DIYer combines iPhone 3GS with Show WX for pico projected gaming bliss (video)
The Moject project proved that smartphones and pico projectors do indeed have a thing for one another, but Ethan Janson has taken things one step further with an unnamed contraption that holds his iPhone 3GS, a Microvision Show WX and an "ancient" point-and-shoot camera. Put simply, the handmade thingamajig allows him to play his iPhone games on a far larger screen, and since the Show WX is continually in focus regardless of distance from walls, there's never a blurring issue when flailing about in order to control the gameplay. The full skinny is down there in the source, but shortcut takers can head straight past the break for a video.

super cool
@jawman iPhone games on far larger screen = iPad.
@David Bailey wooosh
@jawman My 4 yr old son loves playing this game. He just spins around and shoots everything. Good job on the pico.
Seriously?
NIce
the iphone sucks for proper games. And no I'm not a hater - I have a 3gs but really game machine - it ain't.
@ajwoodhouse
i hate playing games on my ipad but i actually enjoy playing games on my iphone 3gs. I mean i don't LOVE playing games on it but i use it WAY more than my PSP.
Wow, its like virtual reality games but better because its further from your face. This is pretty awesome, if this guy could put together a sleeker model, I'm sure people would buy it.
@Luxury Guy Ahhh, nevermind, I thought the camera was actually needed. Its just there for video recording the output. Essentially, the only thing you need is the pico projector.
@Luxury Guy
LOL I was wondering what the hell the camera was for also.
@Luxury Guy Still, if he makes a a slip in dock for the projector and redirect the output angle of the projector he'd have a nice little product. A niche product since it would cost $300+ dollars for him to manufacture, but I bet he could get a patent and troll someone.
It'll get rejected by Jobs.
That's totally awesome. Imagine if someone made a game controller with a compass and projector built in and you could play pc first person shooters the same way =O
I don't think "continually autofocuses" is an accurate way to describe laser projectors' ability to have infinite focus. There isn't an active mechanical lens or software compensation to focus rather that the laser's ability to fire in a straight line towards the MEMS scanning mirror to literally draw the picture accordingly.
Check out their website on how it works. http://www.microvision.com/pico_projector_displays/howitworks.html
OK, so I don't really want to start a flamewar, but I do have to point this out...if an iPhone could really multi-task, this guy wouldn't need to jerry-rig his old digi-cam on top of his device. He could capture the video of him playing his pico projected game all at the same time. Minus a lot of battery life of course, but still...
@Chaosdivine I doubt that the cpu is powerful enough to capture video and run a game at the same time without alot of lag.
@MajorTom15
Ya, you're right...
Hopefully in a new rendition or by some other phone maker, it will come to fruition.
I think lcd glasses would still be the cheapest route though. Probably the best experience for immersive gaming too. Get on that Edgadget would you? I'd like to see a review on current gen LCD glasses. Have they matured any over previous gen?
@Chaosdivine check vuzix iwear they have really immersive versions but also have one that look like sunglasses
Tight, a laser projector : no focus.... now if they could bump up the power so that it is brighter than 8 to 10 lumens....
In a month that phone will be ancient too.
Nintendo needs to do this with their next system since there is no way Jobs will allow anything this cool on the iphone
I have a migraine now. :(
...that was pointless.
Dude has too much time on his hands.
If your phone requires a pico projector, a digital camera, and 2x4's......
@Madcat "They Blew It"™ ?
I would write something positive about this article, but my PC would spit on me.
Definitely some badass ingame experience^^
For a second, I thought those helicopters were fish. XD
That Show WX is pretty cool, since it projects while moving without loss of focus. It can also run from an Android, since it accepts composite video, and some of the new generation Androids have a USB to composite video output which sends your screen view, including gaming, to that port. That's some portable entertainment.
What is the point of the camera. There have been pico projectors out for a while now that you can use to play games with it on your wall.
That's all he did was hook up a pico projector that works with the iPhone. What's the big deal.
@Happy
Ummm...The camera is to record the video :-) ....
Its because it's using a game ( Sky Siege ) which has a full 360 tracking for any direction or twist - so it tracks your movement wherever you point
Look at the second part of the video - when he points up at the ceiling you see the clouds and sun above you! Awesomeness!
Yeah I think this is pretty awesome no matter how you look at it.
It took me a little bit to work out what was going on, but this is truly genius.
So basically engadget wrote an article about a guy connecting his iPhone to a pico laserprojector?
