Intel promises to bring wireless display technology to other mobile devices
Details are unfortunately light on this one, but Intel has closed out the week with one interesting tidbit of news -- it's apparently planning to bring its wireless display technology (a.k.a. WiDi) to netbooks, tablets and other mobile devices. That word comes straight from Intel wireless display product manager Kerry Forrell, who says that "we fully expect to take the technology there," but that he can't yet provide a specific time frame. Those plans are further backed up by Intel CEO Paul Otellini himself, who told investors this week that "what we'll be doing over the next few years is take the Wi-Di capability that's in the laptop today and extend that into all the Intel platforms." Intel doesn't even seem to be stopping there, however, with Forrell further adding that the company even sees the technology being built into to TVs "over time."

I haven't held my breath on an intel promise since Larrabee.

@furquanatique
oops double post
Please be ubiquitous!
@Luxury Guy I want this to be like bluetooth... everywher
I can see the home theater of the future already... "SURE I have to change batteries every 2 hours, but LOOK, NO CABLES!"
@MrFluffyThing Yea thats what I was thinking. I would rather have all my speakers connected to the amplifier then having the speakers batteries die every few hours.
How do I pronounce Wi-Di? Like Why-Die??
Why-Dih
"wireless display"
eat your Wi-Di's
this was a waste of money. it may be a good idea but the hardware implemented by it makes it the shittiest experience ever. waste of money.
never seen such a crapy device that looks horible on a tv. its cheaper and looks way better just to run a hdmi cable
@Ops
Seriously? Have you even used it? I have it hooked up to my LCD TV and it works great. It came free with my laptop I bought from best buy and I couldn't be happier with how it works. Set up was easy and I have never had any problems with it. It's great for watching hulu, itunes, etc. No messy cables, just push a button on my laptop and it automatically connects to my Wi-di. Please, use it before you make such drastic comments.
worry about your wimax intel....
Since Nokia and Intel are working together ... Pls let the first Meego mobile got WiDi.
Nokia loves TV output, this is the right time to bring something new again on Mobile!!!
I like the idea of watching movies without cables but Intel doesn't seem to be in a hury to be the first to deliver this technology. Else it will have provided a more specific time frame.

So, is dlna a form of widi, or are they different standards?
@marmaduke Different standards. DLNA shares content, and the reciever. In other words, DLNA shares content and the reciever can detect that content and play it using its own GUI. WiDI streams content directly, and the receiver just acts like a pipe... the GUI is exactly what you see on your laptop.
wifi mifi wigi widi peepee
So, Sibeam is dead.
So what are the chances mac's will come with this technology in the near future?
How how long is it going to take for us to see this on a mac?
Unless it works with Linux I don't care. :]
Is this just an addon to the chip? Just wondering if this is something I can add to my just-ordered Inspiron 15 with i7?
