Sprint's HTC EVO 4G put through its bandwidth-sucking paces
So, since you're stuck paying $10 extra per month for "premium data services" (not that bad of a 4G tax, if you ask us), what wonders await you on the HTC EVO 4G, fueled by Sprint's next-gen network? Well, if these best-case-scenario tests we just did are any indication: everything you ever dreamed of. Of course, Sprint's WiMAX might end up stumbling up the steps of reality, but there's no denying that this is 21st century technology that's worthy of some of the excitement that's been lavished upon it. We just saw demos of Qik video conferencing, YouTube HQ (output brilliantly over HDMI), simultaneous data and voice usage, and even a straight-up speed test (4Mbps down, 1Mbps up, the latter of which is a hard cap). The phone performed brilliantly in each scenario, but of course that's to be expected when you have a 4G tower in the building. Check out the videos of all this breathless action after the break. Added bonus? All four (totaling about 100MB) were uploaded with our laptop tethered over WiFi to an HTC EVO 4G. Don't be jealous. Okay, be just a little bit jealous.

@hated one
Can you not read? its 70 for the whole plan. Unlimited Minutes, Data, Text, EVERYTHING. The extra 10 is for the 4G service. Makes your whole phone plan 80. If you got a corporate discount, gets down too be pretty cheap.
@hated one
Yes, i would rather have 30$ a month, but i would also like calling and texting on a Phone... Which would equal to be over 100$ on AT&T. I'm not sure exactly, but im not gonna check...
what's the ping on this? can I play games on it without ghosting around too much?
how about torrenting? will that be viable on this device?
@tgiokdi
He said his ping was around 120ms with 38 devices on the local 4g network.
@zeroinfinity2
I'm not seeing that anywhere in his post, do you have a link? fyi: I did a search for "ping" and for "120" after your comment, and I can't find it :(
@tgiokdi
It's in the second video -- the speed test one.
@zeroinfinity2
ah, I didn't realize there were videos with content on this post, they were blocked on my ISP.
so 120 is ok, but definately not good enough for xboxing. so sad :( thanks for the heads up!
OHHH MYYYY
@hated one
The phone is 300+Tax Out the door. Makes it about 350 Your rebate in 8-10 weeks knocks off 100. So about 250 for the phone. Where are you getting your information? Also, take an ESL class. Your earlier troll-like comments and lack of proper grammar just shows you probably could use some primary education(Especially with math looking at those numbers you pulled out of nowhere).
@hated one Holy Shit!!! You're an idiot!
That's the price for an entire plan including unlimited minutes and texts along with 3G data. $10 extra for 4G. AT&T charges $70 for unlimited minutes alone. Another $20 for unlimited texts, and another $30 for data.
@SCB
No, of course not... he will get the 100+ plan on AT&T with and inferior iPhone. (100+)*24= 2400+... The 100+ is because i'm not sure what the inlimited plan on AT&T costs.
2400+ > 1600...
just a minor correction...
I think that either you are truly this stupid (highly unlikely), or you are grasping to threads, which do not make sense or are irrelevant.
@account5
Apple employee?
Can't wait for a 4G Blackberry
@hated one
Did you realize this phone is launching on SPRINT and not VERIZON or AT&T?
When I saw those download speeds I decided to check what speed I am getting on my Milestone running on Rogers network in Canada.
After 5 tests, I am ranging 3729 to 4798 on downloads and 824 to 1106 on uploads.
Does this seem high to any of you?? What speeds are others getting on their networks?
@theshaner Did you have Wifi turned on? Just checking.
@Camperton No it was on the regular network. I did do some on WiFi as well to show the difference. Check out the pic here...

This all sounds so vaguely familiar....oh that's right, same noise we heard about the Palm Pre iPhone killer.
Better hardware, better software. Yadda yadda. It may be 4G, but it's still Sprint. They'll figure out some way to screw it all up.
It certainly is a good lookin phone either way.
@blainer
speaking of someone pulling numbers out of his/her @ss.
http://now.sprint.com/evo/
"phone requires....premium data buyup"
WTF Sprint you freakin idiots
I just want the damn phone for wifi and 3g..
why would i pay another $10/month for something
I dont want?
@obobo
Because it still ends up being cheaper than a plan on AT&T or Verizon?
@zsmorr and there's NO data cap, 3G or 4G.
@skemme Is no 3g data cap confirmed? That alone is worth the $10
Finally, a real iphone killer.
Seriously, the EVO4g is EVERYTHING i've ever wanted in a phone.
There is not one spec that disappoints me..there is not one thing that it doesn't have that I want...This is like the perfect phone!
HDMI output, 720p video capturing, video conferencing with front facing cam, SD slot, huge capacitive screen, 4g speeds, android with flash support...Man I am so tempted to switch to sprint...Guess I'll have to wait and see what Verizon counters with...better be something good, not like those stupid kin phones that no one really wants.
@DoctarPeppar
Verizon won't have anything to compete until this time next year. Make the switch dude. Try it for 30 days. If you don't like it, return it for all your money back, no questions asked. This is Sprint we're talking about.
@zeroinfinity2 lol the only thing in the future to compete is the HD3... and maybe a Dell Phone...Damn there are some sweet phones coming later this year... none within a month or two of the evo however
@hated one
ignorance is a bliss for you.
@hated one The only thing that is confirmed is that you are a troll. For the good of humanity, everyone please ignore this troll. If a troll's message goes ignored, eventually they'll get bored and move on. Also please report this user. While a ban won't stop trolls like this, it does deter them.
OK, we've got Clearwire 4G already in Hawaii, so I'm psyched to get the EVO in June. I just have one question about Android, if anybody knows... I use Voice Dialing a lot since handsfree on the road is mandatory here. I heard that Android doesn't do Voice Commands yet. Does anybody know if that is true?
@HawaiiTom check the market! Some are okay. If worst comes to worst, get mytouch slide - GENIUS BUTTON!!
@HawaiiTom That's a 2.1 feature (which the Evo runs). You hold down the search button, then say "call 'X'" and it goes. You can also say "navigate to 'X'" and it goes. It also has voice input for EVERY text field. Just hit the little mic button on the virtual keyboard and speak away. It has some stumbling blocks, but overall, it works pretty well. And since it's powered by Google's servers, the more people that use it, the better it gets.
even if the evo doesn't surpass iphone in sales, it still raises the bar in androids favor and will ultimately surpass anything apple can do! what good is an a4 chip with crippled os software that is controlled by 1 man?
If you didn't notice, the beginning of the 4th video has been cut by a few seconds. I texted the guy and told him he didn't do a very good job of hiding his phone number.
I'm such a saint!!
Man, what a gorgeous device. Also, that third video is just cruel. Poor iPhone look so shitty next to the EVO. and I own an iPhone 3G.
@pappla
San Antonio Texas has had the 4G network since August of last year but active since September of '09. Only thing is i would have used it pending the fact that i had a phone.... well thankfully now i can get one.
@hated one
I have no idea what the f#ck you're rambling about. You really should go back to the community college that expelled you and persuade them to let you re-enroll in ESL 101.
yea and if only the Iphone could make phone calls or get internet in half the places sprint/verizon works just fine it would be worth consideration
Why in God's name would you use a music video that is mostly in slow motion demonstrate video downloading? We have no idea if the stream was really affected by it. FAIL!
@hated one
LOL, you're a funny guy. This has to be sarcasm. :D
Camera dude went boob hunting at 1:15 in fourth vid :D
@hated one
ENGADGET WILL YOU PLEASE BAN THIS ASSHOLE?
I wasn't really that impressed with 4Mbps on a speed test, I've personally seen that same speed on a HSPA connection (Rogers), so I'd expect a bit faster on a "4G" network.
@windsorsean
Considering I'm only getting 5down 2up here on my desktop, I'm very impressed.
Need to change my pants again...
Pure ownage on the 3rd video by the EVO left Idont in the Dust.
@hated one
Apple fanboys are the new republicans. They lie, shout and muddy the discussion, hoping to sway opinion. Here's the REAL numbers:
$119 - AT&T unlimited text, voice and data (at least here in CA)
$110 - Sprint unlimited everything, PLUS 4G and PLUS wifi hub
Cheaper plan, way more features for the money. End of story.
@hated one . Why don't you get off AT&T's di*k. Your just pissed that your iphone is being blown away and is old and your broke ass can't swing the money for somthing way better. Your name says it all you know how everyone feels about you. Wonder why that is?
Man! Every time I see an article about this phone I want one!! To bad I'm an iPhone whore!
@TheOrioles33
Submit to the green alien!!! :-p
@hated one Sounds like a good deal. Are you running a drug cartel?
