Well, what do you know -- perhaps there is an M9 in your future (or someone's future) after all! After hearing the one and only Jack Wong
detail the thing earlier this year, Beareyes.com is reporting that the device -- with the same 3.6-inch display, 1 GHz (Samsung S5PC110) CPU, HDMI 1.3 out and more -- may be out as early as this August. We think this is certainly do-able, although anything can happen -- as the drawn-out gestation of a certain
Meizu M8 made painfully clear. The
new news? Rather than KIRFin' up an Apple-esque interface, it looks like Android 2.1 might just be on tap. Sweet, eh? Look for it August 18, for around $350 depending on options... but don't be surprised if you're still looking long past the target date.
@BadWolfCubed
They made one product that looked sort of like the iPhone. All of their other products have been great.
@BadWolfCubed
HTC was once a supplier for carrier branded phones and the world knows where they are now.
Meizu is just one short step away from supplying carrier branded smartphones. Android is the perfect opening for such small manufacturers who cannot afford licensed OSes. They can easily be a manufacturer like HTC who really understand customer demands/user patterns.
@BadWolfCubed If you've followed htc since the 90s, Meizu is following the same path except Meizu is actually a pretty big company.
Dear T-Mobile....
I have an idea concerning your lack of high-end Android handsets...
@LiveFromThe215
Sucks that this one seems to be a CDMA phone though
From http://www.mobile88.com/cellphone/Meizu/Meizu-M9/preview.asp
"Meizu M9 is a WCDMA/ TD-SCDMA /CDMA phone with a Samsung S5PC110 1Ghz processor, 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM. The body size is measure at 59.5 x 113 x 11mm with a battery of 1350mAh. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera, 3.6 inch touchscreen display (720x480 pixel), Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and TV out."
Plus a new OS called "Andorid"??? On fire!!!
@JustAThought
Andoritos 2.1
that thin frame on the side will be annoying for a touchscreen phone - part of your fingers holding the phone will overlap and "touch" the screen by accident. Happens to me on the Desire every now and then....
Looks absolutely gorgeous!
Nicer than my Desire... Just.
Is this China only?
hmmm i don't know what to think about it
for Americans I would suggest waiting for the HTC Evo
Everywhere else, there are probably Evo alternatives in the works so id still suggest holding off
it does look nice though :)
@painfull2006 Except to get the Evo I'd have to switch to sprint. There is not way in hell that I'd ever switch to sprint. They have some of the worst coverage available for where I live. I'm content on T-Mobile so I'll wait for the gsm alternative you're speaking fondly of.
Won't Froyo be out in August?
Chinkity china, the chinese android...
Meizu has a long way to go to prove to the world that they are more than just KIRF makers...this is a step in the right direction tho.
this is one beautiful phone
@hated one
was that a joke? you cant buy a iphone for $49, have a laugh, you might get a contract with a iphone for $49 that means you must pay another $60 a month for two years. i dunno the actual monthly cost but say it is $60, then over two years that iphone costs $1489.
Meizu M9 with SonyEricsson wallpaper?
@serrias
Don't make the liberal art major do math. You are going to hurt his brain.
@max1001 That price is without contract. iPhone is with one and it's locked down for 2 years. M9 will be free and $350 seems to be reasonable if you look at iPhone 3GS prices in Ebay ($600+).
:) Funny it has the Sony Ericsson ?Satio? phone wallpaper. But anyway, yes using Android rather than making a fake iPhone OS is the smart way to go. Good work Meizu.
Looks nice, but a bit wide??
Here's a serious question... unless I'm missing something... I don't see what the big deal is. Why would I want this over an Evo or even a Nexus One or even dare I say a potential iPhone 4th Gen? Is there something I'm not seeing because nothing is jumping of the page for me specs wise.
And FTR... 3.6 is not big... 4.3 is HUGE.
Has nobody else noticed that weird camera flipping thing? What the hell is that?
what a nice and clean looking phone.
It will almost surely be China-only and it's TD/W/CDMA because those are the three competing 3G standards in China. They aren't dropping the Meizu MyMobile OS and it's actually supposed to get upgraded for the M9, suppposedly with Silverlight and other stuff I don't know too much about. To my knowledge, there's no official word on how Android is going to fit into the picture. They're also dead serious about pricing; the last official word was the the M9 would be sold with no internal storage (microSD slot) and no earphones to keep the cost reasonable in relation to the hardware.
Whatever your view of the company, do not count Meizu out. Yes, they're slow and yes, they're still working all the kinks out of the firmware more than a year after launch, but they've sold a bazillion M8's in China and will do they same when the M9 comes out. As I always point out, Meizu fans are die-hard rabid and 20,000 posts to their BBS is a really slow day (30,000+ is average). The specs of the M9 certainly won't be that special when it does get released, but the hardware will be top-shelf...definitely not "KIRF" bait.
Meizu has been in the phone business for basically three years now, so people shouldn't really care much about the M9; it's the M10 or M11 that folks should be watching for.
Sorry, also meant to say that image could very well be a fan render posted to Meizu's BBS; when an official image does leak, it will be posted everywhere, not just to a second-tier tech site (Beareyes, not Engadget).
@hated one This is has 1ghz Samsung CPU in it, RAM, MB, AND HDMI OUT!!! Dont forget the cost of a battery and 3.6 capacitive touch screen. Now those are the guts. The phone's obviously well crafted and that's an understatement. The cost to manufacture a phone like this is pretty high. There is a ton of craftsmanship and tech involved.
It's definitely worth the 350.00usd. Your just a moron.
I think this phone is impressive but the feature that smacks most of us current Android users around is the HDMI out! This is what we want manufacturers!!!
This feature is HUGE. Screen size is great and all but anything over 3.6 is just extra, not really needed (imo). HDMI out is the feature that makes the EVO pop in my mind. This company is getting the point and reacting with this device, they are smart for doing so.
A preview of the interface for this has been posted on the off. meizu bbs.
Here is an english thread about it on meizume:
http://www.meizume.com/general-chat/11734-first-m9-interface-preview.html
So its basically the same UI as on the CE-based os. However this UI rocks so im cool with it.
//Proud owner of a M8
Whoever put together this mockup is rather lazy, lack of originality, or know not the infringement law.
Using a Sony Ericsson Satio wallpaper?!
