New Core i7, Core i5 mobile processors to debut in HP Envy?
Intel's churning out the mobile chips like nobody's business -- no sooner does it admit the existence of Core i5 and Core i3 ULV CPUs, the chipmaker finds itself with more explaining to do. That's because dedicated Hewlett-Packard fans just found references to three new standard-voltage Core 2010 chips in the service manuals for the new HP Envy 17 and Envy 15 gaming laptops. The i7-840QM appears to be Intel's new top-of-the-line quad-core CPU, sporting a 1.86GHz clock that turbos up to 3.20GHz (or 3.20MHz, if you believe the above screencap) and 8MB of L3 cache; the i7-740QM is two steps down with 1.73GHz / 2.93 GHz clocks and a 6MB L3 cache; and the i5-450M appears to be indistinguishable from the existing i5-520M with 2.4GHz / 2.93 GHz clocks and 3MB of L3 to help it along. Given the megahertz typo above and the fact that none of these new processors appear anywhere else in the documentation, we wouldn't be surprised if these specs weren't rock-solid... but if they are, the new Envy may well live up to its name. I'm envious already
@MattsZ
Of course, who wouldn't be envy-ous?
Envys kinda suck... HP's GPUs are on the lower end of benchmarks, compared to others. Comparable to Sony, but both fall below Toshiba, Asus, etc.
Besides, there are the Extreme editions: mobile i7-920XM 2.0GHz --> 3.2GHz Turbo, not to mention the desktop 6-core i7-980X 3.33GHz --> 3.6GHz.
Intel >>> AMD
@shadowj0
What the hell are you talking about?
@MattsZ That's nice, this one would be a great contender for that macbook. Considering its price is very affordable as well. http://j.mp/envy-14-17-size
@daytripper
Shi... nvm. Taking my previous comment back.
RadHD5850 = WIN
But still, there are the Extreme editions: mobile i7-920XM 2.0GHz --> 3.2GHz Turbo, not to mention the desktop 6-core i7-980X 3.33GHz --> 3.6GHz.
And as always, Intel >>> AMD
Hot!
@pur Hopefully not.
@Broderbund well idk, I thought they got rid of the FSB and added QPI instead.
@pur Literally. The Envy already has heat issues. Putting in higher powered processors won't help. They're not too good for battery life either.
@pur
Core i7 Quad proc @45w TDP, the battery life on this thing must be like 30 minutes tops...with the LCD and wifi off and idling, 35 minutes tops.
All I can say is that no thanks because I've had to carry around a friggin' DELL XPS back in the day when that unit was ranked as having a mobile desktop power house cpu. Not only heavy, but it was totally shit.
@Spiraling Shape Not sure about your battery life comment. My wife's Envy 13 with the optional slice battery has been exceeding 8 hours of full constant use run time for photo editing, web design etc, which surprised me. I know they claimed 8-10 hours but I was realistically only expecting 6 at most, with idle times included, but she used it a full 8 hours, pretty much non stop and it still had some charge left to it.
@pingu324 quick update.. Hp site claims upto 18.75 hours of battery time. That must include standby time etc. As noted above, there's definitely a good 8+hours of full on hard usage with HD image editing, web design and video etc. Still impressive to me considering most laptops give you 4-6 hours max on paper, but 2 hours in the real world and probably 20 minutes a year later ;P
cool, now how about developing these processors for cell phones?
@statickeith
battery life, size, crashes you know... the stuff steve jobs would complain about that dont actually occur. But that would be a whole other lvl.
@statickeith
Phones have just passed the 1ghz mark for single core processors; putting the "Core i" wouldn't, at this time, be very economical due to size constraints.
@kickerbockeragua
More like power constraints... By the way, the Snapdragons and Omap proccessors are probably more powerful than comparably clocked pentium processors of a couple years back...
@kickerbockeragua I agree, but thats what technology is all about eh? Trying to do the impossible. And I'm just saying they should start developing these processors for cell phones. it sure looks hard now but who says its impossible? Besides, it will just revolutionize the way we use our cell phones
Are you sure you don't mean envy 14? I don't think the older envy 15 and 13 models are getting updated anymore after the 17 and 14 come out.
@Broderbund
I guess I stand corrected, only the 13 inch model is getting the boot after the 14 and 17 come out.
How can you say the i7 840QM is their new top of the line when the i7 920Qm still has better specs?
@Prevacator Top of the line for non-Extreme class processors. Click the read button - they do mention this there
Nice!
Seems like there's going to be quite a bit of "ENVY' from those new(ish) MacBook Pros that will be saddled with current/older generation 'i' CPUs until Apple's annual 'update' sometime next year.
@DaHarder
Aren't the macbookpros' cpu arrandale? And those are clarksfield with higher power consumption? Please correct me if im wrong.
@onehipcat
You are not wrong, but do require correction.
They should only call it the Envy if it was running webOS.
Now there's something to be envious of.
@Johnny Rockets WebOS on a laptop? Forgive me if I'm not exactly envious.
@Johnny Rockets
Explain to me why you'd want a full notebook, with a keyboard and running on an x86 based CPU to run webOS which is designed to run on ARM processors, and strictly touch-based interfaces.
You would be gimping the hell out of this notebook by doing that. Great hardware with a crap OS that can't utilize it. Don't be stupid.
@Johnny Rockets
I'm not envious of your arbitrary webOS references.
wish it was coming to the envy 14, which is looking like its going to be my next laptop
i3? i5?? HAHAHA I want i7 in my Laptop sorry yall... I dont want a BMW or Benz I want a Bently. Thanks. I need the maximum power.
@Sniggih With 15 minutes of Battery Life? No thanks.
@Sniggih
You can't even spell Bentley correctly.
A core i5 is fine for a laptop if you want power buy a desktop.
@keplenk Ok, ok, Um... so I need maxium power to edit my videos which I plan on starting to use that Horrid AVCHD@ 1080P. Obviously the i7 would be a monster. How does the i5 hold up to that?
Wow, 45W on your lap? Good luck reproducing.
Now does this seem like a company with an exploitive monopoly?
Bout time
In related news the HP Envy will also come with special Windows versions of GarageBand, iPhoto, and Front Row
I sent this in twice and no credit for me?! :(
The Envy's are beautiful machines... and I just happend to start looking much closer to HP ever since the Palm aqui. I cannot wait to see what beautiful babies they are gonna make... esp with HP close ties with consumers and cooperate alike...
http://twitter.com/mrkalel
@mrkalel that is entirely because they are epic, unabashed ripoffs of the MacBook Pro. I saw one in an ad and couldn't tell the difference. Almost like a KIRF.
@kthorstrejka Half the price, twice the power. This is capitalism in action, someone is actually selling Mac-like hardware at prices people are happy paying because there is a market for it. You're benefiting from capitalism, why complain?
@avinash240
Especially since it's a "KIRF" for being aluminum. The design isn't even the same.
And it's funny that they offer more options and run much cooler with more impressive hardware.
Hey, Engadget -- your link to "Core i5 and Core i3 ULV" in the write-up has two "http://"s, so you can't click it.
@iheartgadgetz Sorry - I meant you can click it, it just will show an error message.
anyone notice how the top core i7 will overclock from ghz to 2.3 mhz ?
A) These are MBP ripoffs
B) They are going to be hot little mofos. Especially the Quad-Core.
@kthorstrejka I walked into the apple store and didn't see a number pad, laser-etched design, or brushed magnesium on the MBP's. Mustn't been looking hard enough.
@kthorstrejka
Yes... Because they are aluminum. Right. The design is so similar.
And this KIRF would be funny - better cooling (even using more impressive hardware) and more options.
@kthorstrejka The MBP can fry eggs too, these laptops will merely be joining the party. All-Clad would be jealous of these laptops.
