Samsung Moment update to Android 2.1 available at long last?
Sure, it's been leaked already -- but is Moment-gate 2010 finally about to draw to a close? Quite possibly, because folks running the firmware update executable found on Sprint's site are apparently ending up with a phone powered by Android 2.1 when all is said and done. Considering the fact that the Moment runs stock Android, the update feels long overdue -- but Eclair updates are still pretty hard to come by no matter what kind of phone you're using, so we're just delighted to see it finally happen. Moment owners: can you do us a solid and check this out (assuming you're brave enough) and let us know how it goes in comments?

Lets take a moment to celebrate.
@Einlander
Just a moment... I was going to say that.
@Einlander for a moment there I didn't realize what you guys are doing.
@Einlander
This Magic Moment...
@MysticLeviathan: Not a moment too soon.
@Einlander A moment of silence for all those iPhone that died over Android.
@Einlander hackers will save our world. Let's toast for that. Reactions to Moment. http://j.mp/moment-2-by-samsung
@Einlander At the present moment, my phone is stuck at USB install. If this isn't resolved in a few moments, I will be very angry at my Moment.
@kidphat Just in time to be outdated again!
What?...while my Hero weeps in the corner. :|
@One Love Mine will join you.
@Adorialea
and mine..
@One Love
I'm not weeping, I'm actually laughing out loud
@One Love
Mine won't! Yours shouldn't be either! Root root root!
@One Love
I was too timid to root, too, until someone linked me some good stuff. So I'll pass along the favor:
Rooting your phone:

The ROM I'm running (which is nice, similar to the Incredible/Evo):

Pretty generic(-ish) guide for all things you'll need:

(can't find the original one that helped me so much but this one looks simpler anyway)
I've been enjoying my 2.1 now for a few days, and LOVING IT!!! Also, DC2.08 has a built-in updater, too, so you don't have to wait for Sprint or HTC. :)
My hero also weeps in silence....
@Kitten exactly what I did, and exactly what I use. and it is just as stable as stock 2.1... which is much better than what is stock on the hero. props to the damagecontrol rom!!
@One Love
My Tattoo feels your pain... ;(
And now you must wait another 1000 years to get froyo ... tsk tsk
@chosenone1 Thats where iPhone has advantage over Andorid phones. They need to work that kink out. They have to have a way to update all android os phones at the same time instead of waiting for months.
@hero785
WinMo and Palm devices were never updated all at once, and the iPhone can only do it because they're from a single supplier on a single carrier, which greatly reduces the headaches involved (and the single supplier, Apple, has an ungodly amount of cash on hand for software development and testing).
Google is working on this though. They're trying to make it so most Android OS features can be updated through the Market, and that the only responsibility the hardware manufacturers and carriers will have will be stable hardware drivers, and bloating/crippling your phone, respectively.
Still, the "popular" Android devices get pretty timely leaked updates or hacks. It's not optimal compared to official releases, but the Android ecosystem is still evolving and the issue has been acknowledged, I believe it will work itself out in time.
while some people have a serious CDMA lockup issue, i've never seen this and personally really like my moment... ill probably switch to the EVO when it comes out, but its hardware keyboard is pretty nice and especially useful considering the screen is only 3.2" (the 800mhz processor isnt bad either)
They can't release all updates at the same time can they? Big brother G prolly has its own version while the other 18473743432394 carriers have their own juiced up versions.
@ssgadget And make those that might get an update earlier wait? Not sure I see the sense in that.
@cherryboom uh, you can. virtually all android phones have a large hacker base upgrading phones long before carriers do. unlike apple, google doesn't really do anything to stop you and doesn't seem to care as long as modders keep closed source software (e.g. google maps, which people can download separately anyway) out of their custom ROMs
@cherryboom I DID.
Hero running 2.1.
On a whim I clicked update on my sprint hero. I get a better message than no new firmware available now.
"The firmware update could not be completed. Please try again later. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Customer Service Error code: 1012"
@SteveO1683 Sorry to dash your hopes, but that is not an uncommon message to get. My hero has hit me with it a few times in the past. The first time, I too, got excited, but that was 2 weeks ago...
Alas, my hero giggles at me for a moment
My Hero is about commit suicide...
@jroman28
Bro just root. Running 2.1 SlideVillain on my Hero. It's amazing!
@Apple Google Microsoft
stop with all the "just root" comments. im rooted and having major BT issues with my car. these custom roms are far from fully functional.
@flexte
I have a rooted hero and damage control works just fine, plus I have live wallpapers, maybe you should do some research.not all the custom roms are half ass.
@flexte
Yeah I had BT problems with a custom rom, until I switched to one of the half dozen other roms that didn't have that problem. Zero issues on my Fresh rom.
@Stratification Haha. "sense"
A solid?
@cherryboom
You can, idiot.
It's called custom roms.
Google much?
it works!!!!! 2.1 now on my moment!!!
@matt0715
How did you even FIND it? Their support site is a little... special.
@Kitten its on the support page as cl14 but its not cl14
@matt0715 worked for me as well....now the joy of setting up a blank OS
@ssgadget As of right now, it is technically impossible. Different manufacturers implement and layer on top of Android differently, so a simultaneous update would break a lot of devices unless you wait until every manufacturer finishes with their corresponding phone updates, but that would delay releases even more.
Yes it is true. I work at a call center for sprint and we had training today saying the hero and moment will get 2.1 soon. No specific date though. Sorry.
@llBarcode
Connsidering the update instructions that come with the update are dated 5/14/10, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say...
June 30th. This is Sprint we're talking about :-)
@llBarcode
Well, since the update instructions are dated 5/14/10, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the OFFICIAL release date will be...
June 30th. This is Sprint we're talking about. :-)
X10
How long did it take you guys to update? I connected it and all and followed all steps and now the Swupdate says Ready... Do not disconnect and there really dosnt seem to be any movement on my progress...a bit scared here
@ike760 just close the program, and try again, it happens every so often. I've also run into that issue on 64-bit machines, it doesn't really like them, works more often on 32-bit, so if you have 1 available to use I suggest giving it a try.
@ike760
mine did that - I eventually pulled the plug, as I was seeing no progress and no data appeared to have transfered.
I was worried as I pulled the plug. but it came back.
started over, it did it again. I moved to another windows box, and it worked.
2.1 golly. other than google goggles, and the new google maps you can color me unimpressed so far. Not getting more home screens is some BS.
@greencpu Lol try Google voice support its fun lol that and the ability to finally preview market downloads(godsend)... OH AND THX ALL the issue was a missing driver from my laptop as a result of my somewhat questionable upgrade to windows 7 ultimate lol
@greencpu download helix launcher, gives you up to 7 screens.
