@wakeup There is no reason not to jailbreak it's litteraly so easy a child could do it and it's reversable as well. I have had jailbroken iPhone replaced under apple warranty for a hardware issue. Apple gets a free dev community which drives them on the legit side if anything they are semi supporters of the jailbreak community. I'd say the majority of people don't steal apps or jailbreak at all so the business losses are negligible.
@Stepup Most of the "real" tablets out there have resistive screens and run windows...and are uber laggy and never did too well in terms of sales. I think HP realized this and that's why they canned the slate in favor of a WebOS tablet.
What do you mean a "real tablet"? It is currently the only tablet. HP's disappeared, Joojoo is worthless and everyone else's is vaporware at this point.
But yes, it is a large iPod, but it is fun and works well for what it is designed for. Don't like, don't buy it. But clearly someone likes it since they've already sold more than a million of them.
@wakeup you are wrong. a tablet is exactly what the ipad is.
now a 'real computer' is an issue, but then again it's not marketed for those that are looking for a 'real computer', but rather those looking for a (more or less) lightweight computer for email, an ereader etc.
@cherryboom Not easy to say but I actually agree with cherryboom on this one. Except for the insulting and the swearing. lol But for many many people this simplicity in handling and the basic apps the iPad provides are all they want and can cope with.
@Bacchus027 um its definitely not the ONLY tablet, its the only slate device at this size... Lenovo and HP have both been building great Tablets for years now that run a full OS and have access to real internet.. the iPad isnt a tablet in my mind, it created a new subcategory of the tablet universe, one that i personally think is pointless considering its too big to be easily portable and too dumbed down for me to consider carrying it around like a laptop... hopefully we wont see to many dumbbooks
in all fairness, to everyone concerned, for a bit of perspective it is worth re-reading the many years of speculation that led up to this device. i particularly recommend that you go and trawl the old forums at macrumors or apple insider, back when the future ipad like a unicorn or bigfoot. nobody but nobody imagined something like this, and certainly not the people who most wanted it to happen.
@Bacchus027 try googling Fujitsu Stylistic. These things have been on the market since atleast 2003 and they are essentially full fledged windows laptops sans the keyboard. however some of the newer models do have keyboards and flip around screens so it can be used as a notebook or a tablet.
You dont see many of them around in the wild because they are used by people doing real work like the doctors we used to setup with them at the last company I worked for, transitioning them from paper patient records to using these real tablets for patient records.
handwritten notes were transcribed into typed text in real time. you just write on the screen and software would type it out in whatever software you had open, no need to peck at an onscreen keyboard.
And really what kind of crack was apple smoking not including a stylus for hand written notes? this thing really could have been killer for students to take hand written notes and sketch diagrams on in class like it was a notepad. what a FAIL on apple
@d0ug "You dont see many of them around in the wild because they are used by people doing real work..." Well, that's the point isn't it? These devices clearly do not appeal to the average user - they are pricey, heavy and unintuitive.
@cherryboom A "real tablet PC" is a tablet form factor computer running a computer operating system with computer functionality. You wouldn't call a cellphone a tablet. This is a crippled iPhone with a bigger screen and battery running an iPhone limited OS, thus not a "real tablet PC" by any stretch of the imagination.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
No matter how hard you try, iPad is still a giant ipod and it will never be a real tablet.
@wakeup depends on your own definition of tablet computing,
@wakeup well you dont see many 'real' tablets out there?

@werty1432k
my real definition involves more than fart apps and "crappier versions of websites" disguised as apps

Yes but nowadays even a mobile phone can do all the items you have so clearly stated, actually come to think of it so can the ipod touch.
