Xbox 360 3D gaming a reality with LG partnership

The image above is unmistakable: 3D gaming on an Xbox 360 with the help of an LG 3D television. From the looks of the Korean press release, LG and Microsoft have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly market LG's new 3D televisions along side 3D-capable Xbox 360 games in South Korea, then later expand the partnership throughout the Asia Pacific region. If we're reading this correctly then it appears set to begin by bundling Xbox 360 3D games with LG 55/47LX9500 LED televisions sometime at the end of June. In other words, we're not seeing anything specific claiming new Xbox 360 hardware, just like we've seen on the PS3.

Update: Here's a statement direct from Microsoft US on the partnership and the future of 3D Xbox 360 gaming:

3D games are available today on Xbox 360 and will continue to evolve. Today, you can buy a 3DTV and wear glasses to play games like Avatar and "Batman: Arkham Asylum." The promotional partnership with LG announced in South Korea today is specific to the South Korean market, but is further evidence that as 3D adoption grows, Xbox 360 will support 3D games and entertainment.

I'm not sure about the PS3, but I think the xbox 360 is getting a little long in the tooth. Time for the xbox 720 (or whatever) with Blu-ray (I know it'll pain MS to use it, but it's the way to go for now) and a big "standard" hard drive. Then you can think about Natal and 3D.

In the hands of a great developer 360 is already capable of full 3D TV support. Invincible tiger has stereoscopic 3D running 60fps @ 1080p and it launched on XBLA in august '09...

I'm quite happy not degrading my 4.5 year old gaming boxes graphics just to have a silly 3D effect.
I still don't think I want to see 3D on the next gen consoles as I want 1080p 60fps across the board, not xbox 360/PS3 2D level graphics in 3D.

I would be very excited to hear this news if it was published a few months back. But since I have now experience 3D gaming on a PC with Nvidia 3D vision, I feeling toward gaming in 3D doesn't make much sense anymore, especially in FPS games. In 3D mode, I can hardly aim anymore since the depth perception and the game crosshair are misaligned. Just imagine you are holding out a thumb in front of you as the cross hair and try to aim an object at a distance with both eyes open...it's just not that enjoyable anymore when you stop getting kill counts.

My guess is the 360 doesn't implement enough of the HDMI spec to do 3D properly through the standard so they've partnered up with LG to introduce some kind of hack mode. Maybe the 360 sends some special graphic that the TV recognizes as an instruction or the TV has some manual switch that lets the user set 3D because the 360 can't.

Otherwise they would have just announced the 360 would become 3D capable in some future update as per the spec and that would be that.

@(Unverified) Your assumption is entirely wrong. The 360 (and the PS3) already do 3D just fine. Avatar the Game works with every 3DTV on the 360. They don't need an update to enable the games, that's just for changing system settings.

Problem is all of the top games on 360 run at 640p, 30fps, halve the pixels per second and it means 320p at 60fps.

and seeing as 320p is what an iPhone screen is...

Correct me if im wrong. Will the xbox 360 only be able to play 3d made games in 3d? like they wont be able to make forza play in 3d?

and cant the ps3 do some excisiting games thats already out and be played in 3d?

and last if the xbox game is made for 3d it prob ably take a perfomance hit, would they code the game to look good in 3d but what if you dont have a 3d tv.... will we end up with a 2d game that looks not as graphical? cause that would be annoying as fuck!
