1 for the best laugh i have had in a long time
@zelannii Don't be daft.Did you read the content of the patents regarding the lawsuit against HTC? Those are just as general and ridiculous as the ones Nokia is basing their lawsuit on.For crying out loud : they patented the unlock button ("slide to unlock" ) on the Iphone, how much more ridiculous do you want it to be ?
The entire way those patents are used is ridicolous in the extreme. The way it works now is making it impossible for any company to innovate without having some moron slap them with a patent lawsuit.
@filjosh
Any fool couldve seen this coming, anytime a company is doing great financially, they'll get sued by every Tom Dick and Harry just to get a piece of the (Apple) pie, this has happened for decades and will continue to happen. Nobodys gonna sue a company that's not making money because it'll be less money for them. Just stating the cold hard facts.
@BlueSpud45
For infringing a billion patents covering everything from hardware, through software to design, on all products made by "both" companies.
Things could really get Pear shaped.
@rik66 Actually I have read the lawsuit and the patents are very specific in regards to OSX and language interpretation. I don't think you really understand what Apple is suing over.
@Firesuite
I think someone actually managed to get a patent on something that sounded alot like a smartphone last year or something like that.
@Firesuite
I think someone actually managed to get a patent on something that sounded alot like a smartphone last year.
@Firesuite
Actually, that's owned by Motorola...which is why there are no lawsuits against Moto in the mobile world...
@MoonWalkerCTE Apple has a corporate responsibility to respond as strongly to this challenge as possible. If there is grounds for a counter-suit, then Apple will definitely file one.
Such action is not about Apple Legal being a bunch of dicks, it's about the law.
@kent99
They've patented "language interpretation"? Noam Chomsky ought to have a field day with that. Get some marshmallows and hot dogs and enjoy the ensuing flame fest.
@denisx
If someone blows me, they blew it.
@jedi Precisely. I read those patents and you can sue ANYBODY over those, they are that broad. There isn't a single analyst who takes those patents seriously- not one- they all deem it a load of BS. It's only Apple-fans ( there's that word again,sigh) who vehemently defend the company no matter how ridiculous it acts . I said it time and time again: those patents are complete nonsense . Microsoft patenting a panoramic view ,pffftt.
@hbueain Lame! Apple sues everyone for their I.P. violations. But their too big of bitches to man up and pay other people for their I.P. Apples slogan should be "Think Evil."
@MoonWalkerCTE Then all of a sudden we can see apple calling a patent infringement case against Google.. and we're running on circles again. http://bit.ly/google-v-apple-debacle-opinions
@BlueSpud45 hahahahahahahahahhaa, nice
@Jean Marc
Damn those fishheads of Espoo. They're really stinking up the mobile industry. Time to wrap them up in newspaper and throw them in the trash.
@Billy
Thats was the worst one yet.
@Mister Warmth just relax max !!
@David Bailey
if apple pays nokia a fee for every iphone they sell then nokia will never have to sell a product again to stay afloat
@JFH
Use that logic, they should all be paying Motorola.
@macserv
Yeah a bunch of dicks who use the law for their own greedy desires.
Saga continues. Lawyers rejoice.
@DoctarPeppar
Whoever loses, lawyers win.
@kickerbockeragua Lmao, so true
@DoctarPeppar Another day, another Apple lawsuit
@DoctarPeppar
Instead of spending all their money on lawyers they should finally create a patent pool as other companies do and benefit from it equally.
@DoctarPeppar
'Saga continues' is grossly understating it and Im really tired of all these silly suits. Look... I want to see Apple get spanked... BADLY!! So you either step up in a big way or dont. But PLEASE, stop teasing me, getting ma sh!t hard and not giving me the goods.
@DoctarPeppar Well most large companies like these have their own legal department. I used to work for an auto insurer who had their own legal department who handled all litigation against the company. Given the number of patents involved in this industry, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple and Nokia each had their own patent lawyers.
@kickerbockeragua, if you want to make money on gambling - open a casino. If you want to make money on the law - become a lawyer...
