ASUS CrossHair IV Extreme mainboard supports mix-and-match GPU setups
Scouting a new mainboard for that fancy new Phenom II X6 CPU you just picked up? You might want to hold off a minute, particularly if you're also planning on shopping for a few new GPUs as well. Hot Hardware has managed to get their paws around an upcoming motherboard from ASUS, the CrossHair IV Extreme. Much like the Maximus III Extreme that we spotted last November, this one also ships with the RoG Connect feature, enabling a secondary Bluetooth device (like a netbook or smartphone) to tweak overclocking settings from the sidelines. What really makes this one stand out, however, isn't the compatibility with all Socket AM3 Phenom and Athlon CPUs, nor the fancy new 890FX chipset. No -- it's the inclusion of Lucidlogix's nearly-forgotten Hydra solution, which allows users to mix-and-match GPUs (makes and models are no matter here) in order to create the most from whatever graphics cards you have sitting around. There's no mention of when this fellow will ship, but we'll be keeping an eye out at Computex just in case.

Nice cant wait to multi processor! 8core + 1.2GHz P4 LoL
@TestSubjectNameHere same :)
@TestSubjectNameHere
isn't this for gpu not cpu?
@TestSubjectNameHere GPU
@tobsmonster2 yes
@tobsmonster2
He's saying it in a future context whenever it becomes available.
@TestSubjectNameHere
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.....How big has a motherboard got to be to support slot 1, slot 2, Socket 370, socket 478, socket 775, 1156, 1366 .... then we shift on to AMD socket A, Socket 754, Socket 939 and AM3+....but seriously....read the article....its for graphics cards only, mainly due to the arguements and rights over chipsets and ownership...just one more step to eliminating the need to purchase either a crossfire or SLI motherboard dependant on your graphics vendor...Intel already do this....
@TestSubjectNameHere
Greats News Everyone !!!!!! :D
@TestSubjectNameHere
Any make or model of GRAPHICS CARD - you fool. ;)
@TestSubjectNameHere
This News is for mix and matching GPUs...NOT CPUs!
To be able to sport and Nividia AND an ATI card would be awesome.
Get a cheap 9800 for physics processing and a "running a desktop monitor" slap a new 5 series ATI on there for new DX11 Games on second monitor!!! That would be a sweet rig...
@AliasJay That's easily done, and you don't even need a motherboard with two 16x PCI-Express slots, just "break" one 1x slot to fit the 9800, and use Windows 7. :)
Saw some benchmarks of Hydra, not good at all. Pretty much kills the chipset on the spot.
@dicobalt Benchmarks are just arbitrary numbers with inflated values. I mean, in terms of real world usage there isn't much of difference between parts in their respective price brackets; excluding outliers of course.They rarely explain what constitutes point values, so when something is like 586pts higher you buy the thing without knowing why it's 586pts higher. For all you know the developers could write the code giving their favorite brands a 10% slant. Graphs and numbers are to hardware nerds as As Seen on TV actors are to middle aged women.
@Zavrion
Benchmarks of applications and games, not pointless weenie wagging stuff like SiSoft Sandra.
yay! but not really...
.
Maybe this is an on the board solution of letting me use my ATI card for graphics with an Nvidia card for PhysX.
@DougieBear I doubt it, but the GenL physx mod will allow that to work now.
So I can use my gt 260 with my 5850? Isn't there morals behind this?
@pantherguy Yes, you can. Use what you've paid for in my eyes. I use a 8800GT for physx with a 5870 but the 8800GT slows me down quite a bit... there aren't very many games that need/user physx anyway. Batman AA...
so your gonna spend 400$ on a mobo, then 400$ on a processor, and use old graphics cards that you have laying around?
@leefhead I'd say the people that do buy this will use their new 400$ graphics card AS WELL AS the old ones they have from their previous rig. I just hope they have the 400$ power supply as well for all the voltage they will be pulling down.
@leefhead I've always done this..
Whenever I needed multiple monitors (4-6) In addititon to my Nvidia GTX260 I plopped in my extra ATI 2600 XT and Nvidia NVS 285.
ASUS p6t mobo...
So wait a minute... We're supposed to install both sets of drivers for Nvidia and ATI? Didn't they spend years telling us not to cross the streams?
WOW im actually excited about this mobo. i just want to see what will happen if use all my old Nvidia cards in TRI-SLI 9800gt,7900gs,6600gt. (crysis 1920x1080 still under 30fps lol) one question will you still have to use a (sli-crossfire) bridge of some sort?
Doesn't windows 7 automatically let you run nvidia and ati cards at the same time without that chip? I have both brands in mine, but I just use the nvidia for physx (with genl patch). I think you can use for video too though.
@DaMaDo The Hydra lets you run these chips more like SLi or Crossfire X. You have different models or brands of card rendering different parts of the same frame, with the Hydra balancing the workload, compositing the frame together, and sending it back to your main GPU to output to your monitor.
Super, can throw a atimd card in for output and a nvidia card to heat the room in winter now.
@Amusednow You can already do that with the GenL PhysX mod. My 9800GT runs hotter than my 5850.
