Verizon confirms it's working on a tablet with Google (Update: Android!)
Not much by way of detail here, but Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam just confirmed that his company is working on tablets with Google in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Unfortunately, that's all we've got to work with at the moment -- McAdam said tablets are "part of the 'next big wave of opportunities,' but didn't say what OS the Google devices would run, just that Verizon's "looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience." That sounds like something Google's been working on for a while, so we'll take a guess and say it's Android-based, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a Chrome OS tablet or netbook make the scene at some point in the future. We're also wondering who'll build this thing: any number of companies from Dell to Toshiba to MSI have already started working on Android tablets, and we're sure HTC and Motorola would totally jump at the opportunity. A nice crisp confirmed fact wrapped in layers of chewy speculation -- just how we likes it.
Update: Bloomberg scored some more details in an interview with Marquett Smith, Verizon's VP of corporate communications; the tablet is said be Android-based, and more details will be released later this week. Let the wait begin!

That's super duper.
@Grubasaurus Rex
android is a joke, its so overrated. Hp slate with Web OS sounds so much more appealing than android. unless youre into downloading task managers (most downloaded android app).
@account5 Haters gonna Hate. Android would do great on a tablet
@AlienSix
you ever use android? all the apps are worse and less functional than iphones. go try facebook on both and get back at me
@AlienSix I wish that the brains from Apple, Microsoft, and Google would come together, and build the greatest OS ever. Then build the greatest hardware ever. Or have HTC do it.
@Grubasaurus Rex
they dont need to, thats what windows phone 7 is. ill take xbox games and zune player over the android player and bejeweled
@account5: I'll restate what he said "Haters gonna Hate."
@Grubasaurus Rex
AND WE GOTTA WINNNNNNNNNNNEERRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
@Grubasaurus Rex What about a Chrome OS tablet??
Go use a widget on your iPhone. Oh wait.....
@liftedngifted1
chrome os is a browser. why do you even mention it as if its anything more than a joke?
@account5
"ill take xbox games and zune player"
You have exquisite taste my friend.
@Grubasaurus Rex
I call it Nebula X! Hahaha, I'd love to see the google tablet. It's most likely to be running Chrome OS and the hardwares will blow our minds. Google FTW!
@eminisp
halo and mw2 on xbox are the largest online games on the planet, how is that "exquisite"?
@AlienSix Que the thousand people that will complain that android is awful for a tablet.
IMO it would be, that's why El Jobso modified the iPhone os for the iPad, google will do the same to android.
Or do some crazyness with chrome os.
@account5 The only reason certain apps are better on iphone is because of the internal storage space. I'll admit this is a problem, but google is on track to address that. Is Apple ever going to let you replace core elements on your phone in a future update, like swype for text input? No
@Grubasaurus Rex I would buy that.
@account5
It is an OS, because it is called Chrome O.S. that stands for Operational System, not browser...
@account5 Please drop the lame fanboyism and just simply celebrate the fact that there is new technology coming around the pike that provides us consumers with new options. I'm really getting tired of these lame arguments.
@shadowj0
Is it just me who finds the "Apple + ATT" camp a little weaker than the "Google + Verizon" camp?
@Grubasaurus Rex
Source: "Wallk Street Journal"
c'mon... gotta fix that.
@Grubasaurus Rex
I say BRING IT ON!
@account5 Ok, I just have to say this, the quality of apps is not decided by the OS but its decided by the developer of the app, if Facebook wants to port over a half-assed app then that is their choice, but I can tell that you don't not use an Android phone because there are a lot of high quality apps, go try PicSay and Toutieur on the iPhone and get back with me, oh wait you don't have those apps on your iPhone. It was only a matter of time before Google came out with a tablet and to be honest, with you being a consumer you should be one of the main one excited to have all of these choices on what to buy, but I see Steve Jobs has brainwashed you too. So next time please do your reasearch on apps before you make a comment because you will continue to make an ass out of yourself.
@Grubasaurus Rex
I know, but the only problem with that is that SJ will steal the software and try to go it alone then declare "he invented it". Then he'll get pissed off because he found out Gates took it too and started selling it to more people!
And the worst part? They both realized that Google simply gave it away for free.
@account5 who cares if the most downloaded app is a task manager?i dont see why that would make it suck. That bottom bar you see in iphone os 4.0 is a fancy built in manager of apps which in short are refereed to tasks. as well as the web os's tiles(cant remember what their really called). However I agree I want a web os tablet (if I were to get a tablet at all). Their all pretty useless in my opinion.
@account5 WebOS has native task managing... Smart guy.
@account5 Having not used the Android Facebook app, I cannot comment, but if the iPhone Facebook app is more usable than another app, that other app has serious issues.
Since Joe Hewitt ditched iPhone development, the Facebook app has gone south fast.
@account5 Halo is overrated and Mw2 is available on pretty much every other platform.
@account5 are you a professional android or did someone from Google steal your girlfriend? Either way you have an unhealthy hate about you towards a great OS. There are plenty of therapists in your yellow pages that can help you out, bud.
@account5: You obviously don't understand sarcasm. And "exquisite" is a POSITIVE adjective; the literal interpretation of eminisp's comment was not an insult. Get out of your mom's basement and read a book or two.
@who said what
Nope, you're not the only one :D
@account5 if htc make this slate it will be better then the ipad as they make better phone than the iphone the htc desire is so much better look at this link

@Grubasaurus Rex
Don't forget Google recently acquired BumpTop, I don't know if this has been said already but yeah.
@patp Well seeing that the Task Manager app is the WORST thing you can put on an Android device I don't know why. Android since version 1.6 has had its' memory and process management redone. Every iteration since then has only gotten better. More often than not Task Managers/Task Kilelrs cause more harm when used on Android than not. Just let the OS do its' job and you'll be surprised.
@AlienSix Its just a big nexus one.
@JojoMojo So what? When Google does(copies) it... its different!
@mranthony
OMG! Learn to use periods you rambling nonsense, run-on sentence fanboy!!!
@Grubasaurus Rex This is the real super tablet we've all been waiting for -- and it be on Verizon! Reactions* http://bit.ly/tablet-concept-by-google-amazing
@AlienSix
I think it would be great on a tablet too. What I think is really interesting, also, is that neither of these companies are what you would call a hardware company.
Verizon+Google+tablet=MEGA WIN!
@forHim247
cdma is a dying technology.
@account5 With Verizon working with Google I dont think they will get the iPhone on there Network
@account5
And yet the Droid and Droid Eris led android to a win in US sales last quarter?
Dying technology? More like a network that actually works. I could care less what tech I'm using if it works the way it should. I'm VERY happy on Verizon getting 2mbps downloads / 1mbps upoads. And even if I wasn't, LTE comes out in force next year on Verizon.
@forHim247
Why is verizon developing hardware? isnt this something that should be left up to hardware companies? Shouldnt it be Dell+google+verizon=something...
Is verizon having a hard time finding tablet hardware partners? Or is verizon not happy with whats out there? Or are hardware companies avoiding launching hardware of verizons network? I'd like to know.
@ramifications
congrats, more preteens got the $10 plastic droid eris than the iphone. why does that matter though?
@zipp It doesn't say Verizon is actually building this thing,I guess it's more like Verizon+Google+X=Mega WIN+X
@forHim247 = Verizon+Google+tablet=MEGA WIN!
Here, let me fix that formula for you...
Verizon + Google + Tablet / CDMA = Fail
Although...
Google + Tablet + GSM = Pure Win
I love my cdma phone....I have have alltel/VZW for 15 years and in that time I have received credit for 10 dropped calls....can any of u goons on a gsm network say that....
@account5
Yeah, so is GSM! It's ALL getting replaced by LTE (or WiMax). And I would be willing to bet that Verizon's LTE network will rock ATT's world just as its CDMA network does ATT's GSM...
@marknichelson
LTE or WiMax, I don't care, lets just get to the next level. Both use GSM tech and by that I mean they use a GSM chip which is better in the long run. If you're someone who never travels outside your country and/or never changes phones, then heck, stick with your CDMA phone. Otherwise, GSM is the way to go, always.
