Wii Controller Demo gets active, Android and Wiimote handle Donkey Kong on video
We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as "Wii Controller IME") was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn't expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we're kvetching or anything -- and in fact, we'd argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin' Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.

Update: Whoa, we just spotted that this app is actually pikipirs' completely free Wiimote Controller app (available now to download in alpha), which just so happened to surface at about the same time as Ryan Frawley's Will Controller IME (also available now). The more the merrier, right?

Okay...really?
@Oxyrt
Yes really. Imagine that via HD output on the EVO 4G. Methinks it'd be sweet.
@jubby2000 No, not that. I was talking about whoever uploaded these article pictures.
@jubby2000 It's time's like these I wish the n1 had HDMI out.
I've got to say though, I downloaded the Wiimote Controller 0.2 alpha on the market (FOR FREEE!) and am very impressed. I know for sure next time I get on a plane, or anywhere for an extended time I'll be bringing a wiimote along for the ride.
There only thing I want that could be better is a compact NES style bluetooth keypad with extra buttons for sega, snes, and gba. The wiimote is a bit large.
@Oxyrt The controller only really has a use for emulator games. While those games are nice to come back to every now and again, I just don't know who's playing these games more than about 3 times in total.
Every year someone ports the SNES emulator to some new device and while it's cool to have the feature, it's the same list of games. Nintendo should shake things up and actually port these games with touch controls so to switch character, you swipe over diddy or something and to roll, you circle your finger or swipe down.
I guess part of the problem is game devs not really coming up with franchises that are as powerful. At least not in the mobile games space.
@TinWard Agreed. iPhone owners have enjoyed this functionality for quite a while now, but probably don't use it on a regular basis (I don't anymore). The novelty eventually wears off as you realize that these games were meant for a larger screen. The iPad on the other hand seems like a great device for this type of functionality.
@justinpe Well also, what about games that were always meant to be portable? Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulators are also available for android, and those games were meant to be played on small screens, and are in my opinion much more fun to play than the small selection of mostly puzzle games on the android market.
I think I've seen that image before. Oh ya... on the previous post :P
@keyl10
Deja Vu?
@smartmouth
it was Darren Vu ;)
That's kind of cool. I just wish some of the phones had a decent keyboard or intuitive way to play games without using external controllers or gamepads that snap onto the phone. My idea is like a compact trackpoint like on Thinkpads, placed near the earpiece that works as an analog stick or digital pad. Volume and camera shutter buttons placed on the side so they can be used as shoulder buttons. And the android function buttons as physical buttons instead of capacitive buttons. I think it could work quite well...
While this is an awesome first step, I'd really like to see a ps3 controller used via Bluetooth on phones. The wii controller just isn't very good - it lacks enough buttons. Trying to play super Mario world on snes4iphone feels weird because you have to use the trigger with your left hand as a major action button.
@txphisher
PS3 controller works on Windows Mobile. I don't think it'd be too hard to add to Android. I guess no dev has thought of it yet? Keep looking, it's probably out there.

@txphisher N900 works great with ps3 controllers and wii controllers :D
@xsacha
Know of any emulators for windows mobile
@pologreg6 Have you even tried googling? WM emulators are not at all difficult to find.
Thank god, been looking forward to this! Downloading it now!
4 bucks is a small price to pay for awesome.
ughh... my head hurts! It's like engadget is trolling us on purpose! what fiends!
I'm getting my 5 year old son for the summer and he's obsessed with video games -little big planet in particular but I can't afford a PS3 at the moment. I'm actually thinking phone games will suite him well because they are getting so advanced these days.
Why does he keep saying N64 (emulator)? It's clearly SNES and clearly using SNESoid. Just a nitpick that at first threw me off since I'm not aware of a stable N64 emulator for Android yet.
@Jonbo298
Gotta agree, clearly SNesoid
@Jonbo298 Agreed. Also emulating N64 on a 1Ghz ARM chip seems to be a stretch.
@Schmich
It's been done with less.
Not ideal, of course, but doable.

@justinpe That is not a 1ghz Arm chip. That is an iPhone.
It works great on my Motorola Droid. Beat Super Mario Bros. This evening using This app and Nesoid with a Wii remote. Might look into SNES emulators when virtual console controller support is added.
@ebotee Weird sentence structure courtesy of iPad keyboard.
@ebotee Sure, blame it on the pad 8oP
@ebotee
If you have an iPad for yourself, you should be able to afford a video game console xbox 360 ($199) or less for your son. Just saying......
@trealtp say what?
@captnlove I think he was replying to clee100
@trealtp I think you are confused.
@ebotee
Engadget commenting system it was supposed to be directed at cleo100
Android; the linux desktop of SmartPhones.
@(Unverified)
I think the linux of smartphones would be maemo
as it is actually linux
@lockstockedd
Yea.. and even WebOS feels more like linux than android does.
You can already do this on Symbian and Windows Mobile.
Also, you can use a Symbian or Windows Mobile device AS a wiimote for your laptop to play emulated wii games (for example).
So that's Symbian, Windows Mobile and now Android. I don't know what other OS can do it though.
@xsacha
By the way I know someone is going to mention iPhone. iFun recently came out with an app last month that can use your iPhone as a wiimote but it doesn't work for me. I guess it works for someone though.
@xsacha Maemo
@xsacha
Guess what, you can do this on a Wii also, it's amazing. Who knows what's next, maybe they will do it for the SNES! Imagine how awesome it would be to play SNES games on SNES
it's total genius being able to use computing accessories with computing devices.
how do you actually hold the wiimote and phone together so that you can play this without setting the phone on a table or something?
@dhw
HDMI out to your HDTV
@xsacha only works if you have a evo. Somebody needs to come up with a wiimote + n1 attachment
@xsacha
How does the scaling work. Does the app/device scale to HDTV or does it send to tv and it scales? I'm curious cause I doubt the app has a great scaler
@dhw Actually, TV Out works on the Droid Incredible as well. Though it's only composite video.
HolY SH~T!!!!!!!!!!!!
N64 in your pocket plus a full, real controller!
With video out on future phones, damn!
Is there any doubt?
DROID DOES!
Let's see apple do that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZFBu-IP9KM
@Johnny Rockets
Every platform can do this actually. Except maybe Bada and WebOS.
@danbrunell LOL. nice one.
@danbrunell What if I dont want to jailbreak my iphone? Didnt think so.
@danbrunell
Ya it looked very smooth on the n1 the iphone 3gs jailbroken looked like shit. But yes you can do it
