Visual Boy Zune brings Game Boy emulation to Zune HD (video)
Once hacked, the Zune HD's rabid fanbase wasted no time in ensuring the device could play Doom. Now, the ZuneBoards want to give it Zelda, too. User BackAtIt has taken the wrappings off the first working emulator for Zune, which is currently capable of playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs, but little else -- though this "Visual Boy Zune" app is ported from the same VisualBoyAdvance code that's enabled handheld emulation since 2004, it's in early alpha with quite a bit of work left to do. A recent update enabled state save emulation and a ROM selector, but there's no audio output, let alone Game Boy Advance support; BackAtIt says he'll need to rewrite much of the codebase to take advantage of the Zune HD's Tegra architecture. Still, it's never too early for a proof of concept video, and you'll find two blurry ones after the break -- unless you'd rather try it out for yourself at the source link.

Its the gameboy micro I always wanted.
@mentalchaos
Why does the picture show the SNES Link to the Past game instead of a GameBoy Color title?
@Kamalot Its the GBA port of Link to the Past. Remember? The one that also sported 4 Swords Adventure?
This is what he probably originally intended to display on the Zune... but sounds like the Zune can't handle that much.
@ZaxCG2 can't handle it? It's more like 'wasn't programmed to do it, so it will take some work to get it running perfectly'. I'm sure you have no doubts that your favorite apple device can run it though
kool!
Ok, I'm calling it: this is the most LEGAL piece of software I've ever seen.
ok, taking the risked of being downranked. why not just buy an iPod touch and jailbreak it? it already has pretty stable support for emulators. including gb,gbc, and gba. just a thought
@steve19137
With Zune HD, I don't have to worry that the next update will brick my device.
@jhoeforth good point.
@steve19137
color me rabid, but my Zune also doesn't charge me for every song....Zune pass is sweet.
@cwalters74 Do it, I bought one and it's probably the best thing I've ever bought.
Then again, I did manage to get it for about $100
I frigging love Zelda.
still t unresponsive for me to try it on my zune. waiting for something really worth it before i try these homebrew apps.
Zine stinks. Gt an iPod touch and jailbreak that.
@Ilikeapplestuffalot
What is a "Zine"?
@Ilikeapplestuffalot The iPod Touch is more expensive, iTunes eats processing power, and jailbreaking is broken nearly every update. And anyways, I wanted a music player with my Zune HD, not a PDA, even though stuff like this is completely awesome.
@Ilikeapplestuffalot
please tell us what other things stink based on you having no clue what you're talking about and no first hand knowledge.
@Ilikeapplestuffalot You leave Magazines alone!
@Ilikeapplestuffalot
What's "Gt" got to do with this? This isn't a car website.
@r34p3r
"Zine" is a tell that a person is posting from an iPhone or Touch and is lazy. If you type in Zune, the iPhone "corrects" it to Zine. Mr. ilike was apparently too lazy to fix it back to Zune.

Sent from my iPod

I believe the Zine ZN5 is a good camera phone made by Motorola a couple years back.
Oh sure, get my hopes up by including a screenshot of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and then dash them by saying the emulator supports Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs only. :(
@Devhux A link to the past is for gameboy advance aswell.

@chorx
That's his point. Tim puts up a screen shot of a game for GameBoy Advance.... but the emulator can NOT play GameBoy Advance games. quite misleading if you ask me. He should've stuck with Link's Awakening instead
@skyblaze
bleh, Sean... not Tim
@Devhux
Link's Awakening is a better game anyway. Just a shame it's shorter.
@Devhux
Yeah Links Awakening was awesome, here's a correct pic

Still waiting for a Touhou port...
I wish more people would make some applications for the Zune 30GB, since it's supported by the hack and are cheaply available. Imagine, a $100 30GB WIFI capable device with TV output.
Nice!
By the way, good job all you 3 Zune programmers... SNES has a lot more than 2 buttons.. good luck playing LTTP with a B and an A button.

Never have kids. Ever. The thought of your stupidity making its way into the gene pool is sad beyond words.
i need this on my android now
er... it's been around for ages: GameBoid, check the market. No hacking required: near perfect gba emu (especially on more recent cpus). Coupled with the game gripper on my milestone: perfect.
Zune HD FTW
microsoft always on the past
Now give it MAC SUPPORT and I'm sold.
Yawn. My phone can already do this.
