We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as "Wii Controller IME") was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn't expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we're kvetching or anything -- and in fact, we'd argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin' Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Whoa, we just spotted that this app is actually pikipirs' completely free Wiimote Controller app (available now to download in alpha), which just so happened to surface at about the same time as Ryan Frawley's Will Controller IME (also available now). The more the merrier, right?
I'm getting like a half second delay on my droid, kind of makes really fast paced games hard to play, But for everything else it's perfect. Just beat the first dungeon in Zelda no prob.
@Link2877 I tried the app wiimote controller .2 alpha, it was free and I get no lag.
Maybe try that? This really is an excellent way to use existing peripherals with android..ingenious. (Yeah, it's been done on iPhone but I own an android phone, so this is nice and new)
The Wii and PS3 controllers work great on the Nokia N900 as well. I don't understand why apple hasn't developed something like this. I'm talking out of the box folks, for your average user. I hate on screen controls. They take up too much space.
I'm assuming there would be some legal issues if apple were to do something like this stock. And they rather not pay for the use of it if its only likely that a select few of us would actually use it.
plus it takes away from apple keeping up the all touch environment
@lockstockedd That's the point. They develop their own controller hardware. I'm willing to bet it would be more than a select few people using it. apple's mobile gaming business is huge.
Wiimote Controller app in the Market works great on my Nexus One with Nesoid. Going to pay for the full version of Nesoid now. Hopefully the developer will offer a paid, no-ad version. I hate ads being in every single app I open. I usually pay for commonly used apps just to get rid of those. Great use of my spare Wiimotes.
Donkey Kong Country is freakin amazing. This game is one of the reasons why I need an Android with a keyboard (Driod isn't my cup of tea)... Samsung Galaxy S Pro could be...
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
@Johnny Rockets You mean SNES? This isn't a N64 emulator. If you want tthat, you'll have to get an iPad or iPhone.

Darren, do you get paid every time you post "kvetch" or some derivative?

@Link2877
No delay here running snes4iphone on my iPad 3G ;-)

@Untamedfurby
Maybe, but you still have the unfortunate situation of owning an iPad.
Why?
@crojack
Why not?
There will definitely be no app(le) for that.
@Bahumbug actually zodTTD has had emulators on cydia that use the wiimote as an input device for months now.
Cool
Damn... It doesn't seem to work on my Hero. It doesn't work on the Desire or Droid as well.
@ChaosAlloy
edit: Works on Moto Droid, but not on the Incredible
@ChaosAlloy
Maybe if we ever get 2.1 it'll be available.
@ChaosAlloy The developer's site says it does not work with any phones that run sense ui yet.
any similar apps working on the desire?
Wii controller + iPad + Donkey Kong 64 = EPIC
Wii controller + Android = FAIL
Does anyone know of an N64 emulator like this for windows mobile?
Im pretty sure that isn't an N64 emulator
SNES Emu called Snesoid
Still
Looks good i mgith give it a try =D

Needs something like a PS3/Xbox controller that you can attach to your portable.
Portability fail.
Is that hard to put game buttons on this cell phones? Stupid companies.
He did say N64 right?

Cool but fucking pointless.
You have been able to do that on jailbroken iPhones for ages now, I've been using one with gb4iphone.
@wolfman775
And winmo before that, and symbian before that... etc etc etc
so what
Major bummer this doesn't work with most of the new HTC phones like the Incredible....
