Sony just posted its yearly results today, and while a ¥40.8 billion ($439 million) loss is never a good thing, it's at least a marked improvement from
last year's staggering $1 billion drop into the red, which was the company's first loss in 14 years. LCD TVs and cameras were Sony's big electronics sellers, while PS3 sales went up to 13 million from 10.1 million last year -- and hey, Sony's console actually became profitable at the end of the year as production costs have gone down. Now for the bad news: PSP sales were down to 9.9m from 14.4 last year, with game sales dropping to 44.4m from 50.3m units, while PS2 hardware went down to 7.2m from 7.7m units and PS2 software fell sharply from 83.5m units to 35.7m units. That's not completely unexpected, as the PS2 can't last forever and the PSP is getting long in the tooth, but it means that Sony faces some serious pressure to hit its target of 15m PS3s sold this year to pick up the slack and help it hit its goal of posting a ¥50 billion ($541 million) profit next year. Let's hope that Move controller lives up to the hype, right? Sony's also counting on 3D to help it get there, and wonder of wonders, it also expects Sony Ericsson to hit profitability, so that
X10 mini pro had better be a big improvement over the
Xperia X10. We'll see if Sir Howard can keep all these various ships going in the right direction while still keeping the rest of Sony's diverse operations (like its profitable life insurance business) in line -- it should be an interesting year.

too bad the ps3 has no games. (lbg is 2d platformer, move orange jump on skateboard, revolutionary. gow3 is a cinematic, it launched and now noone talks about it because it sucks.)

it still doesnt have games. mag is a COMPLETE joke of a game with no story at all. gow3 is a cinematic with no multiplayer. PSN has noone on it. you get what you pay for. LBP is the lamest excuse of a game, oh wow a 2d platformer easier than mario. didnt think it was possible.

Cheya.. Well I sold my PS3 for an Xbox cuz all my friends were on it, I like it, it's fun. But the Xbox has HORRIBLE games.
PS3 has LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Killzone, LOTS of awesome title.

What exactly are any of you xbox fanboys talking about? If you love your xbox so much go play it, don't even try to hide the fact that ps3 sales are up a lot. Go to a store and see which is sold out. Ps3s are because people look for quality. Not to mention how the games for the ps3 the past year have been pretty epic (hint... uncharted 2...GOTY too, did you know that?) Xbox live may be a bit better, but psn is quickly catching up and soon you'll have nothing to use as an excuse. I can't believe I'm wasting my time trying to convince you, when it's right in front of you.

umm.... why would you buy a ps3 to watch bluray movies when you can buy a player for around a hundred bucks? It would be pretty kickass to use it solely for multimedia, but the vast majority of ps3 users buy it for playing games and like the fact that they might as well use it as their bluray player too. Bluray gives you better games too, due to storage and at least it wont scratch:p

But seriously, think about it - if every PS3 user had to pay $20 per year to play on PSN then sony loss would have fell to $180.
Can't imagine Verizon letting you operate a smartphone without a monthly service charge - same thing - X360 online is much smoother than my PS3 has ever been

Ughh... why do any of you care? I have all 3 and a fairly powerful PC and what I'm looking forward to the most is Mario Galaxy 2. I loved Bayonnetta, Dead Rising, Banjo-Kazooie and Uncharted. I'm tired of FPS's.

From what I've read, the Blu Ray playing capability of the PS3 rivals all but the best standalone Blu Ray players, which is why apparently a lot of people have been buying a PS3 just to watch Blu Ray movies. It's now at a pretty good price for a combination Blu Ray player and game console/media player. I'm definitely considering getting one when I make the leap to Blu Ray.

Are you serious? Sony is one of the biggest supporters of proprietary formats. From DRM to hardware, Sony is there to spoil your fun and wallet. All this with terrible support for most of their products, and a bait and switch strategy that puts inferior components in later generation hardware.

Most of the Sony stuff I have bought (PS3 aside, still going strong) over the last couple of years has died, just out of warranty... the quality is gone.
Its a brand I now avoid.
