@JFH Well ya it will be bigger but you can slap Android on any phone really. What matters is if the phone hardware functions better than Apple or not. Some do.... Some dont.
What do you expect? "Yeah, we're taking it in the rear this quarter."
It's understandable that their reality distortion field would try to influence a fact-filled report.
Unfortunately (well fortunately for the people who love watching such things) this article serves as nothing more than flame-bait and a return fire from Apple......against an unbiased 3rd party report.
Obviously the impending iPhone release affects the numbers. When you release a revision of a product every summer, less people are going to buy it in the first quarter.
As I said before... the king here wouldn't be without clothes... he would just be missing the crown. Apple has already made it's place and noone can take it away.
And yet it is inevitable... that they would face the same situation like they faced when macs were overrun by pcs running windows... here iPhone would be overrun by smartphones running android...
It's not hard to see and it's common sense. Being fanatically against or for this common sense is inconsequential.
It was inevitable Android would overtake the iPhone, as it is that Apple would of course have something to say about it. The iPod touch doesn't count though!
Right. So Apple first of all whine that it's US only, then lump in iPod touches - which aren't, you know, phones - into their sales numbers, then spout some stuff about worldwide markets and the competition not catching up despite the fact that they're... uh... third in that particular race behind Nokia and RIM.
The phrase "shitting themselves because they know just how fast that stock price is going to go south if growth slows" springs to mind.
@who said what Of course Noone could take that away. Noone has magical properties, loves or at least likes everything he sees, and is basically everywhere.
I don't see why you brought Noone into this, to be honest.
@iPhooey it really isn't about ego but about context. Saying that 90% of folks think the ipad is a piece of shit loses it's impact when you find out that it is the result of 200 respondents to a survey sent to the 5000 subscribers to Android World Magazine.
Also, the report makes it sound like Android is tops in share, when currently it is not. Just in sales (for what time period?). In a time when everyone and my 105 year old great grandmother 'knows' a new iphone is coming out and thus isn't buying, someone else having higher sales isn't shocking
Now if Android continues to have higher sales when the new iphone comes out, well that is something to crow about.
"Their blowout earnings probably proves that they didn't take it in the rear last quarter."
I apologize. I can see how that could be interpreted as me talking about earnings. I was merely stating that they were taking it in the rear in terms of marketshare. This new upstart OS is quickly increasing its percentage, and improving along the way.
"Still strange that they would respond since most people don't know or even care about NPDs report."
Evidently they responded because it suggests to the public (thanks to the reporting of Engadget) that Android is gaining marketshare despite the doings of Apple.
Gosh. I remember just a couple months ago when I was arguing with people who were saying how Apple computers were the best despite their sales record in comparison to PCs, and how the iPhone was the best BECAUSE it had such a large marketshare despite being just "one" phone (more like 6 if you count each capacity size). At least now they can be consistent in their arguments. lol
This wouldn't be true if the iPhone was on more networks. I think the iPhone/Verizon rumours are gaining weight by these sort of statements. Lots of iPod touch owners only bought it because they couldn't use their network.
Also, you have to point out that there was a BOGOF on Android phones, and the 3GS is pretty dated (and, if that weren't enough, the iPhone 4G was exposed, obviously hurting sales).
I'm just saying, there's a lot of if-s and but-s about these figures. Don't read 'victory' just yet...
@metaesapuet - Sure - but I don't think they'll create that many NEW customers - as usual, a large number of current iPhone customers will upgrade, but now there is more choice in the market, Apple better have more than a front facing camera if they want to convince people the iPhone is the best phone out there.
@clos1084 Wow, what a fanboy comment. I can't believe you got upranked for stating your opinion in such an unintelligent way. It really shows the attitudes of the commenters around here. Downrank me if you agree.
"it really isn't about ego but about context. Saying that 90% of folks think the ipad is a piece of shit loses it's impact when you find out that it is the result of 200 respondents to a survey sent to the 5000 subscribers to Android World Magazine."
...Except this was a random online survey of 150,000 people. Sorry if that's a little larger than 200 out of 5000.
Now if Android continues to have higher sales when the new iphone comes out, well that is something to crow about. "
Just keep moving that goalpost.
And for all those concerned about the unfair match-up between the "one" iPhone and the myriad of new Android devices, tough beans. It's Apple's fault that they chose to stay "tethered" (lol) to AT&T and not allow more carriers to get on board. Not to mention that their strategy of controlling everything about the iPhone isn't conducive to natural, organic growth. Instead, they have to whip people into a frenzy over marketing.
I will say one thing. They do market well. Everyone else should take a lesson from them.
@bheckman Agree. I've had a hardware upgrade credit to get a 3Gs in January but I didn't take it so that I can get the new one in June/July. I think a lot of people are in the same boat.
so many phones runs on android, while only iPhone runs iPhone os, of android is just as good as iPhone os, it should have at least 7x the marketshare of iphone's
Yes, there are extenuating circumstances. But in every case, you will find that it is Apple's fault.
"This wouldn't be true if the iPhone was on more networks. I think the iPhone/Verizon rumours are gaining weight by these sort of statements." Whose fault is that? Apple's.
"Lots of iPod touch owners only bought it because they couldn't use their network." Same as above. However, don't discount the people (like myself) who wished to buy the iPod Touch because they realized that they didn't want such a toy OS to be their cell phone. I want my cell phone open, and I couldn't care less about what happens to my media player/ entertainment unit. Apple's level of control is fine for that kind of machine, but for a phone it is unacceptable.
"Also, you have to point out that there was a BOGOF on Android phones, and the 3GS is pretty dated (and, if that weren't enough, the iPhone 4G was exposed, obviously hurting sales)."
Why doesn't Apple have a BOGO? Whose fault is that?
I agree with your 4G statement, however. That would most certainly hurt sales.
@JFH Apple are all about the reality distortion field. Like their fanboys (Jesus Diaz) reporting Netbooks are dead because of the iPad, even though netbook sales will grow 30% this year and grew 5% YOY for last month. They feel threatened so they make stuff up. It's how they roll.
That's the worst part though! They don't deny the facts! They simply acknowledge them quietly and shout their own stats, which they know are impressive and are completely irrelevant to the subject at hand.
@Mike10010100 Like when they said the iPad had sold 1 million in 28 days even though that figure included the pre-order sales that were sold before that same 28 days. An extremely dishonest company (like most companies)
@bheckman Perhaps but with Android devices they're always impending meaning, so many vendors are coming on board all the time. Realistically, it's only a matter of time before Android is the OS of choice.
@JFH The Android OS is released in at LEAST 20 smart phones every year. It only makes sense that it would eventually outpace the iPhone OS which, so far, is only released on ONE new phone every year. Both are GREAT OS' but the odds are just completely against Apple on this one.
Apple changed the frame of the mobile OS' with the iPhone OS & took a big chunk of the market nice & early but Google came in strong with the Android OS & the fact that it's implemented in MANY devices clearly gives it an advantage.
The fact still remains, though, that NO ONE Android device has outsold ANY ONE iPhone OS device of the same year. That's due to the one thing that made Android OS sales greater than iPhone OS sales in the US, the diversity of choice with the Android platform.
Some may argue that's part of what makes Android so great, some may say it's an over saturated OS market. I agree with the latter. But as an iPhone 3GS owner, I can say, I wish their was more variety with iPhone OS devices (just 3 choices please) instead of just the ONE that'll define that year.
"loses it's impact when you find out that it is the result of 200 respondents to a survey"
I take it you've never taken a course in statistics or regression analysis.
A proper statistical study with a sufficiently large, randomly selected sample will tell you a lot about the population within an arbitrary confidence interval.
That is, if I want to know something about the population within 99% certainty, 150,000 people may be all I need.
I find it funny how Apple didn't mention anything about being only with one model on one network. Neither did they mention anything about BOGOF. And all those other Apple fanboy excuses written here when NPD study was reported.
"The Android OS is released in at LEAST 20 smart phones every year. It only makes sense that it would eventually outpace the iPhone OS which, so far, is only released on ONE new phone every year. Both are GREAT OS' but the odds are just completely against Apple on this one."
My goodness. 20 per year? Could you find me a link to those 20 per year? Or are you using a hyperbole. Sometimes I have trouble telling whether or not fanboys actually believe that statement. The odds are against Apple? Whose fault is that?
"The fact still remains, though, that NO ONE Android device has outsold ANY ONE iPhone OS device of the same year. That's due to the one thing that made Android OS sales greater than iPhone OS sales in the US, the diversity of choice with the Android platform."
That's because, unlike Apple, Google doesn't hold 100% control over the platform. You want to slap it on a tablet? Go right ahead. Pop it on your newest phone and put a skin to completely cover it up? Certainly!
The fact that Apple sells both the hardware and software has always become problematic in the later years. We saw this back in the 80s with the Apple home computers, and we're seeing it now in fast forward on the mobile market.

Apple's fault again. Although you do have a choice between the 8 GB, the 16 GB and the 32 GB. And currently you can have any color background you want, so long as it's black.
@iPhooey this was not a REAL tabulation of sales. This is based on a SURVEY of 150,000 smartphone users. This is huge factor in the results. Also Apple announced 131% growth while Motorola and HTC had between 90 and 70% growth.... AT&T also added more new smartphone users than Verizon. All the later data comes from earnings calls presented by the respective companies - this NPD data is their 'guess' at what the share is. It's highly unusual for someone to present results from a survey, extrapolate it and then not have a margin of error!
As Engadget wrote, this is exactly what any well trained PR guy would have said whatever company he works for, Apple, Nokia, Google... It's a (non)-statement to a defeat. No surprise there.
Another person who's never even taken a high school course in statistics. Secondly, they have to be less than .05 of the total population (check). Then, you have a certain confidence level. I'm assuming they went with a 95% confidence (there's your margin of error. 95% of the time the true mean will be captured inside the range).
then the calculation is p = p-hat +- (z-score)* sqrt((p*q)/n).
@Mike10010100 Im not sure why people care so much about this. Obvious PR is obvious. My number one complaint with android is the marketplace, which blows comparded to app store. I'm constantly looking to replace games or apps that had a variety of choice in app store and not a single option on the android side. I will also say that overall the OS is far less intuitive but it's great when you learn it. Case in point jailbroken iPhone best of both worlds. Not quite as nice as android with lack of widgets and other neat GUI stuff but the far superior app store makes up for it.
I'm not saying Android hasn't sold more units or that this isn't a milestone for the platform, I'm just saying you can't take it as a public rejection of the iPhone.
Same goes for the Verizon thing. It'll come to Verizon at some point (maybe soon), and the iPhone could overtake Android again after that. Apple can really get momentum, and if they release a new iPhone on Verizon, they could really up their share with a massive launch. When the BOGOF sale ends, Android sales are also expected to really drop -- so take it with a grain of salt.
Still, congrats to Android. They're doing well to form a competitive market.
"Im not sure why people care so much about this. Obvious PR is obvious."
Very true. It's just interesting to see PR vs. an independent report.
"My number one complaint with android is the marketplace, which blows comparded to app store. I'm constantly looking to replace games or apps that had a variety of choice in app store and not a single option on the android side."
Except that they're adding over 90,000 apps in one month. This kind of growth indicates that eventually someone is going to make an app that does what you want it to do. Also, I haven't found a single app that wasn't offered by Android. Games, yeah, merely because the GDK hasn't been out that long.
"I will also say that overall the OS is far less intuitive but it's great when you learn it. Case in point jailbroken iPhone best of both worlds. Not quite as nice as android with lack of widgets and other neat GUI stuff but the far superior app store makes up for it."
If you have to jailbreak it to make it what you want, they blew it. If you need help getting some substitute apps, I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction. They might not all be in the Android Market, as Android supports direct downloading of apps off of third party websites.
@Tuan X yeah, although apple's iphone os is on one device, i think its still a fair fight, i mean, thats one of the beauties of an open phone OS, its open, apple chooses to keep its OS on one phone though i dont really care, i love android much more, it just needs more developers for apps though, at least they dont hold their app producers down :)

Right, just like Apple was bigger than Nokia as well, this is really trying to bend the truth. Android will be bigger, it is inevitable.
Agreed. As if we needed more evidence of how big Apple's ego is. Eventually the king will be told he wears no clothes.

@Tuan X
yeah, although apple's iphone os is on one device, i think its still a fair fight, i mean, thats one of the beauties of an open phone OS, its open, apple chooses to keep its OS on one phone
though i dont really care, i love android much more, it just needs more developers for apps
though, at least they dont hold their app producers down :)
:P
