Sony turns VAIO P into world's most expensive PS3 keyboard
Yesterday we told you what we thought about the new VAIO P, an $800 conversation piece of a netbook, and now Sony is giving potential owners something else to talk about. The little laptop has been granted "Remote Keyboard" functionality, turning it into a sort of giant economy sized version of the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad, a device we weren't particularly fond of when we first played with it way back in 2008. Like that device, the VAIO P has a battery life that's too short and a keyboard that's uncomfortable to use, but this new ability adds one more piece of function this very form-centric laptop desperately needs. The software isn't officially available in the US yet, but we're told the Japanese version at the source link will do you just fine if you're one of the few, the proud, and the financially irresponsible rocking a VAIO P today.

But with that keyboard, you can use windows!
@Stevenk Zing!
The link doesnt link to an actual program. Has anyone found it?
much better keyboard than sony's official dual shock 3 thing, any day of the week
@Wiggy Fuzz
You could just hook up any USB keyboard for $5. Hell even get a wireless for how much you'd pay for that peripheral...
Can i please have my Linux back Sony? I don't care about this...
@Sieg
All you need to do is spend 800 on a netbook! oh you already spent $600 on a ps3 that said it had linux? well to bad no refund
I bet Engadget will make a different judgement if Apple had released this instead of Sony. Really.
@revoltracers
Well, a certain tech blog beginning with E and anding with ngadget was quite stoked when they saw an iPad and four iPod Touches forming the worlds most expensive Scrabble board...no complaints that day as I remember.
@Tes inded.....I dont recall reading "financially irresponsible" about that.....even tho even IF you bought just ONE of the iPod Touches & iPad you would be spending at least $700.....but hey....it was done using Apple Products so its full of Win right?
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
You lot beat me to it... the pro apple spin on this site is just rediculous to behold sometimes
@Mark S
I don't think it's as bad as gizmodo.
It's nice that they're doing it, though they should do it for all their laptops, really. I don't see anything to bash.
So why is Sony set on making "wireless Keyboards" when the PS3 is no longer running Linux like Ken Kutaragi Promised?
$800 is a little much to talk to all of the second-life wannabes in PS Home....
@BMills yea....because Linux is the only thing you need a keyboard for....I mean its not like any games have Keyboard and mouse support....
@BMills well..the great Ken Kutaragi aint there anymore
If you buy a VAIO P as a keyboard for your PS3, you're an idiot. However, having the extra functionality there if you decide to get a P and have a PS3 is nice.
An overpriced netbook becomes an overpriced remote keyboard.
Next.
@beyondthetech
DURP find me a competing device then i will gladly agree that it is overpriced.
All that i can see is the thing has been out for over 1 year now and apart from some other ultra mini laptop by Fujitsu (i think) that never ended up coming out there is nothing that can compete.
Why is it so expensive ? I can't see any fruit logo on it.
Oh wait! It got fruit colors..
This is actually PRETTY AWESOME. Just what I needed to sway me into buying a PS3. I'm a PC gamer because of the mouse+keyboard configuration.
The vaio P has better specs than almost any netbook and runs win 7 pro.
It's more portable than an ipad and can do more. It's lighter, more powerful and more expensive. I'd take a Vaio P over the $839 64gb ipad 3g version.
I recall reading on another tech blog about them missing the olden days of Sony.
It seems like Sony has returned!
I still cannot believe Bluray won the format wars, Sony has never gotten that one right! (see also, Betamax, MiniDisc, Memorystick, ATRAC3)
Way to go Sony, charging way too much for a keyboard for the overpriced PS3, but hey it also runs Windows!
@kapryt
Yeah Sony NEVER gets it right. Apart from the Blu-ray which you mentioned...and the CD...and the 3.5 floppy disk which was only discontinued THIS year. Oh and the fact that those Betamax tapes were a standard in video broadcasting all over the world so netted Sony billions.
Apart from all that they are clueless.
@Tes
Didn't Philips invent the CD and IBM invent the floppy disc???
@kapryt
Like all these things they were part of a consortium but overall Sony took the lead.
@kapryt
Plus this isn't about who invented...that will always be some nerd in a lab somewhere. It's the company driving people to adopt it as a standard.
@Tes
I'm with you on that. Sony has led a number of notable projects over the years. I am not anti-Sony at all, I feel unfortunately for them they were the old Apple. Cool to be seen with, semi-proprietary, overpriced. Just like Apple they did lead some great innovations, we can thank the Sony Clie for where portable computers are today and thank Apple for where they will be in the future.
The appeal of being seen as "cool" at an extra expensive while being locked in to some proprietary things (Memory Stick, MD, ATRAC3 etc back before Sony put dual SD readers, dumped MD and let their music players play MP3 too) just as Apple and Quicktime (no Flash) has been somewhat of a pain... but I could get over it... if not for the pain of the added expense (an $800 netbook, excuse me, super-netbook c'mon!)
What is that game they're showing on the screen?
$800..i prefer buy an ipad
I CALLED IT! Well mostly...

I know everyone will be quick to laugh at this, but take a look back and it's not so bad. The first use of the PSP's Remote Play was to convert it to a rear view mirror for a racing game, and now you can the PixelJunk games and access your entire media library on the go. Maybe the the Sony Vaio line will actually get some pretty good Playstation integration for something other than just a converting it into a keyboard.
Now we wait until someone hacks this to work on any PC :)
Software isn't out yet.
Seems cool but they forgot that it's a screen too!
I don't know what game that is, but it took me much longer than it should've to realize it wasn't Animal Crossing.
