BlackBerry Pearl 3G scoops FCC approvals in two flavors
RIM thought it'd save everyone some time (us included) by bundling both the 14- and 20-key variants of its upcoming Pearl 3G in a single FCC filing, which is awfully nice of them. The phones you're looking at here are both operating on WCDMA Bands II and V, which means they'll work swimmingly on Bell, Telus, Rogers, and AT&T (though Telus and Rogers have both announced the 20-key version alone, and neither Bell nor AT&T have said a peep on the matter). At any rate -- considering that RIM has promised a May release window -- we can't imagine it'll be long before we get the rest of the details (read: your move, AT&T).

Left, definitely left.
@N900
FUGLY. Blackberry is so 2009.
@travisonfire fugly? this phone is gorgeous... when RIM does design well they do it extremely well. If i werent dead set on buying the HD3 when it comes out i would buy this thing for sure
I think they should just kill of the blackberry pearl lineup..this phone sucks
@Android4Eva
I disagree, not everybody wants phone that is nothing but a giant touch screen.
@Android4Eva
Definitely not.
I've got an old Berry 8120 - and really like it.
Its a nice compromise between the full keyboard on the larger Berries and a more regular phone size.
And touchscreens for typing are just horrible and pointless (I've got a Sony MP3 player with a touchscreen - nice for scrolling - tapping at large objects works, typing is a pain)
In that respect the little Berry is a perfect phone :)
(Not having fat fingers helps too... - at least I can type very easily on it)
I've read that only the Pearl 3G Alpha-numeric is coming to the UK. If that is the case I won't be too happy :-( I want the condensed-qwerty. Also you may think the Blackberry Pearl Line-up should be killed, but it's great for people that can't really afford a full on smartphone, like myself.
Can't wait! C'mon RIM!
@AdamSapnik The Pearl requires the same data package as every other smartphone and many other smartphones can be purchased for at or around the same price.
If you can afford the pearl you can afford many other "full on smartphones".
Bell will release the pearl on the 13th
Meh. Not getting another Pearl when my contract is up.
I know we're a pretty niche demographic in the large scheme, but honestly, who here would actually buy either of these, or even knows somebody who would? I just don't get why you'd bother with this when the Curve is at what I would expect to be almost the same price, especially if it's a better phone in every way.
@kenny goo
Curve is too big and not good for one hand typing.
Seriously RIM. Stop making these 2005-ish smartphones.
No one gives a shit except 50yr old businessmen.
@iantolee I really hope you're joking. That demographic has lots of money and little eagerness to learn how to handle one of those "high tech buttonless phones" like my dad calls them. They would rather stick to something safe and slightly updated than to go for a new and much more modern phone like most of us here.
@iantolee
Actually everybody who wants a robust phone that works should look at a BlackBerry - versatile and no fashion item.
Mine's taken a slight bath - still works, a former fellow A-level student had his take a hit from an airgun in the UK - still works.
Maybe it doesn't appeal to everybody - but I see more and more of them appearing, also amongst university students!
They have evolved from the pure business tool they were.
Some people prefer functionality over form.
@DetlevCM ive thrown mine into walls and off a 3rd story balcony and it works perfectly
T9 on a Blackberry!?....... MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!
@AcE17 no its not madness its normal for the pearl series... 300 reference fail
In the day where brands are trying to consolidate the number of products they own, RIM is breeding more by keyboard layout. Sigh.
@Chi you do know that the dominate smartphone manufacturer in the US is RIM so i feel like whatever theyre doing is working and you telling them its not is pointless and misinformed
Wow so depression to look at this shitty phones.....So glad i own a touch screen phone....
@anotherworld
Call me back when you can type a full email comfortably on your touchscreen.
Touchscreens are pointless for typing - buttons won't ever be beaten here.
(Unless optical character recognition finally works perfectly, but considering that tablets induce a scribble... unless you write carefully it'll be a while)
Buttons are there for people who want to type/need to type - and those touchscreen phones are just a fashion item.
@DetlevCM I sure can.. I can type fast on a touch screen phone. I tried hardware keys and it not as good as typing on my 3gs...
RIM's latest innovation...T9 and 3G.
@Spaceshipped ...and Wi-Fi 802.11 n.
Both of these phones are hideous, imo. I know some folks like them, and to each their own, but I just can't get past their fugliness.
Why bother with 3G when your browser still sucks balls!? Faster Email, right! smh
If they were coming out soon on Sprint I would consider getting another Pearl. Size is what matters most to me and my real only fault with the current generation of Pearls is they are too slow to handle any of the new blackberry apps. But dang if it doesn't fit nicely in my pocket.
UGLY
If any of you guys had have a brain ... the Pearl 3G is a 9700 in a candy bar form factor and comes with 512mb app memory last time I checked
Crackberry.com ... all the info there
Direct competition for the e52/e55. Although, it's no competition. I'd take S60v3 over Blackberry OS any day.
Big in Japan...
Inefff a dantsayicc phone. Sent using my pearl.
The original BB Pearl's design was much more attractive..this is just ugly
T-Mobile USA version plz.
If you have to have one for work it is great because it fits easily in your pocket. I don't need a 5" screen to to review emails and don't wont to wear one of those fashionable belt clips. Just my $0.02.
Sorry for my ignorance, but this thing would have a sim card slot right? Would it work with tmobile's 3g network?
lol at people still buying these phones..
@jagox5
Sadly that you cannot find another choice (small, good typing experience) in the current market.
After having the privilege of not being able to dial 1800-any-numb with a blackberry pearl, because the keys and letter values were different than all phones ever made or produced in the history of mankind, i officially deem this new iteration worthless (the one on the left). if you cant ever DIAL. A. NUMBER. ON. A. PHONE. - well, there's so much wrong with that it just 'aint funny.
