Dell sticks AMD's latest crop inside new Dell Studio XPS 7100 line
Dell's wasting no time appropriating AMD's new Phenom II X6 chips, pushing out a brand new Studio XPS line to deal with the new top of the line (and a few quad cores as well) from "that other processor company." While AMD can crow about having more cores at a mid-range price, Dell isn't trying to pass these off as pure competition for Intel's brood: the Studio XPS 7100 line is AMD-only, while the Core i-based Studio XPS 8100 desktops are a clear step up model number-wise. The 7100 baseline system, with integrated graphics, goes for $699, but Dell's doing this with an enthusiast slant, packing in a 460 watt power supply to power up some fancy graphics and giving hardcore users room to grow.
We got to check out a $1,199 system running the AMD Phenom II X6 1050T, which is supposed to be somewhat comparable to an Intel Core i5 760, and paired up with ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics and 6GB of RAM the machine makes for a pretty tight gaming rig. Unfortunately, AMD's top-of-line 5970 graphics are being held for the Studio XPS 8100, and AMD's best new X6 chip, the 1090T (roughly a Core i7 870), won't be available from Dell until this summer. Still, if you're looking for a nice balance between price and performance, AMD and Dell might have something to offer with this new understated desktop setup.

That $1,199 Dell set up will have tax added to it also. For that same price I can build a better PC from newegg and tax free!!!!.
@m3nphls
But not labor free. Guess your time isn't worth much to you?
@m3nphls
ZOMG MEE TWOO
actually it's pretty nice to see a good consumer desktop that's capable of gaming and isn't a bank breaker nor an eyesore, hope they still offer the red accents
@cardfan Now be fair, if he enjoys building computers then his time is not a cost.
@cardfan It takes about an afternoon of work to build a pc and install windows on it, maybe you're just really slow
That or you make a million dollars an hour
@Marbles Time is always money, even fun time. Unless you live in your moms basement, of course.
Meh, even though I know Dell owns Alienware I would still opt for the Area51 $1,199 computer. I have a 2008 XPS model and its a POS
I have the Studio XPS 8100 with an i7-860 and the GT240 and it performs pretty well! Runs Crysis on a 1680x1050 resolution with some settings tweaked down a bit (at 30fps, which is enough). Only gripe is that it's a bit loud. Bought it for 850 euros which is actually cheaper than if I'd build the same setup myself (price would be around 920 euros)
I'm pretty contend with my pc, but if I look at these specs I get pretty jealous.... (and the chasing looks better too)
The Case! Man. That is like...soo...2003. They need to seriously find some good case designers. Goodness gracious...
@questionexclamation
Give me an example of such a case design in 2003.

Before 2000's there was the infamous ubiquitous beige boxes. Now post-2000's we have the ubiquitous black plastic faced boxes.
Or I could built my own and not have to wait for the dell options I would want.
@cardfan WTFRU? STFU!
"Pssst.....We secretly replaced Steve Jobs' Mac Pro with a Dell XPS Tower... heheheheheh... lets see if he notices...."
Why all the crap ports?
@netsql
I don't see any crap inputs on the machine. Then again I don't know of many crap peripherals either.
I do see a bunch of media card slots up top though!
building a computer is so easy... if it takes as much time as you think it does for you somethings wrong going to go wrong or you dont know what your doing... i can build one in less than 10 mins give me the parts
Not sure where the article got some of its info. I'm getting my XPS 9000 today with a 5870. I would have preferred the 8100 for the Lynnfield processor but it isnt even available with the 5870, let alone the 5970. The only machine i could find on Dell's site with the 5970 offered is alienware. Even this 7100 gets the option of the 5870 but the 8100 does not.
