AmpliTube iRig brings axe slingers closer to their iPhone, creative side (video)
Oh sure, we've seen something similar from PRS, but the reviews on the Guitarbud were -- how do you say? -- less than stellar. For those looking high and low for a decent alternative, IK Multimedia has outed the equally seductive AmpliTube iRig, a software / hardware tandem that enables axe slingers to jack their guitar or bass into an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and tweak their sound with a variety of amps and effects (up to 10 stomps, 5 amps, 5 cabinets and 2 microphones). The dongle also has a headphone jack for keeping your wailing to yourself (read: it's mom and neighbor approved), and if you're sporting a jailbroken device, you could also record your newest masterpiece while this hums along in the background. It's a beautiful thought, no? It's up for pre-order right now at $39.99, and you can peek a video of the solution in action just after the break.

Is the video up?
@keyl10 Yeah
@Stevenk
alright it finally appeared for me
@keyl10 Why am I seeing an add for Bras on engadget? If that's targeted advertising then they've got the wrong idea...somehow.
@Steve2000
Are you sure they didn't find out somehow about your cross-dressing habits?
@Steve2000 I get this sort of crap all the time, bras, holidays, car insurance..
#Fail.
@keyl10
Does it go up to eleven?
@Armchaircritic
I dont know.
They should release an Android version, I will be giving good use to my Strat and my Nexus One.
By the way Amplitube has great plugins for guitar effects, hope they include also the Hendrix version, the Vox AC-30, Marshall, and Fender amps, and the classic WahWah, Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Delay, Reverb, Echo, etc...
@Steve2000
I just get ads for Porsche, power tools, and guitars.
Google knows you better than you think.
@SuperHaole I'm pretty sure that from my browsing habits "they" know I enjoy breasts but that doesn't mean I need a bra. Targeted advertising fail.
last attempt by PRS is less than stellar. thought that it was the latency that wont make bearable guitar playing on the iPhone to be possible.
@thisisit
I would like to state that most PRS things fall short of their expected worth.
@thisisit I don't see latency being much of a problem here. Newer virtual amps for PCs sound awesome, with no noticeable latency, and in practice don't consume that many resources. An iThing should be able to handle it nicely.
@thisisit
Getting zero-latency monitoring on the iPhone apparently has not been easy. I don't know the details about why exactly, but I've read that in the forum of a multitrack recording app from the developers.
It would have been nice to hear the actual sound of the device instead of an actual stdio quality guitar recording in the video.
@Loveshack Exactly... Sigh..
@Loveshack
Demo sounds at the link:
Sounds OK, not great. Can't tell what the latency is.

Damn
Meh, I still prefer my Behringer Vamp2.
@guitarkid I uses to have one. Amazing device!
@guitarkid If this sounds as much better than the Behringer unit like current Amplitube products do (as in LIGHT YEARS beyond), it might be worth a look for sure.
$3 bucks for each effect, $4 per amp! Will Smith says, 'Oh, HELL no!'
@marKmarK That's less than Line 6 charges with POD Farm...I imagine they will be better quality as well.
@Godfail ...better quality? Keep dreaming.
@Godfail I can't agree with you on the quality comment - but different strokes and all that. To me this seems like a product people buy because they don't know what else is out there. Using your example--the pod farm--you get 106 different amps (bass and guitar), 46 different cabs, 97 pedals, and 6 mic preamps. With Amplitude that would cost you $424 for the amps (@ $4 each, not including cabs) and $291 for effects (@ $3 each, not including mix preamps) alone.
With software I like to scroll through the different effects, spending time tweaking everything and exploring. Can't really do that out of the box here; this product seems really limited.
If all i wanted to do was record my guitar into my computer/laptop or look for the cheapest solution I'd get a 1/4 inch to usb adapter (e.g. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Alesis-LineLink-Dual-14-inch-to-USB-Cable-Interface?sku=580882) and find some software online (legal software, of course.)
If is sounds as good a a Micro Cube, I'm sold.
Shipping is $45 for a $39.99 device!
Doesn't seem very practical for use anywhere outside of the house. . . I'd rather just get a couple of cheap $15 effects pedals.
As a guitarist, I see this as a waste of $$$. I'm already going to be carrying at least one guitar and an amp. Why not just bring along my Pod xt live instead of using my dinky iPhone to do a shitty job of being an effects box?.
@cc3d
For practicing in privacy, like the Korg PX4A.
not the prettiest interface but I'd try it out.
I don't really see how this could replace my Line6 Pocket POD.
@atheos
Pocket pod really isn't portable though..there's no battery option right? Needs wall plug? I would rather see a guitar effects processor like the Pocket Pod that is battery powered and uses the USB Audio input on the iPad and allows you to edit the presets from an app...but at 40$ for Amplitube's solution, how can you go wrong? :D
it will work nice with: Glee app and "I am T-Pain" app?
Great commercial. How much does that cost?
The camera connection kit on the iPad supports USB audio devices... Wonder if we'll see some growth in that direction as well...
@RidleyGriff
That's exactly what I was thinking...I didn't even know the iPad had audio input thru the 3.5mm jack? I use amplitube on my windows laptop and it sounds amazing..I sold my amp 2 weeks after I bought it and I never looked back. I don't expect the ipad \ iphone \ itouch version to sound the same though, but it's still pretty fucking cool!
I'm ordering it.
Looks pretty good to me, but a tad pricey. There's a load of iPhone FX apps out there for guitars and to my (non-professional) ears the latency is not particularly noticeable. But then I am a rubbish newbie guitarist! My personal set-up is guitar->Boss MicroBR->iVoice Pro mic->iPhone. No hiss or hum or loss of tone. Current fave FX app is RiotFX but I'm really keen to try this AmpliTube one. Advantages over just using the MicroBR are flexible multiple FX, better interface and updates.
AmpliTube returns no results in the App Store for me as of 8:22pm Eastern time...?
I was gonna see if it worked with a standard 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter
I'm wondering if this could work as an inexpensive line in recorder to record input from my bass or keyboard.
I'm wondering if this would allow for an inexpensive line-in recording solution.
Not for recording, but as a practice/headphone amp - dayum. Sounds better than my pandora, looks easier to use. And it's less than half the price! I'll take one.
