Motorola Flipout spotted: an Android 2.1 / Motoblur device with a twist
Remember "Square Motorola Android slider?" Ah, those were the days. The little twister's returned, this time with much greater clarity and a new name. Meet Flipout. According to Gizmodo Brazil, we're looking at Android 2.1 with a dash of Motoblur thrown into the mix, a 2.8-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, 700MHz processor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, GPS, and a 3.1 megapixel camera. The HSPA phone is expected in the states this June in at least three different colors -- black, green, and pink. Backflip, Flipout... one can only hope Motorola keeps the trend alive with a Soundgarden-themed solar phone, the Outshined.

uuuhhhhhhhhhh.... -______-
@Skwidwerd exactly
@Skwidwerd They should atleast have stock 2.1 not with Motoblah...
@Skwidwerd
I thought Nokia patented this. Lawsuit!
@Skwidwerd
I think it actually looks like a cool design. Not saying I would get one personally, but I've seen people with phones like these before.
At least Moto is innovating and isn't churning out another RAZR.
@Shadow08
I don't know if I'd use the term "cool". "Interesting", like an "interesting face".
I'd be concerned that it'd break within a week. I've never been one to like any sort of flip/clamshell devices, they tend to get weak really quickly.
@Shadow08
Seems like they're trying TOO hard, which is probably just as bad.
They should just be themselves and accept it and everyone will love them.
@sortius I don't see why it would break in a week. Why is it so different than e.g. the G1 ?
@futurerheza i agree to a certain extent, but I have to say, the Backflip is a genius phone.
@liftedngifted1 Did you read it?
"looking at Android 2.1 with a dash of Motoblur"
It is still infected with motoblur, with a tiny battery.
This cannot end well.
Insert M. Night Shyamalan promo
"What a twist."
@Skwidwerd
They DID attempt to regain some ground by making a Soundgarden reference so I'm gonna call the whole thing a wash.
@Skwidwerd
oh, Skwidwerd.... now i can't help but read all your comments with your voice in my head, lol
@sortius It all depends if this is a smartphone or a feature phone. If it's a feature phone it might be a nice upgrade for my wife who currently loves her Karma. The majority of phone sales are featurephones still and not smartphones so it makes sense for them to try and innovate. However, if it is a smartphone then it is fail.
@chripuck
Well, it has Android, so technically you might call it a smartphone just based on that. On the other hand, so many phones are becoming "smart" based upon that uses-a-"smartphone"-OS criterion, that the term "smartphone" will probably mean absolutely nothing in a couple years (not that it means much now).
@Skwidwerd A great phone although I'm not a fan of blur. Opinions. http://j.mp/flipout-phone-by-moto
Kinda like the KIN 1 but the Motorola Version
Actually, it looks like a decent keyboard....Probably buying (when and if it becomes available beyond L.America)

Dear lord that is one ugly ass phone.
@AndroFan before you talk about ugly phones take a look at this then look back at this phone and tell me which looks better http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/20/blackberry-9670-flip-spotted-running-os-6-0-causes-eyes-to-blee/
I have a feeling certain apps arent going to like that screen ratio...
700mhz processor? That thing is packing some heat considering the size, too bad the screen's resolution is useless for pretty much every app.
You should know that cpu clock doesn't really mean anything, for all we know this barely faster than the Cliq XT and Devour with their 600mhz cpu.The Samsung Moment has like a 800mhz cpu, yet it is less powerful than the Moto Droid, and apparently I didn't see it(Moment) on the Adobe 10.1 flash support.
motorola really needs to hire a new design team...
hmmm let me guess.. AT&T hahahahahahha
I'VE GONE BLIND FROM THIS ATROCITY SOMEONE SEND HELP
But seriously, thanks Motorola for making Android look like shit again. Can't you do us a favor and just not fire the guys who manage to make you a good phone every 7 years or so?
3.1mp camera? another moto phone fail.
@fuss
I'll take 3.1 good megapixels over 5.0 or 8.0 or 12.0 horseshit megapixels. I doubt this delivers, however.
Motorola should focus on making a good high end phone.
The droid is already dated.
Its like if Nokia put symbian on the twist. Might as well make a clamshell android phone while they're at it.
The back flip was a neat design it just needed to be spec'd up to par
Motorola needs to die
Motorola should go back to Razrs.
How about a keyboard in the style of the RAZR? D:
To think just a few months ago it seemed like Moto was comig back with the Droid. I guess they just got lucky :\
Someone please abort the abomination to android known as motoblur
Just great looks worse than the backflip. I don't even care for ANDROID ANYMORE. If this P.O.S. comes to AT&T forget it man. I might as well move to prepaid. I could care less for DELL AREO. That's have to be the slowest processor on a ANDROID with a 2.1. MOTOROLA you lost my faith in buying your phones ever again. AND TO YOU AT&T I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON ALL PHONES YOU GET.
I will say it. I like this phone :)
@Atkins i agree its refreshing to have some new thinkers in the market, i like the idea of the twist screen. it really gives a funner feel than a slider and i personally like my phone to stand out (currently go back and forth between a bb pearl flip and a lg decoy) both are different in a very nice way. i think this will do it too, maybe a bit too small of a screen but that can be dealt with. and i personally love motoblur as much as i like sense and i cant stand straight android, its not polished enough. come to att and verizon and moto can have another great handset. and think this phone isnt targeted towards nerds who surf engadget all day. it pointed to tweens and teens who want their social network all the time the same as the backflip is. the people who dont care about bein able to get apps other places than a app store and wont notice the crippling effect att seems to have on android
@jascop heck it goes to the same group as the kin phones with more possibilities and support
@Atkins Agreed. Also, they keyboard seems more friendly than landscape for thumbs, but not as size restricted as the portrait style.
Major con: Screen & Bezel. Screen is too small, bezel seems to take up 1/3 of the space just to make it widescreen (I almost called out a 4:3 aspect ratio as a problem. ha)
@juanvaldez True. But the idea is very good IMHO and I am confident in Motorola building a sturdy device. But now that you point it out, they could've used all the space for a screen ( no need for bezel, given the size of the device)
