Boxee for iPhone, iPad and Android all but confirmed in Vindicia payment processing deal
Oh sure, having Boxee nailed down to the desktop of your PC is fine and dandy, and that Boxee Box will ensure that the same experience is enjoyed by all who plant their fundament in front of your HDTV. But we all know what you're after -- lemon drops. And a mobile version of Boxee. In a post today by the company, it expressed outright joy in inking a deal with Vindicia in order to bring a payment processing solution to the platform; slated for implementation "by the end of the summer," this CashBox add-in would enable users to purchase "premium content" from Boxee's programming partners via credit card, gift card or PayPal. It's a vital step in Boxee finally finding a revenue stream (something it confessed to needing on a previous episode of The Engadget Show), and better still, "Vindicia's flexibility makes it possible for [Boxee] to enable payments on its website and across mobile platforms like the iPhone, Android and iPad." Yeah, those are the company's own words right there, and in case you still aren't believing your eyes, chew on one final quote:
Huzzah!"Boxee's eventual expansion to these platforms will pave the way for universally accessible content no matter where a user is (we love this idea!)."

Boxee is old news!!!
@FrankDTank
You = Fail
Boxee = Win
@AdamSpruijt +1 boxee rocks. On demand content
@Shakeandblake yeah because the world needs another paid content provider.
Their business model is a fail. 80% Of the people that matter to businesses will opt for a netflix account before giving an unproven company like boxee money for content.
People already have dish, directv, comcast, netflix, blockbuster.
Hulu, cbs etc.
What makes boxee so special? Their software?
grandma/grandpa/soccer moms dont care about that. They are looking at that hideous boxee box and saying "why would i buy it my tivo etc already that"
Truth of the matter is you can like a company but fact is...They are bound to fail specially when netflix is on damn near every device out there. And who does grandma/grandpa & soccer moms know? Not boxee
@FrankDTank
"Their business model is a fail."
ಠ_ಠ
@FrankDTank
You're not paying them, you're paying the content provider (sure, they take a cut)
The services you mentioned are all mostly going to be (or are already) available on Boxee
And the the software (like Android) will be available for fre, for hardware manufacturers to put on anything they please.
In fact if we compare it solely to android, Id almost say
It's DOOMED to succeed! :O
When the hell is the BOX coming out?... Ive been waiting
@FrankDTank
Actually Grandma DOES care, Boxee's four buttons are a simple retreat to the more complicated keyboards, browser bars and plugins that plague other platforms. Doesn't make for a very usable experience.
To answer your question, yes... its about the software. Its all about the software. You can take cutting edge hardware with kinda-sorta-works or 'good enough' but it doesn't mean squat to grandma if she can't turn it on.
@Steveorevo Is about the learning curve man.
A 65 year old wants to turn on the tv and flip to the channel. Not mess with menus and searching.
Conventional method. Press tv on, flip to the channel.
With boxee there is no TV GUIDE! Remember grandmas are used to TV GUIDE they been using it for over 30-40 years. You have to search for what you want then choose the episode you want to choose. And some are named episode1 episode2 etc. You honestly grandma have teh time to go through that?
And on top of that while she is already paying for cable or sat she is going to have to pay more for the content on boxee?
Get real..This is boxees wet dream gone bad.
@FrankDTank
Why do you feel Boxee's success is reliant on your Grandma's opinion of it?
:D
@FrankDTank
You honestly grandma have teh time to go through that?
No. Me seriously father and mother have teh Boxee understanding on the TV.
@FrankDTank
Are you a grandmother? How sweet.
Do you all really think age is a detriment to tech these days? My grandma can navigate her dish guide easliy, has a 52" plasma, and texts regularly... I saw an 80 year old man texting the other day at work. Old doesn't mean stupid, if anything they appreciate low cost beyond how easy something is. "nickel and dime store" anyone?
@FrankDTank Actually Boxee would be the best choice for a grandma, because there's no annoying Dish menus and timers and crap like that. Its just a simple D-pad and you choose what to play. Also Netflix is on Boxee so shut up
Are they still going to have all the stuff they have on there desktop software on the mobile version for free?
@Nn4458
Even the desktop software will no longer be free...
@Almo That sucks. What happened to open source being free.
@Nn4458
Open source being free doesn't put food in your mouth.
@Almo Boxee seems pretty committed to a) being free (they aren't even charging D-Link to put it on the boxee box) and b) being business model agnostic, so if the content provider wants to be free, ad supported, or pay to play boxee will support all of them.
@Almo I think the software itself and some of the content will still be free in addition to some pay services. Correct me if Im wrong plz :)
Where is my Boxee Box?
Boxee Stinks
On a side note, does the DLNA feature for the Samsung Galaxy S allow u to stream videos from ur pc to the phone?
Sorry but I really don't know. How will this work without flash?
I don't mean to be rude but are most blogging hosts kids? Do we really need our phones to have the ability to watch TV on them? Frick me! I am 45 and I have a 52" screen at home and when I am away there is a TV in my hotel. I don't need to watch TV while in the crapper, otherwise Id put an LCD in there. Ive got a few DVRs so not to miss anything and I have Apple TV to rent a flick when I want and do not pay a penny when I dont. Someone educate me please on the desire please...
@lvavila Someone offers you all your favorite content on all your devices... I'd much rather you educate us all on where the problem lies?
@lvavila
much much easier to stream from my iPod while I'm taking a wicked dump than to figure out how to install a LCD without the steam affecting it longterm
@akwizeguy , Ha. Well hear ya but your not suppose to mount the LCD while taking dump. Remember that old technologies called, uuhh, hmmmm, oh yeah: magazines? Those were simpler times!
@AdamSpruijt I get you. Sometimes it frustrates me that many want mobile games and TV everywhere they go. I'm a Linux guy so I love technology. I just wonder if there is ever going to be a line we draw with these smart devices. Thanks for replying.
@AdamSpruijt This is exactly my point. If someone doesn't want to use the software that is fine, but don't go around bashing it just because it does 'more' stuff. It is called technological advancements. It implies that a piece of technology becomes more powerful. Having boxee run on a smart phone demonstrates the devices power and gives it new meaning.
I can see where you're coming from OP; But I guess I've never been a traditions kind-of guy and when others say "Why?", I say "Why Not?"
@Evolyptic I read your reply a few times just to think it out. But again, where is the line drawn? I hear ya dude. I just have better things to do then watch tv on my watch, phone, future sun glasses and the back of my girl friends head while... . Thanks for the reply.
the only way boxee will go to mobile is if xbmc goes to mobile. I applaud boxee for what they offer and I love xbmc cause it is so unique. But xbmc will never be mainstream cause its constantly playing catch up with new hardware and software. Therefore boxee will never be mainstream.
Boxee?
Forget it for the mass audience.
A few techies like it, not me.
I prefer my flexible Netflix account any day!
Their CEO was not impressive to listen to either.
Anyone who visits a tech gadget blog outta be excited by boxee... I've been recommending boxee to my sister for 3 months, it needs to come out already!
I love Boxee. Pass some WebOS love please.
Yes! Boxee on ipad with MKV and XVID support please!
Great! Now I can watch Hul...
Why not just buy a slingbox and the iphone app. Watch all the tv you want on your iphone for free.
Or is boxee box something totally different, cause it doesn't seem like it.
@Happy Boxee is a media center with social aspects; It is not a content provider itself. Boxee will not ask you to pay for the software but the content that the providers have asked be PPV only.
Slingbox is to Live TV what Boxee is to TiVo.
eventual... as in the sun's eventual death
I've never used Boxee.
Does it allow watching of TV shows the day after its original air date like Hulu?
(Or at least within a few days?)
I used to use Boxee (since it was in Alpha), but I really prefer the XBMC interface over Boxee for browsing my local media, and for web content, Windows Media Center is actually pretty nice. And this is coming from someone who has used XBMC/Boxee on Ubuntu for the past 2 years. Switched the Windows 7 for dual boot so I could use my blu-ray drive, and WMC had impressed me. I still prefer XBMC for most things, but I almost never use Boxee anymore. Yeah, the CEO is also not a guy who instills a lot of confidence either.
Cannot wait
