Verizon iPhone chatter is getting harder (than usual) to ignore
Alright, stop us if you've heard this one before -- but seriously, we've noticed an uptick on the tip lines here at Engadget in the last couple weeks that's becoming difficult to ignore. It's one thing to say "hey, the iPhone is launching on Verizon," but we're noticing a particular confluence of facts that has us intrigued: it'll drop sometime in Summer, possibly in concert with the announcement that Verizon's first commercial LTE networks have gone live, and -- tread carefully here, because this is pretty difficult to believe and we don't want to get your hopes up only to have them smashed into a million pieces -- it'll supposedly even be a 4G launch device. We've gotten surprisingly specific details both from Verizon employees and tipsters whose companies are supposedly under NDA with Verizon to test enterprise deployments of the handset later this year, and they're all sending basically this same message. Read on! Now, assuming there's even an iota of truth to this noise, we can say with some confidence that this thing won't be an LTE exclusive -- it obviously makes sense to include LTE as a publicity stunt (even if it's only used for data and not voice), but considering how limited Big Red's 4G footprint will be in the near term, there's little doubt that this would be a CDMA / LTE dual-mode deal capable of working anywhere in the carrier's network. Phones like the EVO 4G have certainly proven that there's interest in a high-end smartphone that's configured this way.
Thing is, this isn't how Apple typically works -- at all. Three generations of iPhone prove conclusively that Cupertino is all about stringing the world along with incremental handset upgrades that are just barely evolutionary enough to make you want to shell out the cash, and what we've seen of the fourth-generation model suggests that strategy isn't slowing down any time soon. Demand for a Verizon iPhone is high enough so that it seems Apple could easily get away with a considerably less revolutionary CDMA-only model in 2010, saving LTE for a year or two down the road when the network is bigger, silicon is more efficient, and heck, who knows, maybe carriers will have even figured out voice implementations by then. If there's any carrier in North America that could singlehandedly twist Apple's arm into fast-forwarding Apple's R&D roadmap, though, it'd have to be Verizon with its 90 million-plus subscriber headcount. We suppose anything's possible as long as enough backs get scratched, and CEO Ivan Seidenberg has always struck us as the type of exec that'd just love to give AT&T a very public "screw you."
Either way, it might just be a matter of Apple and Verizon agreeing on numbers. Both companies are known to be stubborn in negotiations, and we can see either of them walking away (just as Verizon famously did prior to the original iPhone launch) until the John Hancocks are on the dotted line. Stay tuned -- this should be an incredibly interesting Summer.

@CannedCorn it had a microsim card slot so yeah pretty much it was GSM
I have a teacher who thinks she has "inside information" that she got from "talking to corporate" at VZW: this Summer, some sort of iPhone in Verizon stores on June 7th, announced June 6th. We all know that this is the DAY BEFORE the event, so I don't know where she got her info but she seems 100% sure it was legit.
Not to be a jerk, but anybody saying that they have friends/teachers/cousins/boyfriends/girlfriends/pets that work at Verizon, or know somebody that works at Verizon, that knows something, is full of it.
If there were people being briefed -- especially at the salesman/tech support level -- this news would have already leaked with full details.
AT&T employees aren't told of anything ahead of time. They learn when everybody else learns -- at the keynote. Especially after the Gizmodo leak, you'd better bet Verizon will be handled the exact same way.
Oh god... smug Verizon customers combined with disgustingly smug Apple fans? I'm going to be arrested the day this launches. I can already see it.
@sublimeandetc
I didn't think it was possible to be smug and have a Droid in your pocket.
Also, iPhone owners aren't 'smug'... the iPhone is the defacto standard. You're smug if you drive a Ferrari, not use a freakin' $200 phone. Punk.
Exacatly, which is way if you have equal coverage and quality of service, there is no difference and therefore no reason to switch carriers. Guess the point I am trying to make is I don't know why people are so excited about getting the iPhone on Verizon when they can already get it on AT&T (assuming the carriers are equal in your coverage area). Ok..apart from the fact that phone exclusivity is EVIL.
@Otakuon because the service between the two carriers is not equal
August has been blacked-out. Nobody (Even Managers) are now allowed to schedule/request ANY vacation time in August - All hands on deck... iPhone is coming in August
@MrMRusso
August is always blacked out...it's the 2nd busiest month of the year for sales. If it isn't announced in June its not coming out until 2011. End of story.
@cdheer
I'd have to say it is both.
Apple has everything to gain by pushing more iphones, thats an easy few million made by pushing iphone on verizon
I think it would be fucking brillent to release the 4th Generation Verizon CDMA iPhone, then release 4th gen ipod with a camera, iPad gets its update in september to boost sales then come christmas release iPad with Camera and the iPhone 4GS.
Hey look apple is going to make billions on stupid ass shit.
Too late....iphone is old news to me.
It just doesnt make sense to not have the iphone on verizon apple is loosing out on alot of itunes apps and phone sales...thet would probably triple there gross income.apple & s jobs are morons or in avatars navi language skowns btw means moron for the peeps who didnt see avatar . btw avatar is the modern day version of dances with wolves but with a better ending the indians win.BTW i do own a iphone 2g the original got it the christmas after it was released..like the phone but not being able to send pictures like a text message stinks
@vargis oh god, i lol'd..
@TendoMan
another way to say 'moron' is 'vargis'
"Three generations of iPhone prove conclusively that Cupertino is all about stringing the world along with incremental handset upgrades that are just barely evolutionary enough to make you want to shell out the cash..."
Well I'm glad someone at Engadget finally grew a fucking pair and said it. I will admit though, between OS 4.0 and the iPhone 4th Gen they finally have a chance to break this mold a bit in my opinion, but everything they've done in the past has been so "meh" to me.
LTE will win the war but WiMax is winning the battle. Sorry, I'm going with an Evo and I'll be happily using WiMax for at least the next 2 years.
Why do you think the leaked iPhone was a big deal??
It was the Verizon one that's why.
I called AT&T to inquire about my account... I asked a rep, " I know a the new iPhone comes out sometime next month. When will I be eligible for a full upgrade for the phone?" The rep says, "You will be fully eligible for the phone you're requesting next month!" .... The next iPhone still will be with AT&T. Verizon may also have the next iPhone as well. This will problably be an experiment to see which carrier is do better in sales and in service.
I honestly don't think it matters for Apple to be on AT&T or Verizon. They'll make money either way. Ulitmately, this argument is pointless to me. Every Carrier has a catch and are just about the same the iPhone on Verizon or AT&T would be the same.
I still say Sprint is the smarter choice. Apple doesn't do the obvious, they do what they want. Sprint needs the iPhone and would be willing to bend over backwards to get it. Verizon is doing just fine without. Plus, a little thing called WiMax, while possibly unused in this generation, would seem appealing for future iPhone growth.
Sounds crazy? Yup - but since when are they so predictable?
Why must this verizon rumor come up every time the new iPhone is around the corner. We all know dam well it’s not going to verizon till LTE comes out and that will not be to late next year. Why would anybody want it on verizon anyway? You all know it’s going to be a crippled phone. And if it does come on verizon pre- LTE there network will choke just like AT&T’s did.
@Macboy15
Because Verizon wants the iPhone so bad it hurts?
@wolfus huh? Please tell me why apple would go to sprint? They have half the subscribers that verizon and AT&T have. Sprint will never see the iPhone sorry. You'll see a pre paid iPhone at a dollar store before you see it at sprint. They suck anyway.
All future Verizon phones will probably be dual mode CDMA/ LTE dual mode phones because Verizon isn't adopting 2G and 3G GSM standards. It is just building LTE, which can be overlaid on a non-GSM backbone and soft handover CDMA traffic.
i like andriod devices better
Got the Droid Incredible the other day= dont care about the iphone being on verizon anymore at all
If the merge happens, then what occurs of the current iPhone customers? Will they be allowed to switch to verizon?
Note: I'm on verizon, using a droid, I'm not talking in terms of an actual iphone consumer.
@protonchain
that doesn't make any sense at all
Here's my 50-second video response to the Verizon-iPhone rumors:
http://www.thecynch.com/video-post-verizon-gets-the-iphone-summer-2010/
hiphone or iphone? i'm still wondering...
YPhone I68+
CECT Hiphone T1 +
CECT Hiphone M88
personally, I think it'd be a great phone to have on Verizon's network, the only thing that would stop the iPhone from doing well on Verizon's network is... business world travelers... UNLESS Apple does a DUAL BAND (CDMA and GSM) model. either way, I love my BlackBerry alot, I'd however get an iPhone if Verizon does indeed get it. so before people start bombing the hell out of me, consider that and not every one wants Windows Phone or an Android phone.
More carriers built into iPhone 4 software!
I wish I would have taken a screen shot but I'm suffering from the no sim card error on the iPhone 4 and the quick fix is to toggle airplane mode. The other day I noticed that right under Notifications a new option appeared "Carriers" I clicked on it and there were two options.
1) Automatic
2) The bar said searching and had the spinning wheel right after that.
I let it search for about 30 seconds and it was still spinning so I backed back to the main settings menu and then the carrier option went away. If it comes up again I'll take a screen shot and post it. But it sure seems as those other carriers will be coming soon if they built in the option for it in settings.
