Hauppage WinTV gets WiFi streaming for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
If we've learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it's that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so -- and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. Indeed, the software will even stream 16 and Pregnant (or whatever it is you're into these days) to your Mac computer. Sadly, all of this streaming is going down via WiFi, but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away. It will be available directly from Hauppauge for $9.95, although the company is making a free upgrade available to current owners of WinTV-HVRs. PR after the break.
Hauppauge Launches Live TV Support for the iPad and iPhone
'WinTV Extend' also Sends Live TV to the iPod Touch and Apple Mac Computers
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hauppauge Digital, Inc. (Nasdaq:HAUP - News), the world's leading developer and manufacturer of TV tuner products for personal computers, announced today that their WinTV-HVR TV tuner boards for PCs can now stream live TV over the Internet to the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and any Apple Macintosh computer which supports a Safari web browser.
Live TV for these Apple devices is provided by Hauppauge's "WinTV Extend", which will be a feature in Hauppauge's new WinTV v7.2 application. WinTV Extend transmits live TV to Internet and WiFi connected devices such as the Apple iPad, iPhone and others. The WinTV v7.2 application provides live TV and TV recording to PCs equipped with a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR TV tuner.
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR TV tuners bring live TV, both standard definition and HD TV, into Windows based PCs. The new WinTV Extend feature will take the live TV signal and transmit it over the Internet where it can be received by the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, or by a Mac computer, through the Safari web browser.
With a WinTV-HVR TV tuner and WinTV Extend running on a PC at home, a user of a supported Apple device can be anywhere in the world and can have live TV from their home sent over the Internet to their Apple device screen. On the large screen iPad or a Mac computer, the live TV image can be displayed along side the TV tuner channel list from your WinTV-HVR at home. On the iPhone and iPod touch, the user can switch between the display of the TV channel list and live TV.
The WinTV v7.2 application will include WinTV Extend and will be available directly from Hauppauge at a cost of $9.95. Current owners of WinTV-HVR's can upgrade to WinTV v7.2 Details will be available on the Hauppauge website.

"Standing here you can see my Manchester"
@Boyo
nice, I lol'd
The software doesn't seem to be available yet, just WinTV 7 1.3D and not 7.2 yet. I am looking forward to the update though! I have a Hauppage 1250 and am very happy with my purchase, this will definitely sweeten the deal as long as it is a free update for existing users!
@benny90
Just vaporware at this point. Riding high on the iPad hype. 'sounds neat' though.
@Steveorevo This sucks. I can't believe they done this
Why not allow streaming over the net to any internet connected device? ...also add channel guide and record TV scheduling and I would take 3!
I just read the release and its a bit confusing:
"WinTV Extend transmits live TV to Internet and WiFi connected devices such as the Apple iPad, iPhone and others." ...(and others?)
"...With a WinTV-HVR TV tuner and WinTV Extend running on a PC at home." ...so an Apple device user will need a PC to transmit the stream? :)
Looks like its not just for Apple products (from the website) :
WinTV Extend is a built-in Internet video server for the WinTV v7.2 application. WinTV Extend is standard in the WinTV v7.2 application. WinTV Extend will take your live TV signal and send it to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC computer over either a home WiFi connection or over the Internet.
All you need on your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch is a Safari browser pointed to your PC at home. If you are using a Mac or a PC, all you need is a browser (Safari recommended on the Mac) and a Flash video player. :)P
For 3G streaming:
1. Jailbreak iPhone/iPad 3G.
2. Download My3G
3. Enjoy!
@Stevenk

"but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away."
You have no idea how handy this would be for those living in the basements of all kinds... including the ones with the picture of Satoru Iwata on the wall.
@who said what They also have wifi on planes, at airports, in coffee shops, in office buildings, and at McDonalds these days. Not sue what that "5 feet away" nonsense was about.
@SlappySquirrel
Well that confused me too.
Does it work like:
a) Must be connected to same WiFi WLAN in order to stream
/or/
b) (I hope) The iPhone OS app just refuses to work over 3G working on a WiFi hotspot - meaning a tether, MiFi or jailbreak would work.
???
Slingbox is still a better solution since their streaming protocol automatically adjusts for bandwidth \ lag spikes....it's just too bad that their support sucks and they take forever to release updates for newer devices \ os's. They said they are working on an ipad version -- sometime around january I think? I'll expect it in december, if not next year.
@DoctarPeppar : Can i buy a Slingbox for $9.95?
I used to have a WinTV card in every Windows computer I owned and have bought at least five versions over the years. I wish they made a card for the Mac though (now that I won't touch Windows with a ten foot pole).
It's kind of sad given that they actually make the PCIe card, but just don't bother to make the software, (even though they make Mac software for the plastic dongle they also sell). Kind of stupid IMO. Just throwing away business that they could get with minimal effort.
@Gazoobee you know you could always install MythTV, which is 100x better, and supports most of Haupauge's cards
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Myth_on_Mac_OS_X#Pre-built_Downloads
As soon as I figure out how to stream to my Android phone, I'm all set.
@Gazoobee Windows 7 is King.
eyetv for mac works well for me. I have eyetv hybrid USB dongle plugged into my mac at home. I can get any cable channel I have at home on my 3gs iPhone away from home using either wifi or 3g. Just wish I could get it the same way on my new Sony Z. Doesn't work with PC's...
That guy has a huge Manchester.
I'd rather see his Man Chest. Er.
Orb Live already does this.
@aedile Really?
Excited, I saved my old Hauppage card
@aedile Yeah Orb does a good job of this. Orb also incorporates Guide data whereas it looks like this will not. Only advantage I can see is that you have to pay for orb client for iphone/ipod where as presumably since this is browser based there is nothing to pay for with this version.
@aedile Doesn't work with my HD 1250 card.
When will this version be released? I see it listed on the home page but when I click through to download I am redirected to version 1.3D
@danmanca Can someone please confirm this? The article and the Home Page are very misleading. It looks like v7.2 is out, but no download links at the Web Site. So if this is out, where the hell is the download located and if it is not, whats the release date?
@Rodimus80 I agree, the version you can download now is 7.0.28096, and even after asking for updates in the settings panel, nothing new comes..
So if i have a pc in central america i would need to download safari so i can watch tv on my ipod touch in the US? Either way im good with this
@Sil Your iPod touch has Safari built in
@danmanca I meant if we needed safari on the PC
Lonnie Quinn is the best weatherman.. Florida misses you, Lonnie.
Anyone have a download link for the pc app? All I find on their site is v7 1.3d
...you can use it in more than portrait mode, right? The aspect ratio on that is horribly messed up.
That aspect ratio seems..... off.
