Sprint: Samsung Moment and HTC Hero Android 2.1 updates now coming 'in Q2'
Ouch. Just a few days ago, it seems like a certainty that Sprint would be pushing out Android 2.1 updates to the aging Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, but now a company admin has stepped in to assure us that things aren't nearly that close to go. The full text is pasted in after the break, but the long and short of it is this: the long-awaited 2.1 update is now on track "to be available in Q2." The carrier did confess to wanting this out sooner rather than later, but hey, at least your patience is really, really appreciated. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
"Official Sprint Statement: Android 2.1"
Hello Community Members,
We wanted to let you know that Sprint continues to work closely with Samsung and HTC to deliver the highly anticipated Android 2.1 upgrade for Samsung Moment and HTC Hero. We are on track for the upgrade to be available in Q2. Sprint had hoped to have this resolved by now - we thank our customers for their patience as we work to bring them a positive experience with this upgrade.

This is the exact reason I rooted my Hero a few hours ago I am typing this via swype on 2.1, FAIL Sprint FAIL
Man and I thought I was going to be rewarded for not rooting my phone smh way to go Sprint/HTC.
Thats it. I'm flashing the Moment 2.1 leak.
I've heard rumors that the reason HTC is having trouble updating the Moment is because of the CDMA radio.
Apparently it has issues with their Sense update.
This of course, is very very bad news for the Evo...
So anyone who's thinking of getting the Evo, consider this your OFFICIAL WARNING.
GSM Androids will get 2.2 next month. By the Hero's timeline, the Evo will get 2.2 in January.
@Johnny Rockets By Moment I can only assume you're talking about the Hero. Since the Moment is a Samsung device, not HTC.
Q2 of 2010? 2011? 2012? LOL. They did not specify. We have waited long enough. 2.2 is going to be out soon as well. I am sort of getting tired of this now. Updates should be handled faster and more seamlessly in the future.
Sprint, seriously stop bundling your proprietary applications on to this stuff - let us download them if we want them later once your lads are done with testing. It will hopefully make future OS updates roll out faster.
I am having issues with Pandora and other HTC/Sprint apps shutting down on the HTC Hero randomly, but primarily Pandora. Nevertheless, a decent phone.
Sprint is really pissing me off, this is the same mess they were pulling with Blackberry updates,
Im kinda debating on getting a samsung moment and rooting it. Maybe finding a way to overlclock it too. Is the Evo's performance going to be that different?
Can't wait!
2.1 for droid Eris? Anyone no anything? My mom has the eris and she's mad at how slow it is
@Airjord A coworker had a chance to get a Droid and opted for the Eris. She let me play with it for a hour or so. "ewwww" was all I could think. Sense UI is awesome but the Eris was slow and laggy in places where it should not have been. It also has a cheap feel with far too much plastic in it. Anyways, If HTC could take the time to release the Incredible with a 2.1 modified Sense UI that runs better than stock Android on the Nexus One...why couldn't they work on updating the Hero and the Eris (which is just Verizon's version of the Hero) as well and release those updates when the Incredible launched?
I have no idea what the hold up is but it's sad when Root is your best option.
Great Sprint, you're just getting your image back on track and now you start this crap? Just MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Cmon Sprint, the leaked beta has been tested and thoroughly and most of the bugs worked out my hackers and those using the leaked version. There is absolutely no breaking bug that should be holding it back, especially since the SDX and XDA community have solved most of the issues themselves. They are only trying to sell some Evo's and the new Moment 2 when it comes out soon, no other reason, this is beyond stupid.
The last time I was in Sprint one of the reps told me that Verizon had a 30 day lock on all the 2.1 rollouts so Sprint had to wait for them to update their phones...Not sure how true it is but it seemed valid since people were coming in complaining about visual voicemail problems and he said it sucks they have to wait until 2.1 comes out to fix the issues.
this is why i threw the Hero in the drawer and got a Pre a few months ago. In retrospect, i should have ebayed it.
@irfan And how has the Pre been? That's what I'm looking to trade to also
@jjjmac Less Apps, but the usability is night and day better. I love the Pre, and Preware.
so um.....eris? kthx.
@michifreimann its coming soon
That's why I rooted my Hero and installed a custom 2.1 ROM, running pretty well.
Moto much?
When rooting and loading Roms, will be able to download apps you payed for in Market after changing the OS?
Hey,consider this people.
Your windows mobile OS was probably upgraded for free a whopping total of "0" times, making this the second upgrade for the Moment handset (I believe it was a bit of an update, threw more 1.6 features in and occasional fixes) much more fair that most recent models.
I wonder if Windows Mobile 7 (still amazed it wasn't called Windows Mobile Live ) will get any upgrades for the same handset.
Also, what is great is the potential that android could really be rolled up in the future if the carrier doesn't do upgrades, just for certain features if the processor can handle it.
We know when this Android 2.1 update is coming. Tuesday, June 30, 2010. At the very end of the 2nd quarter. Why? So they can sell more Evo handsets. Frankly, I'm pretty sure my Moment will be the last phone I will buy from Sprint. If they can't get this launch done right, how can we trust Sprint with future updates?
Sprint tweeted & said in their forums clearly that early 2Q 2010 was the amended deadline. It's clear that they are going to miss that. We are back to the 1H 2010 deadline. At least if they had a real reason to delay Android 2.1, they'd give a reason such as we found several showstopper bugs that prevent delivery. At least that would be understandable. But no reason what so ever was given. Sometimes you really want to like a company you do business with, & then there are companies like Sprint & AT&T that you absolutely LOVE TO HATE. My patience with Sprint & CEO Dan Hesse is running thin.
If anyone holds stock & goes to the stockholder's meeting, can we please have Dan Hesse fired? He must be the most incompetent CEO in America.
Or Wed June 30th. Sprint might not ever release it at all. You never can tell with Sprint.
The whole issue is that there haven't been any fixes to the native YouTube issue nor the mms failure to download issue. We hero users are waiting for small fixes to this but it has been made clear that "all issues will be addressed with the 2.1 upgrade." I want my 1.5 to run the programs it's supposed to run. I don't want to wait around for a 2.1 for my 1.5 to work...RELEASE A PATCH AND STOP SCREWING AROUND.
SPRINT! Seriously, stop being such a B****!
