Archos 5 shown running Maemo, Android 2.0, but no Windows 3.11 yet (video)
With the Archos 5 we were shown that Android can be a legitimate media powerhouse. But, it's tough for a player to be stuck with 1.6 while other devices have already broken in their 2.1 shoes. Fear not, as the device is showing to be generally receptive to tweaks, first being an install of Maemo that seemingly runs quite well but, with no WiFi support, is something of a non-starter at this point. Also now booting is Android 2.0, a clean port that was apparently quite easily installed on the device but, sadly, doesn't work with the touchscreen, meaning it is even more useless at this point. Maybe if you're willing to lend a hand you can help to get one or the other rather more functional -- or maybe 1.6 doesn't look so bad anymore. Videos of both alt-OSes are after the break, and installation instructions are at the source links.

Or maybe you could just...you know...buy an EVO 4G without contract when it comes out next month
@ArhcAngel
... without contract? What use is that when you're locked to Sprint?
@microlith not entirely true. It has WiFi and 4G which you can get through Sprint or Clear (Technically still Sprint but plans are a little cheaper). I suspect the cost is comparable to this Archos which doesn't have 4G or even 3G.
@ArhcAngel How much is a EVO without contract? More than $500? Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android is available without contract at $249 right now in Radio Shack.
@Charbax
Yup, and the EVO will work everywhere and you can actually make calls on it. You can't compare the two. I had the Archos 5 and returned it as even after FW updates it constantly froze and lagged. It's great for video playback and wifi browsing....when it works.
If I were a Sprint customer I would buy the EVO without contract before buying the Archos again. No matter how excited you get about it on a Youtube video you can't polish a turd.
@ArhcAngel
Why doesn't Archos understand?..resistive+android 1.6=fail
to graduate you need atleast, capacitive+android 2.1+
we need the offical android update from archos!
Now if someone would find a way to port Android to the non-internet-tablet version of the Archos 5, that would be awesome. It certainly has the specs to be able to handle it.
Windows for workgroups is a multimedia power-house too. Capable of playing such media formats as midi and mpg1.
This doesn't do me any good until it's got a stable NT 3.5 port.
I agree with ChairmanMeow, if Archos want this thing to ever sale they need to get this thing updated to 2.1. In a few months this thing will be totally obsolete.
now this is exactly why windows tablets have a market even though the ipad is selling by the millions.
What's with the 3.11 WFW reference in the title? I mean, are they planning on making it work with 3.11? Or will it be stuck with 3.1 and no networking? And if I have to carry around an external 3.5" floppy, I'm gonna be annoyed. I mean, I can see the lack of a 5 1/4" floppy, or an 8" floppy, but a 3.5"? That's a deal breaker right there.
@theJML 3.1 would definitely be a poor choice thanks to its lack of networking support. It's 3.11 or nothing here, but you're right, without a floppy peripheral that port project could be dead in the water.
Archos 5 could be an ideal developer/testing machine for mobile devices, if they could up the hardware specs a bit.
@NewBie, that's what N900 is for...
Always nice to see some development.
2:23 min of my life that I don't get back.
That was probably the most useless video I ever saw on Engadget.
Bought it to try it out and this thing turned out to be such a disappointing piece of junk. I'd have actually preferred it to have no Archos Media player overlay.
The first one is NOT maemo. It is MER.
"It is Linux based and layers the best open-source elements of Nokia's Maemo platform over a modern Ubuntu base. "
@hulkkii spot on couldn't have said it better myself, engadget should hire you for refence next time :)
Archos has shitty firmwares though!
I'm an Archos fanboy, one of about 3 on the planet. Their hardware is god, and the hackers make up for poor software.
@joelaf
So do you think this hack could be applied to the 7 Home Tablet? I have no problem hacking it, but I wonder about the functionality of the tablet even if it is hacked...
